While acknowledging that the judiciary is largely composed of dedicated and courageous judges, she stressed the importance of maintaining high standards of integrity across the board.

Speaking at a public discourse organized by the Movement for Islamic Culture and Awareness (MICA), Justice Kekere-Ekun underscored the need for judges to hold themselves accountable to both ethical and moral principles. She called for a renewed commitment to transparency and impartiality, noting that the judiciary’s role is fundamental to upholding the rule of law and earning the public’s trust.

The event also featured remarks from prominent figures, including the Emir of Kano, His Royal Majesty Khalifa Muhammad Sanusi II, who urged Supreme Court justices to administer justice with the fear of God and warned against succumbing to external pressures. Sanusi reminded judges of their accountability to God, encouraging them to prioritize substantive justice over technicalities.

Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Dr. Wale Babalakin also weighed in, decrying the influence of political figures over the judiciary, which he argued undermines judicial independence. Babalakin called for urgent reforms to restore judicial autonomy and integrity, emphasizing that the judiciary must be free from undue influence to maintain its credibility.

Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), reinforced the importance of fairness within the legal system, urging legal professionals to uphold ethical standards. He highlighted that the quality of Nigeria’s legal system depends on the integrity of its practitioners.

Other speakers, including former Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola (SAN), underscored the role of law as a pillar of society, urging judges and lawyers alike to respect its principles. As the CJN and other prominent voices call for introspection within the judiciary, the message is clear: integrity and accountability are essential to restoring public confidence in Nigeria’s legal system.
