Residents of Ikangba, Agoro, Imodi and Imosan communities in Odogbolu Local Government Area of Ogun State have renewed their protest over alleged land grabbing.

The residents marched through their communities on Friday. It was their second protest in less than a month.

They carried placards and called for urgent action from the Ogun State Government and security agencies. Some of the placards urged Governor Dapo Abiodun and President Bola Tinubu to protect their ancestral lands.

The residents accused alleged land grabbers of bringing bulldozers into the communities. They said the machines destroyed buildings, farmlands and other properties.

They also accused the alleged land grabbers of intimidating residents who challenged their activities.

The communities further claimed that some of the individuals operated with security escorts. They called on the authorities to investigate the allegation.

Communities Reject Link to Traditional Ruler

The dispute has also sparked controversy over the role of the Dagburewe of Idowa, Oba Sikiru Okuribido.

The communities rejected reports linking the traditional ruler to the alleged land-grabbing activities. They described the reports as false.

According to the residents, Oba Okuribido comes from one of the affected communities. They said he had supported their efforts to resist the alleged land grabbers.

The communities also questioned the identities of people who claimed to represent Ikangba in a recent online publication. They said the individuals were not recognised as established indigenes or long-term residents.

Residents Seek Investigation

The residents said the dispute had continued despite an earlier intervention by the Ogun State Commissioner for Justice and Attorney-General, Oluwasina Ogungbade, SAN.

They want the government to carry out an impartial investigation. They also want officials to establish the ownership history and legal status of the disputed land.

The communities called on the Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services and Ogun State Anti-Land Grabbing Task Force to investigate all parties.

They want authorities to examine land documents, court judgments, boundaries and other evidence connected to the dispute.

Professor Ayodeji Gafar spoke at a press briefing after Friday’s protest. He said the communities considered the report linking Oba Okuribido to the dispute unfair.

The Baale of Ikangba, Chief Joseph Adebanjo, also condemned the alleged activities.

Chief Adeniyi Oduneye, the Alase Yemule of Ikangba, joined the call for government action.

Alhaji Surajudeen Raji represented the Baale of Agoro. Chief Olusesi Isiaka represented the Baale of Imodi.

The community leaders appealed to Governor Dapo Abiodun, President Bola Tinubu, the police and DSS to investigate the dispute.

They warned that continued tension could threaten peace in the affected communities.

Prince Yussuf Olanrewaju Olarinde of the Olarinde Royal Family in New Oguntedo Village, Satellite Town, Lagos, has petitioned the Inspector-General of Police over a long-running land dispute.

Olarinde alleged threats to his life, land grabbing and abuse of police powers in the community.

Prince Alleges Police Complicity

In his petition, Olarinde accused some officers of the Lagos State Police Command of failing to act fairly in the dispute.

He alleged that some officers supported people involved in attempts to take control of properties linked to the Olarinde Royal Family.

The prince said the dispute goes beyond a civil disagreement. He alleged violent invasions, attempted killings, demolitions, property destruction and intimidation.

Olarinde described the situation as an attempt to dispossess the royal family of its ancestral properties.

History of the Oguntedo Land Dispute

According to Olarinde, the Federal Military Government created and allocated New Oguntedo Village to the Olarinde Royal Family around 1978.

He said the allocation followed government acquisition and resettlement exercises at the time.

Olarinde also referred to a judgment of the High Court of Lagos State in Suit No. ID/94/88. The court delivered the judgment on July 14, 1989.

Gunmen on Monday night attacked the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, in Plateau State, killing two soldiers and a police officer deployed to protect the institution’s staff quarters.

The victims were reportedly on duty when the attackers struck the residential area of the institute.

Confirming the incident in a statement on Tuesday, the Head of Public Affairs of NIPSS, Dr. Osime Samuel, said a security breach occurred in the vicinity of the institute but assured that the situation had been brought under control.

“The National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, Kuru, wishes to inform the public that a security incident occurred in the vicinity of the Institute in the early hours of today,” he said.

