United States President Donald Trump has confirmed that American forces carried out multiple airstrikes on Islamic State (ISIS) fighters in Nigeria, describing the operation as decisive and warning that further military action would follow if attacks on civilians persist.

Trump disclosed the development late Thursday through a series of posts on his Truth Social platform, stating that the strikes were executed under his authority as Commander-in-Chief.

According to him, the operation targeted ISIS elements operating in Northwestern Nigeria, whom he accused of orchestrating sustained attacks on civilians, particularly Christians.

“At my direction, the United States launched a powerful and deadly strike against ISIS terrorists in Northwest Nigeria,” Trump wrote. “These terrorists have been viciously killing innocent people, and tonight, they paid the price.”

Pentagon Confirms Operation in Coordination With Nigeria

The strikes were later confirmed by U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM), which stated that American forces conducted the operation on December 25, 2025, in Sokoto State, in coordination with Nigerian security authorities. AFRICOM said the strikes resulted in the deaths of multiple ISIS fighters, although it did not immediately release casualty figures.

“At the direction of the President and the Secretary of War, and in coordination with Nigerian authorities, U.S. Africa Command conducted strikes against ISIS terrorists in Nigeria,” the command said in a post on X.

U.S. Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth also acknowledged the operation, describing it as a response to persistent attacks by extremist groups. He expressed appreciation for the cooperation of the Nigerian government, stressing that the operation reflected joint counterterrorism efforts.

“The President was clear: the killing of innocent civilians in Nigeria must end,” Hegseth said. “The Department of War is always ready, and ISIS found that out.”

Strike Follows Deadly Maiduguri Mosque Bombing

The U.S. airstrikes came barely 24 hours after a deadly explosion ripped through a mosque in Maiduguri, Borno State, killing at least five worshippers and injuring dozens. Nigerian authorities suspect the incident was a suicide bombing linked to extremist groups operating in the region.

Security analysts say the timing of the U.S. operation suggests a broader response to escalating militant violence across Nigeria, particularly in the North-East and North-West regions where Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) remain active.

Trump Issues Fresh Warning

Trump used the announcement to issue a stern warning to militant groups operating in Nigeria, stating that the United States would not hesitate to carry out additional strikes if attacks continue. He emphasized that under his leadership, Washington would not allow extremist groups to gain a foothold or threaten civilian populations.

“If the slaughter continues, there will be many more strikes,” Trump said, adding that U.S. military capability remains unmatched.

The former president has previously criticized Nigeria’s handling of insecurity. In November, he warned that the U.S. could cut off aid and take direct military action if Nigerian authorities failed to stem the violence against civilians.

The United Kingdom’s Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office (FCDO) has issued a fresh travel advisory cautioning British nationals against visiting six Nigerian states due to escalating insecurity, violent crime, terrorism, and kidnappings.

The affected states are Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, Gombe, Katsina, and Zamfara, where threats from Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa remain high, particularly around transport hubs, religious sites, and public gatherings.

The advisory also recommends avoiding all but essential travel to Bauchi, Kaduna, Kano, Kebbi, Jigawa, Sokoto, Niger, Kogi, Plateau, Taraba, and the outer suburbs of Abuja.

British nationals were advised to exercise extreme caution, monitor local media, avoid protests or large gatherings, and follow instructions from local authorities.

The FCDO highlighted risks across Nigeria’s North-East, South-East, South-South, and South-West regions, citing active militant groups, secessionist activity, and rising violent crime in major cities including Lagos.

The advisory notes that while foreign nationals are not usually specifically targeted, travelers could be caught in attacks or criminal incidents.

Residents and visitors in the North-East, particularly in Maiduguri, were warned that worsening security could make leaving the city extremely difficult.

The FCDO emphasizes the importance of contingency planning and heightened vigilance for anyone traveling to affected areas.

Armed men suspected to be kidnappers on Friday night launched a deadly ambush on operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Okpella, Etsako East Local Government Area of Edo State, killing eight officers and abducting a Chinese expatriate.

The attack, which occurred at about 10 p.m. near the BUA Cement Factory, also left four officers seriously injured. Security sources confirmed that four other expatriates were rescued during the assault.

According to CSC Afolabi Babawale, the NSCDC’s National Public Relations Officer, the gunmen targeted a convoy of operatives assigned to protect expatriates at the cement plant.

“The convoy of NSCDC personnel and expatriates was ambushed in a three-hour gun battle, leaving eight personnel dead, four injured, one expatriate missing, and four others rescued,” Babawale said in a statement on Saturday.

The Commandant-General of NSCDC, Prof. Ahmed Abubakar Audi, described the fallen officers as patriots who paid the ultimate price in service to the nation. He ordered that they be buried with full honours.

“Their labour, commitment, and patriotism will forever be remembered. This tragic incident will not deter the Corps from fulfilling its mandate of safeguarding critical national assets,” Audi said.

He also disclosed that joint operations involving security agencies have begun in surrounding forests to rescue the abducted expatriate and apprehend the attackers.

The Edo State NSCDC Commandant, Agun Gbenga, has visited the scene of the attack and the hospital where the wounded operatives are receiving treatment. Security reinforcements have since been deployed to the area.

The killings came just hours after a separate abduction incident on the Benin-Auchi Road, where 16 passengers were kidnapped and taken into the forest. Edo Police spokesperson Moses Yamu confirmed that all victims have since been rescued through a joint operation involving police, vigilantes, and local hunters.

The back-to-back incidents have raised fresh concerns about insecurity in Edo State, particularly along major highways and industrial corridors. Security forces have pledged intensified patrols and coordinated operations to prevent further attacks.
