According to the presidency, Tinubu will be hosted by and at , marking the first state visit by a Nigerian leader to the UK in 37 years.

The visit is aimed at strengthening bilateral relations and deepening collaboration between both countries.

Key agreements and engagements

During the trip, Tinubu is expected to meet with UK Prime Minister at , where several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) will be signed.

Key sectors targeted include trade, investment, defence, and cultural exchange.

Major financing deal for ports

The President will also witness the signing of a £746 million financing agreement involving the Nigerian Ports Authority and UK Export Finance.

The deal is expected to support the rehabilitation of major infrastructure, including the and .

Cultural diplomacy and business ties

Beyond official meetings, Tinubu will attend a Nigerian Modernism exhibition showcasing the country’s arts and culture, as well as engage with business leaders and members of the Nigerian diaspora in the UK.

A state banquet will also be hosted in honour of the President and his delegation.

The President will be accompanied by top government officials, including Senate President and several ministers overseeing key sectors of the economy and national security.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the posting of four ambassador-designates to key diplomatic missions in the United States, United Kingdom, France, and Turkey, marking the first batch of foreign postings following Senate confirmation of nominees last year.

A statement issued on Thursday by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Mr Bayo Onanuga, confirmed the development.

According to the statement, Ambassador Ayodele Oke has been cleared as Nigeria’s ambassador-designate to France, while Colonel Lateef Are has been approved for posting to the United States of America.

Also approved is Ambassador Aminu Dalhatu, a former Nigerian envoy to South Korea, who has been designated as the High Commissioner to the United Kingdom.

In addition, former Kebbi State governor, Usman Isa Dakingari Suleiman, has been named ambassador-designate to Turkey, where President Tinubu is expected to embark on a state visit next week.

The President has directed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to immediately notify the host countries of the approved postings in line with established diplomatic protocols.

Recall that President Tinubu transmitted an initial list of ambassadorial nominees to the Senate in November 2025, following nearly two years of vacancies across Nigeria’s foreign missions. A supplementary list of 32 nominees was later forwarded.

In December, the Senate confirmed 64 nominees, bringing the total number of confirmed ambassador-designates to 67.

Apart from the four recently approved postings, other confirmed nominees include former presidential aide Reno Omokri, ex-INEC Chairman Mahmood Yakubu, former Aviation Minister Femi Fani-Kayode, and former Oyo State First Lady, Fatima Florence Ajimobi, among others.

The gradual deployment of the ambassadors is expected to strengthen Nigeria’s diplomatic presence and international engagements under the Tinubu administration.

The United States embassy and consulate in Nigeria have resumed full operations following the end of the U.S. government shutdown.

The shutdown, which began on October 1, forced American embassies and consulates worldwide including those in Nigeria to scale down activities and suspend routine public communications. Only urgent safety and security updates were issued during the period.

After 43 days, U.S. President Donald Trump signed a spending bill on Wednesday, reopening the government in what became the longest shutdown in American history.

In a statement on Friday, the U.S. embassy in Nigeria informed visa applicants and other service users that full services had now resumed.

“American citizen services and visa services are proceeding as scheduled,” the embassy announced.

Trump signed the temporary budget after the House of Representatives approved it in a 222–209 vote, two days after the Senate narrowly passed the same funding package.

However, the short-term spending bill only funds the government until January 30, raising the possibility of another shutdown if U.S. lawmakers fail to reach a bipartisan agreement.
