Several residents have reportedly been killed after suspected militia members attacked communities in Jwak Maitumbi, Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The attack took place in the early hours of Sunday and caused extensive damage to homes and farmland. About 45 residential buildings were reportedly destroyed, while attackers also looted valuables and damaged crops.

The incident was reported at about 7:45am, according to counter-insurgency publication Zagazola Makama. Security personnel were later deployed to the affected community.

Residents flee after attack

A military security source told the publication that troops found about 45 houses destroyed when they arrived at the scene.

The attackers reportedly took valuables from residents before leaving the area. Several people were also said to have suffered gunshot wounds, while some victims were reportedly killed during the assault.

The violence forced many residents to leave their homes. Women, children and elderly people reportedly fled the community as they searched for safer locations.

The attack also affected agricultural activities in the area. According to reports, the assailants entered farms belonging to Fulani residents and allegedly destroyed large quantities of crops with cutlasses.

The destruction of homes and farmland has added to concerns about the wider impact of insecurity on rural communities. Beyond the immediate loss of lives, attacks of this nature can leave displaced families without shelter, food supplies or access to their sources of income.

Military moves to prevent reprisal

Following the attack, troops reportedly summoned the Galadima and youth leader of Jwak Maitumbi.

Residents of Kungaboku and Paze communities in the have begun fleeing their homes after suspected bandits issued threats of coordinated attacks on the settlements.

The affected communities, located in on the outskirts of , reportedly received a letter warning that the attackers would launch reprisals following the killing of one of their commanders during a recent security operation.

According to reports, the threat letter was discovered inside a pupil’s school bag at a private school in Paze. A teacher reportedly found the message while marking the child’s homework and immediately alerted the school authorities.

Following the discovery, the pupil, parents, teacher and school authorities were invited by the police for questioning before they were later released.

Threat linked to recent rescue operation

The threat is believed to be connected to a recent rescue operation carried out by troops of the in collaboration with police officers and local vigilantes.

During the operation on March 7, troops from the of the Guards Brigade rescued 19 kidnapped victims during a coordinated search around Gidan Dogo in Bwari Area Council.

The victims, mostly residents of Kungaboku and Paze, were freed during the mission. Security operatives reportedly killed one bandit during the operation while others fled the area with suspected gunshot wounds.

Security forces also recovered an AK-47 rifle and a locally fabricated firearm during the raid.

Fresh kidnapping fuels panic

Tension in the communities intensified after suspected bandits attacked a Fulani settlement in Kungaboku a day before the threat letter surfaced.

During the attack, three women were reportedly abducted and the kidnappers demanded a ransom of N70 million.

Residents say the communities have suffered repeated attacks in recent months, with gunmen targeting homes, farms and nearby settlements.

In one of the previous incidents in October 2025, veterinary doctor was abducted alongside his children in Kungaboku. He was later shot dead in an open field while the children were taken away.

Earlier this month, suspected bandits also abducted a retired military officer, , along with three children during another raid in the area.

Security agencies move to calm residents

To address the growing tension, the divisional police officer in Byazhin convened a security meeting with residents at the palace of Kungaboku’s community head, Chief .

During the meeting, police confirmed awareness of the threat letter but assured residents that proactive security measures were being implemented to prevent any attack.

Residents were urged to remain vigilant and monitor the activities of commercial motorcyclists and scavengers who may act as informants for criminal groups.

Community members were also advised to properly profile new residents moving into the area to ensure they are not linked to criminal networks.

Police further promised to intensify day and night patrols across the affected communities while discussions continue over the construction of a new police post in Kungaboku.

Despite the assurances, fear remains high in the communities, with some homes already deserted as residents await stronger security action to prevent another attack.

The Kwara State Government has ordered the immediate closure of schools across four local government areas following rising security concerns in affected communities.

The directive, issued by the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Kwara State chapter, was communicated in an official circular released on Wednesday.

The circular, signed by NUT Chairman Yusuf Agboola, stated that schools in Isin, Irepodun, Ifelodun, and Ekiti Local Government Areas must remain closed until further notice.

The closure comes in the wake of a deadly attack on a church in Eruku, Ekiti LGA, on Tuesday night.

The Federal Government has blamed a fresh wave of kidnappings and violent attacks across Nigeria on recent statements issued by the United States, warning that the international commentary has emboldened criminal networks already destabilizing several communities.

Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, delivered the warning on Wednesday following two major attacks—the abduction of schoolgirls in Kebbi State and the deadly assault on worshippers in Eruku, Kwara State—which have triggered widespread public outrage.

