Nigeria has recorded a significant decline in solar panel imports, according to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), highlighting a shift in the country’s renewable energy market and policy direction.

Data from the NBS shows that the value of imported solar panels — classified as photovoltaic modules — dropped sharply within a short period, reflecting changing dynamics in Nigeria’s energy sector. The decline comes amid growing government efforts to promote local production and reduce dependence on imported renewable energy components. 

Push for Local Manufacturing Drives Decline

Industry stakeholders attribute the drop to policy signals from the Federal Government aimed at boosting domestic manufacturing capacity. Authorities have increasingly emphasized localisation, with agencies such as the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) playing a central role in developing Nigeria’s solar production ecosystem.

Nigeria has already begun expanding its local solar panel manufacturing capacity, with multiple facilities across the country contributing to a growing renewable energy value chain. This marks a shift from previous years when the country relied heavily on imports to meet rising demand for off-grid electricity solutions. 

Energy Transition and Policy Direction

The development aligns with broader national strategies to reduce foreign exchange pressure, improve energy security, and support the transition to cleaner energy sources. Solar power remains a critical solution to Nigeria’s persistent electricity challenges, especially in rural and underserved communities.

Recent government initiatives, including investments in mini-grids and renewable infrastructure, signal a long-term commitment to scaling solar adoption while strengthening local industry participation. 

Balancing Local Growth and Energy Access

However, analysts warn that while restricting imports may boost local production, Nigeria must carefully manage the transition to avoid supply shortages or rising costs that could slow solar adoption.

With millions of Nigerians still lacking reliable electricity, experts say a balanced approach — combining local manufacturing incentives with sustained access to affordable solar technology — will be key to sustaining growth in the sector.

The Federal Government has handed over 100 two-bedroom energy-efficient homes to widows in Rigachikun, Kaduna State, under the Family Homes Funds Limited (FHFL) Social Housing Programme.

The project, which features urban farming spaces and solar-powered systems, was designed to promote sustainable living and economic empowerment among vulnerable women.

Speaking during the handover, FHFL Chairman Demola Adebise said the initiative represents “renewed hope and restored dignity” for beneficiaries. He noted that the development integrates home ownership with skills training, livelihood support, and climate-smart construction.

The project began when the widows collectively offered their land and sought government partnership to build affordable homes. The collaboration, according to officials, resulted in a model for inclusive housing delivery and empowerment.

Each home was constructed using Expanded Polystyrene System technology, cutting costs and carbon emissions by up to 40 percent. In addition, beneficiaries received livelihood training and cottage yards for food processing and income generation.

Managing Director of FHFL, Abdulmuttalib Mukhtar, described the scheme as proof that effective collaboration between citizens and government can drive measurable social change.

Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Senator Atiku Bagudu, said the project aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, aimed at inclusive growth and tangible development outcomes.

Kaduna State Governor, Senator Uba Sani, commended the initiative as a model of people-centred governance, saying it created over 500 jobs during construction while providing affordable housing for 100 families.

The project was executed in partnership with the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) and the Kaduna State Government.

Engr. Kareem Aduagba revealed during a Kaduna event that the helicopter would soon undertake its highly anticipated maiden flight.

The indigenous helicopter, officially named the “Nigerian Chopper,” represents a significant achievement in Nigeria’s engineering and aviation sectors.

“We are approaching the final stages. The first test flight will happen very soon,” Aduagba confidently stated during discussions.

NASENI engineers utilized imported aircraft components, both in SKD and CKD forms, which were assembled and modified locally.

NASENI Strengthens Focus on Local Innovation and Industrial Advancement

The engagement event gathered government officials, industry leaders, manufacturers, and academics to discuss driving Nigeria’s technological advancement.

Engr. Abdulfatai Ambali emphasized NASENI’s renewed commitment to commercialization, collaboration, and innovation under its current leadership.

“We’re prioritizing awareness and stakeholder engagement, ensuring homegrown technologies reduce dependence on foreign engineering products,” Ambali explained.

Stakeholders Call for Greater Support of Nigeria’s Local Industries

Saleh Kwaru, the event facilitator, urged Nigerians to support homegrown industries to foster sustainable national economic growth.

“Reliance on foreign products weakens the economy. We must leverage local resources for sustainable industrial progress,” Kwaru stressed.

Yusuf Suleman from SMEDAN praised NASENI’s efforts, highlighting innovation’s role in solving production challenges and creating jobs.

“Modern technology enhances product acceptance. NASENI’s initiatives will strengthen marketing, technological growth, and sustainable industrial development,” Suleman concluded.

The Nigerian Chopper maiden flight is expected to boost confidence in Nigeria’s aerospace ambitions and engineering capabilities.
