The Nigeria Police Trust Fund (NPTF) has announced plans to provide housing for retiring officers and promote farming initiatives aimed at improving the welfare of personnel in the Nigeria Police Force.

The Executive Secretary of the NPTF, Mohammed Sheidu, explained that the housing scheme is designed to give officers leaving active service decent accommodation, addressing a longstanding welfare concern within the Force. The agricultural program will encourage officers to engage in farming as both a source of food security and a supplementary income stream.

“The Nigeria Police Force needs public trust to function effectively. Supporting the Force improves the welfare of everyone,” Sheidu said, highlighting the Fund’s efforts in training, equipping, and providing facilities for officers since its inception.

He added, “We are ready to partner with the media to showcase the Nigeria Police Force positively, reflecting the critical role they play in national security.”

Sanusi Aliyu, Director of Fund Mobilisation and Partnership at the NPTF, praised Sheidu for his visionary leadership, while Muazu Elazeh assured support in promoting the Fund’s welfare programs and success stories.

President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday appointed Tunji Disu as Acting Inspector-General of Police (IGP), following the resignation of Kayode Egbetokun.

Mr Disu’s appointment comes just 48 days before he would have reached the mandatory retirement age of 60.

Appointment Close to Retirement

Born on 13 April 1966, Mr Disu enlisted in the Nigeria Police Force on 18 May 1992.

Under existing police regulations, officers must retire upon reaching 60 years of age or completing 35 years of service, whichever comes first. Without the new appointment, Mr Disu would have retired in April 2026 upon attaining the age limit.

Although he will only complete 35 years in service in May 2027, his elevation to the position of IGP entitles him to a statutory four-year tenure, unless he resigns or is removed by the president.

Similar Precedent Under Egbetokun

A similar situation occurred under Mr Egbetokun, who was appointed the 22nd IGP on 19 June 2023. Though initially set to retire upon attaining 60 years, amendments to the Police Act by the National Assembly now allow an Inspector-General to complete a four-year tenure regardless of age or years of service.

Mr Egbetokun’s appointment was confirmed by the Nigeria Police Council in October 2023, and he was expected to remain in office until October 2027 before resigning on Tuesday.

• A postgraduate diploma in International Relations and Strategic Studies

• A master’s degree in Public Administration from Adekunle Ajasin University

• A master’s degree in Criminology, Security and Legal Psychology from LASU

He has undergone professional training in areas including small arms smuggling, internet fraud, forensic intelligence and strategic leadership, both locally and internationally.

Mr Disu has served in multiple strategic roles across the country, including:

• Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in various states

• Commander of the Lagos State Rapid Response Squad (RRS) between 2015 and 2021

• Head of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT)

• Commissioner of Police in Rivers State and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja

• Assistant Inspector-General in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex, Alagbon, Lagos

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has ordered the withdrawal of police officers assigned to provide security for Very Important Persons (VIPs) across the country.

The directive, announced on Sunday by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, follows a high-level security meeting held at the State House in Abuja with the heads of the police, army, Air Force, and the Department of State Services (DSS).

According to the presidency, police personnel currently guarding VIPs will be redeployed to strengthen community policing and boost nationwide security operations.

Under the new policy, VIPs requiring armed escorts must now request operatives from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), freeing the police to focus on core law-enforcement duties.

The president also approved the recruitment of 30,000 additional police officers and directed urgent upgrades of training facilities in collaboration with state governments.

Nigeria continues to face rising security challenges, particularly in remote communities where police presence remains sparse. The presidency says the new measure aims to reverse that trend.

Sunday’s meeting was attended by Chief of Army Staff Lt-Gen Waidi Shaibu, Chief of Air Staff Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, and DSS Director-General Tosin Adeola Ajayi.

A powerful explosion rocked the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON) factory in Kaduna on Saturday, killing one person and leaving several others injured.

The blast, which occurred in the morning, was reportedly heard across several parts of Kaduna metropolis and neighboring communities, causing panic among residents.

Eyewitnesses confirmed that the injured were immediately evacuated to nearby medical facilities, including the Nigerian Army Reference Hospital in Kaduna, for treatment.

“The injured have been rushed to nearby hospitals, including the Nigerian Army Reference Hospital in Kaduna,” a source said.

Authorities say the exact cause of the explosion is yet to be determined. “Details of the incident are still emerging, and the cause of the explosion is yet to be determined. Further investigations are needed to determine the cause of the blast and the extent of the damage,” the source added.
