The Ogun State Government has issued a seven-day quit notice to the management of the Ibara Housing Estate Mosque in Abeokuta, warning that the over 25-year-old structure may be demolished.

The notice, dated November 5, 2025, was signed by the General Manager of the Ogun State Planning and Development Permit Authority and directed the mosque community to vacate the premises within one week. It also stated that the government would not be responsible for any loss or damage during the demolition.

Part of the notice read: “You are hereby informed to vacate the property within seven days from the date of service of this notice. Remove all valuables within the specified time. The Authority will not be liable for any claim or compensation for properties damaged or destroyed during the demolition.”

Officials reportedly served the notice shortly after the Zuhr (noon) prayers, which caused concern among worshippers who described the action as sudden and unfair.

Findings showed that the mosque had not previously received any formal warning or contravention notice. However, a separate document titled “Notice of Contravention,” signed by the same General Manager, was also delivered on the same day.

The contravention notice alleged that the mosque had changed its use from residential to public worship and had carried out development without official approval. It ordered the management to submit all relevant planning documents, including development permits, within 24 hours or restore the property to its original residential purpose within seven days.

The authority cited violations of the Urban and Regional Planning and Development Law No. 61 of 2022, warning that failure to comply would result in demolition after due process.

Members of the mosque community have appealed to the government to reconsider the decision and engage in dialogue to resolve the matter peacefully.

He reminded stakeholders that all physical developments whether above ground, underground, or over water—are subject to planning laws and must be regularized accordingly. Speaking earlier, the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Engr. Sakirudeen Salaam, cautioned banks to act promptly, warning that non-compliance could lead to avoidable reputational setbacks for the financial institutions involved.

On behalf of the banking sector, Shamsudeen Oyeneye from Jaiz Bank acknowledged the government’s effort to clarify the process and pledged better cooperation moving forward.

The lawmakers, under the leadership of Hon. Damilola Soneye, have expressed frustration over the refusal of eight individuals previously invited to respond to allegations of unauthorized sales of government-owned land at the Ibido Community Area within the Sagamu Estate. The accused Mr. Emmanuel Osho, Mr. Folabi Osho, Mr. Moshood Lawal Keji, Mr. Owodunni Sodipo, Mr. Adeyiga Jeje Lambo, Mr. Abiodun Soneye, Mr. Tikare, and Mr. Hammed Sodipe are now facing the possibility of arrest if they fail to appear before the committee by 12:00 noon on Thursday, June 26, 2025.

In a parallel case, the committee also summoned another group of nine individuals accused of land grabbing activities at the Housing Corporation’s Itanrin Estate in Ijebu-Ode. These individuals Mr. Sikiru Shittu Onakoya, Mr. Ismail Onakoya, Mr. Azeez Shittu Onakoya, Mr. Tunde Onakoya, Alhaji Olukorede Baoku, Mr. Adeleke Yekeen Abu, Alhaji Ikililu Alawiye, Chief Akeem Abajo, and Mr. Adegunwa Kunle Oluwatosin—must also appear before the Assembly by 1:00 pm on the same day.

The state government provided significant support to the 80 farmers involved in the cassava project. The farmers received a 65% subsidy on land clearing and 50% discounts on cassava stems, herbicides, pesticides, and fertilizers. Each farmer is expected to earn at least N2.4 million from their harvest.

Access to markets has been a challenge for farmers. However, the state government addressed this by connecting the farmers to reliable buyers who will purchase their produce right after harvest. This ensures that farmers won’t face post-harvest losses.

Governor Abiodun emphasized the importance of transforming the agricultural sector and urged more farmers to take part in future programs. He stressed that collaboration is key to achieving food sufficiency in Ogun State.

Mr. Abiodun Yusuph, speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, expressed gratitude for the support. He shared that the government had covered 65% of the cost for the first and second ploughing, and subsidized 50% of the cost of fertilizers and other farming inputs, which made farming easier.

Dr. Ope Adejuwon, the representative of the agricultural sector project manager, clarified that the empowerment program targets only active farmers. “This initiative is for genuine farmers who are actively engaged in farming,” he said.

Omoniyi further disclosed that the remaining subscribers will be allocated their homes in the first quarter of 2025 within the eco-friendly Phase 3 of the estate. Additionally, due to the high demand for affordable housing, Phase 4 of the Prince Court Estate Kobape Scheme will be unveiled soon.

The commissioner noted that new subscribers are required to pay N3.5 million as a subsidized contribution for the estate’s infrastructure, aligning with the terms set for previous allottees. He emphasized that payment must be completed within 60 days from the date of allocation to secure the final allocation letters from the Ministry of Housing.

Failure to meet this requirement, he warned, would result in the withdrawal of the allocation.

Reiterating the ministry’s commitment to delivering on the housing policy of Governor Dapo Abiodun’s administration, Omoniyi also announced other ongoing projects. These include the Gateway Aviation Village in Iperu-Remo, the GRA Regeneration Scheme in Abeokuta, Ijebu Ode, and Ilaro, as well as the PMB Estate. These projects are scheduled for commissioning in the coming year.

Former National President of the NITP, Nathaniel Atebije, urged planners to embrace innovation and technology to facilitate the seamless exchange of ideas among agencies. He also announced the upcoming launch of the NITP’s Ten-Year Strategic Development Plan to guide urban planning efforts nationwide.

In his remarks, Ogun State’s Commissioner for Housing, Jagunmolu Jamiu Omoniyi, acknowledged challenges in implementing the state’s developmental plan due to inconsistencies from previous administrations. The Ogun State Government has introduced a new requirement mandating that all building constructions exceeding two floors must now obtain an All Risk Insurance Policy Certificate.

This directive was announced by the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Olatunji Odunlami, during a stakeholders’ meeting held in Abeokuta, the state capital, on Thursday.

The policy aligns with the Ogun State Building Production Management Authority Regulation (OGBPMA) 2022 provisions. According to Odunlami, the All Risk Insurance Policy is now compulsory for contractors and developers, providing coverage for human and material assets throughout the construction period.

This includes protection for workers on-site, individuals with lawful access, construction materials, and equipment, and safeguarding against injuries, losses, or damages.

“The coverage also extends to innocent passers-by, their properties, adjacent buildings, and animals within the vicinity of construction projects,” Odunlami added.

In addition to the All Risk Insurance Policy, the Commissioner stated that property owners and future occupiers must secure a Building Insurance Policy to protect the building from potential risks such as fire outbreaks, structural damage, collapse, and other unforeseen events.

Odunlami reaffirmed the commitment of Governor Dapo Abiodun’s administration to enhancing public safety and reducing accidents at construction sites. He emphasized that this new insurance policy would not only safeguard workers and the public but also shield investors and developers from financial losses, foster a culture of risk management, and support the growth of a resilient and sustainable construction industry in Ogun State.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Engr.