According to Samuel, the swift intervention of security personnel prevented further escalation, adding that there was no immediate threat to participants, staff, residents, or facilities of the institute.

“There is currently no threat to the safety of participants, staff, residents, or facilities of the Institute. Normal activities are continuing as scheduled,” he stated.

Sources, however, disclosed that the attackers allegedly targeted the residences of the Acting Director of Studies, Barrister Nima Salman-Mann, and a Directing Staff member, Professor Haruna Dabin.

The sources revealed that both officials had reportedly received handwritten threat notes pasted on their doors on Saturday, demanding payments of $100,000 and N15 million respectively. The matter was said to have been reported to the institute’s management.

A source familiar with the incident said the soldiers and police officer lost their lives during an exchange of gunfire with the attackers.

“During the day, local security personnel monitor the staff quarters, while soldiers and police officers provide security at night. It is believed the attackers came for the officials they had earlier threatened,” the source said.

NIPSS management said security agencies have commenced investigations to determine the circumstances surrounding the attack and identify those responsible.

The institute urged members of the public and the media to rely on official communications while investigations continue.

“NIPSS is working closely with the appropriate authorities and will provide verified information as soon as it becomes available. We urge members of the public and the media to rely on official communications from the Institute and relevant security agencies,” Samuel added.

The management reaffirmed its commitment to the safety and security of staff, participants, and residents, while commending the professionalism of security personnel involved in responding to the incident.

The bodies of the slain security operatives have reportedly been deposited in a mortuary as investigations continue.

President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday appointed Tunji Disu as Acting Inspector-General of Police (IGP), following the resignation of Kayode Egbetokun.

Mr Disu’s appointment comes just 48 days before he would have reached the mandatory retirement age of 60.

Appointment Close to Retirement

Born on 13 April 1966, Mr Disu enlisted in the Nigeria Police Force on 18 May 1992.

Under existing police regulations, officers must retire upon reaching 60 years of age or completing 35 years of service, whichever comes first. Without the new appointment, Mr Disu would have retired in April 2026 upon attaining the age limit.

Although he will only complete 35 years in service in May 2027, his elevation to the position of IGP entitles him to a statutory four-year tenure, unless he resigns or is removed by the president.

Similar Precedent Under Egbetokun

A similar situation occurred under Mr Egbetokun, who was appointed the 22nd IGP on 19 June 2023. Mr Disu is a career police officer with over three decades of operational and leadership experience.

Born on Lagos Island, he holds:

• Commander of the Lagos State Rapid Response Squad (RRS) between 2015 and 2021

• Commissioner of Police in Rivers State and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja

• Assistant Inspector-General in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex, Alagbon, Lagos

In 2005, he led Nigeria’s first police contingent to the African Union Mission in Sudan (AMIS), serving as Acting Chief of Staff in Darfur.

Before his latest appointment, he was attached to the Special Protection Unit (SPU) at Force Headquarters, Abuja, before being posted to Lagos earlier this month.

The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has begun a special operation aimed at tackling crime across Abuja and its surrounding areas.

According to a statement from the Command, the operation will run from November 2025 through January 2026.

It will involve officers from the State Criminal Investigation Department, Police Mobile Force, Counter Terrorism Unit, the Department of Operations, and all divisional police formations in the FCT.

Commissioner of Police Benneth Igweh Dantawaye said the exercise is designed to identify and arrest criminals hiding in various parts of the city. He added that police teams will focus on black spots, criminal hideouts, and vulnerable communities to ensure the safety of residents.

He said the operation will be carried out with intensity and consistency and directed all officers to take full control of identified areas to prevent criminal activities.

The Commissioner warned officers involved to carry out their duties with professionalism and respect for human rights, stressing that no act of misconduct will be tolerated.

He urged residents to cooperate with security personnel and to report any suspicious movements to the nearest police station. Dantawaye also reminded the public that community support remains crucial to maintaining peace and security in the FCT.
