A tenant residing in Ilupeju, Lagos, has petitioned the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, over what he describes as an unlawful attempt to forcibly remove him from his residence by a property buyer allegedly acting in concert with law enforcement officers.

Vincent Uba, the tenant, made the appeal through his legal representative, Ogedi Ogu, requesting an immediate investigation into the alleged intimidation, harassment, and disruption of residence at 5, Association Avenue, Ilupeju.

According to the petition, events escalated on May 28, 2025, when an individual claiming ownership of the building reportedly entered the premises without prior notice, damaged the property’s gates, and blocked all access points by offloading truckloads of sand, effectively trapping residents inside and outside the compound.

The lawyer alleged that efforts to reach the purported new owner during the standoff were unsuccessful. He also claimed that police officers were involved in the operation, acting on a petition reportedly submitted by the Oyo State Ministry of Justice and the said buyer, demanding vacant possession of the property.

Ogu said two tenants were taken in for questioning by the police and were only released after posting bail. “They were treated like criminals,” he added, noting the psychological toll the incident had on his client, who also runs a business on the premises.

He further reported that upon Uba’s return from the police station, he found the gates forcibly broken and heaps of sand dumped at the building’s entrances, worsening the disruption.

In a related development, Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke of the Federal High Court has issued an order directing all parties involved in the dispute to maintain the status quo. The interim ruling came in response to a suit filed by Uba, who is seeking to enforce his fundamental human rights and restrain further interference until the court has heard and determined the substantive application.

In a decisive move to strengthen the fight against drug trafficking and abuse, key security and community stakeholders in Edo State have pledged deeper collaboration to dismantle drug networks and curb addiction rates.

The initiative was unveiled during a strategic engagement between the Edo State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and the State Police Command in Benin City. Commander of the NDLEA in Edo, Mitchell Ofoyeju, led the delegation in a courtesy visit to Commissioner of Police, CP Monday Ogbonika, at the police headquarters.

The meeting brought together several prominent stakeholders, including Hon. Ogheneovo Andrew, Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Drug Policy, and Rev. Fr. Dr. Fidelis Arhedo, Executive Director of the Uromi Justice Development and Peace Commission. Their goal: to chart a unified response to the growing threat of drug trafficking and related crimes in the state.

Commander Ofoyeju highlighted the importance of inter-agency cooperation and community engagement in confronting the drug crisis. “Combatting illicit drugs is not the responsibility of one agency alone. It requires shared intelligence, coordinated enforcement, and sustained public awareness,” he stated.

He also reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to dismantling drug cartels while promoting grassroots education through the national War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) campaign spearheaded by NDLEA Chairman, Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (rtd).

Commissioner Ogbonika welcomed the collaboration, noting that joint efforts with the NDLEA and community leaders would enhance crime prevention strategies. “We must form a resilient stakeholder forum tasked with implementing practical measures to eliminate drugs and criminal activity in our communities,” he said.

Reinforcing the state government’s stance, Hon. Ogheneovo said Governor Monday Okpebholo is fully behind the anti-drug efforts and willing to support policy and operational initiatives that protect young people from the dangers of substance abuse.

“We must act swiftly and decisively to rid our streets of illicit drugs. The administration is prepared to back all serious interventions,” he assured.

Community leader and advocate, Rev. Fr. Arhedo, stressed the role of public participation in achieving lasting impact. He called for awareness drives in schools, religious centres, and neighborhoods to educate vulnerable populations and prevent addiction.

As a symbolic gesture, both CP Ogbonika and Hon. Ogheneovo were decorated as official WADA Partners by the NDLEA Commander. They also received recent editions of NDLEA Today, a publication that highlights the agency’s national efforts.

Observers say the outcome of this meeting marks a significant step toward building a united front against drug trafficking and reinforcing public safety initiatives in Edo State.

The Nigeria Police Force has announced the provision of N2 million each to 347 families residing in the Falomo Police Barracks to assist with their temporary relocation due to the planned redevelopment of the barracks in Lagos State, ensuring they have adequate support during this transition.

This is according to a statement signed by ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Force’s Public Relations Officer, which mentions that this initiative is part of a comprehensive plan to upgrade police barracks in collaboration with sub-national governments and developers.

The statement further clarified that the redeveloped barracks will feature modern facilities and infrastructure, with the residents set to return to newly upgraded accommodations upon project completion.

“The redevelopment of the barracks (including Falomo Barracks) is set to be speedily completed after which the occupants will be duly offered fresh accommodation in the redeveloped sites.

“In specific terms, the occupants of Falomo Barracks Blocks A and B have each received a sum of Two Million Naira (N2,000,000) only as a temporary relocation allowance.

“This payment has been made to 347 families after a validation process to facilitate their temporary relocation,” the statement read in part.

The statement also highlighted that the redevelopment initiative extends beyond Falomo Barracks. Similar projects will be gradually rolled out across all police barracks nationwide.

More insights

Furthermore, the statement unequivocally refuted recent rumours circulating that the Nigeria Police Force has sold the Falomo Barracks land, asserting that these claims are false, mischievous, and a calculated attempt to sow discord within the force.

The Police emphasized that spreading such misinformation can significantly harm morale and unity within their ranks.

“The claims that the Barracks are being vacated and the pieces of land sold are false, mischievous, and a calculated attempt to cause unnecessary discord within the ranks of the NPF. The improvement of these facilities is a priority for the Nigeria Police Force, and steps are being taken to address the issues effectively,” the statement read in part.

The statement stressed that redevelopment of police barracks is part of a larger vision to enhance living conditions for police officers and their families.

This initiative aims to ensure that officers have access to modern and well-equipped housing, thereby boosting their morale and operational efficiency.
