The Nigerian naira maintained relative stability at the official market but weakened in the parallel segment on Friday, highlighting ongoing pressure in the foreign exchange market.

At the Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market (NFEM), the naira opened trading at an official rate of N1,340.88 to the dollar, reflecting a more stable trend compared to earlier volatility recorded in the month.

Analysts attribute the relative calm in the official window to recent interventions by the Central Bank of Nigeria, including liquidity injections aimed at easing dollar demand and stabilising the market.

However, the situation in the parallel market painted a different picture, as traders in major cities like Lagos and Abuja quoted the dollar at around N1,250, indicating sustained demand for foreign exchange outside the official window.

The disparity between the official and parallel market rates, though narrower than in previous months, continues to reflect structural challenges within Nigeria’s foreign exchange system.

Market watchers say the gradual convergence of rates is a result of ongoing monetary reforms and improved transparency in price discovery at the NFEM.

Financial experts also link the naira’s recent stability to improved crude oil production and increased foreign exchange inflows, which have helped ease pressure on the local currency.

Despite this, concerns remain over external factors, including global inflation trends and interest rate movements in the United States, which could influence currency flows and impact the naira’s performance in the coming weeks.

For businesses and individuals, the parallel market remains a critical source of foreign exchange, particularly for those seeking immediate access to dollars.

Bureau De Change operators note that while liquidity conditions have improved slightly, demand for the dollar remains strong as economic activities pick up in the second quarter of the year.

Economic analysts warn that sustained stability in the foreign exchange market will depend on consistent policy implementation, improved dollar supply, and broader macroeconomic reforms.

The latest exchange rate movement underscores the delicate balance the Nigerian economy must maintain as it navigates both domestic pressures and global financial dynamics.

The British Pound recorded a marginal decline against the Nigerian Naira in early trading on Friday, February 27, 2026, as improved foreign exchange liquidity and rising external reserves supported the local currency.

Data from the Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market (NFEM) indicates that the Naira maintained relative stability at the official window, while the gap between official and parallel market rates remained narrow.

Official Market Performance

At the official window, the Naira opened at approximately ₦1,828.32 per Pound. During early trading hours, the exchange rate appreciated slightly, with the Pound easing to ₦1,826.63 by 6:00 a.m. WAT.

This movement follows a volatile midweek session in which the Naira had briefly weakened to ₦1,834.96 per Pound before regaining ground.

Market analysts attribute the relative calm to strategic interventions by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), which has continued to manage liquidity in both dollar and sterling segments of the market.

The apex bank recently reduced its benchmark interest rate by 50 basis points to 26.50 per cent, signalling the beginning of a cautious, data-dependent monetary easing cycle. The move followed a moderation in inflation to 15.10 per cent in January 2026, strengthening confidence in macroeconomic stability.

Parallel Market Trends

In the parallel market, commonly referred to as the black market, the Pound Sterling traded within a range of ₦1,840 to ₦1,855 per Pound on Friday morning.

Although the informal sector continues to cater to retail demand for travel allowances, school fees and personal remittances, traders in Lagos and Abuja reported reduced speculative demand compared to previous years.

The relatively tight spread between the official and parallel market rates reflects improved foreign exchange supply conditions and renewed participation of Bureau De Change (BDC) operators in the formal distribution framework.

Currency dealers noted that demand for Pounds remains steady due to ongoing tuition payments to the United Kingdom and settlement of international service contracts. However, the panic-driven purchases that previously widened exchange rate gaps have largely subsided.

Key Factors Supporting the Naira

Several macroeconomic developments are shaping the Pound to Naira trajectory this week.

1. Rising External Reserves

Nigeria’s external reserves have climbed to $50.45 billion, marking a 13-year high. The strong reserve position has boosted investor confidence in the CBN’s capacity to defend the Naira against external shocks and speculative pressures.

Higher reserves provide the central bank with a larger buffer to intervene in the foreign exchange market when necessary, helping to smooth volatility.

2. Monetary Policy Adjustment

The recent rate cut by the Central Bank of Nigeria reflects a gradual shift toward supporting economic growth as inflation shows signs of easing.

While lower interest rates can sometimes weaken a currency by reducing yield attractiveness, analysts say the impact has been offset by improved dollar inflows and better reserve management.

3. Improved Oil Production and FX Supply

Nigeria’s domestic oil production has shown signs of improvement in recent months, contributing to stronger export earnings. Reduced reliance on foreign refined petroleum imports has also lowered pressure on foreign exchange demand.

These developments have helped stabilise the Naira despite broader global currency fluctuations.

Global Influences

On the global stage, the British Pound remains supported by steady economic data from the United Kingdom, including resilient consumer demand and stable labour market conditions.