Akume said President Donald Trump’s posts accusing Nigeria of “Christian genocide” and threatening potential military action had created what he described as a dangerous narrative now being exploited by violent groups seeking visibility.

“Recent pronouncements from the United States have inadvertently emboldened opportunistic violent groups seeking to exploit international narratives and make bold statements by attacking soft targets,” the SGF said.

According to him, before the controversial statements went viral, terrorist and insurgent structures had been significantly degraded, with most activities reduced to scattered banditry. He insisted that the renewed aggression seen over the past week suggests that extremist networks were attempting to leverage global narratives to justify attacks.

Akume stressed that Nigeria does not require foreign troops—a direct response to Trump’s threat to deploy US forces—but instead needs enhanced collaboration with international partners in intelligence, technology, and advanced military equipment.

“The Nigerian Armed Forces are highly capable, experienced and professional. They have reclaimed vast territories and weakened Boko Haram and ISWAP. What Nigeria needs is targeted support, not foreign military deployment,” he added.

Addressing Trump’s assertion of a “Christian genocide,” the SGF firmly rejected the claim, insisting that available intelligence shows extremist groups have attacked both churches and mosques, killing victims of different faiths.

“Nigeria is a secular state. Verified evidence shows these criminal groups attack Muslims and Christians alike,” he said, noting that government appointments also reflect the nation’s religious and ethnic diversity.

He cautioned against narratives that oversimplify the crisis, arguing that such portrayals risk fueling division and providing ideological cover for criminal elements.

The recent attacks in Kebbi and Kwara—two of the deadliest in weeks—have amplified security concerns across the country. In Kebbi, bandits stormed the Government Girls Comprehensive Senior Secondary School in Maga, killing the Vice Principal, Hassan Makuku, and abducting at least 24 students.

Makuku reportedly died while attempting to protect students during the assault.

In Kwara State, gunmen attacked worshippers at Christ Apostolic Church in Eruku, killing at least two people and injuring others before abducting an unspecified number of residents. A second attack along the Ilorin–Kabba Road forced travellers to flee into nearby bushes.

The SGF stated that while the government continues to strengthen security operations, international partners—especially the United States—must avoid statements capable of escalating tension or emboldening insurgents.

The cleric cited incidents such as the killing of Deborah Samuel, the abduction of Leah Sharibu and the Chibok girls, and multiple assaults in Benue, Taraba, Southern Kaduna, Owo, Niger, and Plateau States as evidence of widespread violence targeting Christians.

He explained that the perpetrators were radical groups such as Boko Haram and ISWAP, not the Muslim community, adding that their violent campaigns had cost hundreds of innocent lives, including pastors and worshippers.

Oke commended President Trump for his outspokenness on the issue, recalling that he previously listed Nigeria among countries of concern over religious persecution. However, he stressed that diplomatic cooperation — not confrontation — remained the best path forward.

“President Tinubu should ask for the cooperation of President Trump instead of opposing him. The President should root out radical groups like Boko Haram and ISWAP. Work together so Nigerians can live in peace,” he said.

Armed men suspected to be kidnappers on Friday night launched a deadly ambush on operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Okpella, Etsako East Local Government Area of Edo State, killing eight officers and abducting a Chinese expatriate.

The attack, which occurred at about 10 p.m. near the BUA Cement Factory, also left four officers seriously injured. Security sources confirmed that four other expatriates were rescued during the assault.

According to CSC Afolabi Babawale, the NSCDC’s National Public Relations Officer, the gunmen targeted a convoy of operatives assigned to protect expatriates at the cement plant.

“The convoy of NSCDC personnel and expatriates was ambushed in a three-hour gun battle, leaving eight personnel dead, four injured, one expatriate missing, and four others rescued,” Babawale said in a statement on Saturday.

The Commandant-General of NSCDC, Prof. Ahmed Abubakar Audi, described the fallen officers as patriots who paid the ultimate price in service to the nation. He ordered that they be buried with full honours.

“Their labour, commitment, and patriotism will forever be remembered. This tragic incident will not deter the Corps from fulfilling its mandate of safeguarding critical national assets,” Audi said.

He also disclosed that joint operations involving security agencies have begun in surrounding forests to rescue the abducted expatriate and apprehend the attackers.

The Edo State NSCDC Commandant, Agun Gbenga, has visited the scene of the attack and the hospital where the wounded operatives are receiving treatment. Security reinforcements have since been deployed to the area.

The killings came just hours after a separate abduction incident on the Benin-Auchi Road, where 16 passengers were kidnapped and taken into the forest. Edo Police spokesperson Moses Yamu confirmed that all victims have since been rescued through a joint operation involving police, vigilantes, and local hunters.