However, gains against the Naira have been limited by Nigeria’s strengthening domestic fundamentals and proactive foreign exchange management.

Currency analysts note that the GBP/NGN pair remains sensitive to global risk sentiment, particularly movements in the U.S. dollar and shifts in commodity prices.

Short-Term Outlook

As the trading week draws to a close, market observers expect the Pound to Naira exchange rate to fluctuate within the ₦1,820 to ₦1,835 range in the official market, barring unexpected external shocks.

In the parallel market, rates are likely to remain slightly elevated but relatively aligned with official pricing, provided liquidity conditions remain stable.

Overall, the narrowing gap between official and informal rates signals improved market confidence and reduced speculative pressures.

For businesses, importers and individuals with Pound-denominated obligations, the current environment suggests short-term stability, although traders continue to monitor global developments and domestic policy signals closely.

The coming weeks will determine whether sustained reserve growth and disciplined monetary management can anchor the Naira further — or whether renewed global volatility could test the central bank’s resolve.

Data from the Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market (NFEM) show that the Naira opened at ₦1,344.74 per dollar, touched an intraday high of ₦1,345.58, and hovered around ₦1,345.40 by mid-day. The previous day’s closing rate stood at ₦1,346.00.

Market watchers attribute the relative stability to interventions by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), which continues efforts to harmonise exchange rates across different segments.

Improved Liquidity in Official Window

The narrowing spread in the official market is linked to stronger liquidity inflows from international counterparties and a recent policy shift allowing Bureau De Change (BDC) operators access to up to $150,000 weekly through authorised dealer banks.

The move has helped reduce retail demand pressure that often pushes official rates higher.

Parallel Market Trades at Premium

In the parallel market, the Dollar traded between ₦1,360 and ₦1,365, depending on location and transaction size.

Although the informal market still commands a premium, the gap between official and parallel rates has narrowed significantly to about ₦15–₦20, compared to wider spreads recorded in previous years.

Analysts say consistent supply in the NFEM has prevented the sharp spikes typically associated with foreign exchange shortages.

Key Drivers Supporting the Naira

Several macroeconomic factors are providing short-term support for the local currency:

In the parallel market, the naira rose to N1,455 per dollar from N1,465 recorded on Monday, reflecting a N10 gain within 24 hours.

Similarly, the local currency strengthened in the NFEM, where it appreciated to N1,367 per dollar. CBN data showed that the indicative exchange rate improved from N1,384.5 per dollar on Monday to N1,367 per dollar, representing a N17.5 appreciation.

Despite the gains recorded across both markets, the margin between the parallel market rate and the official exchange rate widened. The gap increased to N88 per dollar on Tuesday from N80.5 per dollar the previous day, highlighting continued disparities in foreign exchange pricing.

Market analysts attribute the naira’s recent appreciation to sustained foreign exchange reforms, improved liquidity at the official window, and ongoing interventions by monetary authorities aimed at stabilising the currency.

However, they caution that volatility may persist in the short term due to pressure from import demand, speculative activities, and broader macroeconomic challenges.

The Central Bank of Nigeria has maintained that its ongoing reforms in the foreign exchange market are designed to promote transparency, enhance price discovery, and restore confidence among investors and market participants.

The Nigerian Naira maintained a steady performance against the United States Dollar on Friday, January 16, 2026, across both the official Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market (NFEM) and the parallel (black) market. The stability is attributed to proactive Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) interventions and improved banking liquidity.

Official Market Performance

Data from the NFEM shows the official exchange rate opening at ₦1,422.75 per USD, a slight appreciation from Thursday’s close of ₦1,424.57. During morning trading, the Naira fluctuated in a narrow band, with a high of ₦1,424.32 and a low of ₦1,421.05. Analysts suggest that this period of consolidation follows volatility in late 2025 and reflects effective CBN monetary policies.

Parallel Market Trends

In the parallel market, the Naira is trading between ₦1,465 and ₦1,475 per USD. The gap between official and parallel rates, known as the arbitrage gap, has narrowed compared to previous years. Bureau de Change operators in Lagos and Abuja report moderate dollar demand, as many businesses now access foreign exchange through official channels.

Economic Outlook

The stability of the Naira comes amid cooling inflation and a steady rise in Nigeria’s foreign exchange reserves, providing the CBN with buffers to defend the currency. However, market watchers remain cautious, keeping an eye on global oil price fluctuations and upcoming sovereign debt obligations, which could impact the Naira’s trajectory in the coming weeks.

Key Highlights

Official Rate: ₦1,422.75/USD

Parallel Market Rate: ₦1,465–₦1,475/USD

Supporting Factors: CBN interventions, improved banking liquidity, cooling inflation, rising FX reserves

Risks: Global oil price volatility, upcoming sovereign debt obligations
