The discussion follows the government’s decision to demolish properties reportedly used for criminal activities amid rising insecurity and public demands for stronger action against kidnappers.

Supporters of the demolitions argue that buildings used as hideouts for kidnappers or for storing illegal weapons become part of criminal enterprises and therefore pose a threat to public safety. They maintain that decisive actions against such properties could serve as a deterrent and demonstrate the government’s commitment to combating violent crimes.

However, legal experts and rights advocates have raised concerns about due process, property rights, and the implications of executive actions that result in the destruction of private assets. Some stakeholders contend that confiscation or forfeiture of such properties may achieve security objectives while preserving economic value and protecting constitutional safeguards.

Critics have also questioned whether innocent property owners should bear the consequences of crimes committed by tenants or occupants without adequate judicial processes. They warn that actions perceived as arbitrary could weaken public confidence in governance and create concerns about the protection of individual rights.

The debate reflects broader national concerns over how governments should respond to worsening insecurity while maintaining respect for constitutional principles. Across several states, authorities have increasingly adopted aggressive measures targeting properties associated with criminal activities, highlighting the growing tension between public safety and private rights.

Stakeholders insist that while Nigerians want stronger action against kidnappers, there is also a need to ensure that anti-crime measures remain lawful, proportionate, and consistent with democratic principles and the rule of law.

The community members expressed concerns over what they described as attempts by individuals to unlawfully take control of land belonging to local families and residents.

According to community leaders, the dispute has created tension among residents, prompting calls for urgent action from both traditional and government authorities. They urged the Olubadan and the state government to investigate the allegations and ensure that lawful landowners receive protection under existing laws.

The residents maintained that resolving the matter quickly is necessary to prevent further disputes and maintain stability within the affected community. They also called for transparent verification of land ownership records and stronger enforcement against illegal land acquisition practices.

The appeal comes amid growing concerns over land-related disputes in parts of Ibadan. The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, has repeatedly warned traditional title holders and community leaders against supporting land-grabbing activities, stressing that offenders could face prosecution and sanctions.

The monarch has also advocated stronger legal frameworks to tackle land grabbing, describing the practice as a threat to investment, development, and peaceful coexistence in Ibadan. He has called for tougher enforcement measures and quicker resolution of land disputes through established legal channels.

Stakeholders believe that effective collaboration between traditional institutions, government agencies, and law enforcement authorities will be essential to addressing recurring land disputes and improving confidence in land administration across Oyo State.

The directive was issued by the Chairman of the Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority (OYRTMA), Adesagba Adekoya, a retired Army Major, during a briefing in Ibadan. He emphasized that converting walkways into business points is unlawful and contributes to traffic congestion, accidents, and general discomfort for road users.

Adekoya highlighted several hotspot areas where illegal trading has become rampant, including the University of Ibadan (U.I.) axis, Samonda, and Mokola, among others.

He stressed that traders must immediately move to designated market locations—especially as the festive season approaches—warning that violators will face fines and possible court prosecution.

The state government also praised OYRTMA for its ongoing efforts to maintain order, enhance road safety, and improve pedestrian access. Officials reiterated the administration’s commitment to upgrading urban infrastructure and ensuring safer, more organized movement across Oyo State.

These individuals were affected by the ongoing Ibadan Circular Road Corridor development.

This new payment brings total compensation to more than ₦300 million. The sum covers those impacted by the Circular Road works, the Ajia overhead bridge, and construction along the Iseyin/Ogbomoso Road.

The Commissioner for Lands and Urban Development, Mr. Williams Akin-Funmilayo, announced the payment at the Ministry of Lands, Secretariat, Ibadan. He said Governor Seyi Makinde directed the prompt payment to ease the burden on affected residents.

Since the start of the exercise, the first ₦200 million was paid to property owners. A further ₦100 million followed for those affected by bridge construction. This current ₦100 million benefits over 40 more owners along the Circular Road.

Akin-Funmilayo explained that ancient villages along the project route would be preserved. They will be integrated into the plan to avoid unnecessary displacement. He also clarified that the corridor widths were set by previous administrations.

The corridor will host modern facilities such as hospitals and recreation centres. These developments aim to attract local and foreign investors to Oyo State.

He noted that New Town and City Development manages the Circular Road project. The Ministry of Lands handles property enumeration and compensation payments.

Beneficiaries praised the government for its empathy and swift action. Adeyemi Peter, one property owner, thanked the administration and urged priority payments for elderly recipients.

More compensation rounds are planned in the coming weeks. The government hopes the Ibadan Circular Road will strengthen the state’s transport system and boost economic growth.

Governor Seyi Makinde is not slowing down as his administration enters its final phase, approving ₦63.4 billion to completely transform the Oyo State Government House.

The massive upgrade comes after years of the Governor and his deputy avoiding the official residence, which has now been deemed unbefitting for state leaders. Plans are also in motion to complete the long-delayed banquet hall in time for Oyo’s 50th anniversary next year.

Adding to the spending wave, the state will inject ₦131.7 million into landscaping by hiring professional gardeners to maintain the grounds of the upgraded complex.

On another front, Oyo is stepping in to enhance aviation safety and capacity by spending ₦14.3 billion on new Instrument Landing Systems for the Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport, a move prompted by damage to the previous equipment installed by the federal government.

AIHS 2025

The administration is also pushing ahead with its agricultural and international trade goals, approving the first phase of a service agreement for an international agro-food market in Ijaiye. The €2 million project is backed by the African Development Bank in partnership with French firm Semmaris, aiming to position Oyo as a key player in fresh produce export.

Preparations are also underway for the 2025 Oyo State International Tourism Summit, while ₦130 million has been approved for the New Towns and Cities Development Authority to address urban congestion and limit slum development.

To ensure these ambitious projects stay funded and on schedule, the state’s 2025 supplementary budget has been expanded by a significant ₦270.8 billion, signaling a determined finish to Makinde’s development agenda.

Lana Adeoye, CEO of Fendini Group, has made a passionate call for the overhaul of Nigeria’s housing strategy, describing the current policy as outdated and inadequate to tackle the nation’s growing housing deficit.

He urged the government to adopt bold and realistic reforms that can support the delivery of affordable mass housing across the country.

Speaking in a media statement on Tuesday, Adeoye said the housing sector remains a powerful driver of economic recovery, job creation, and empowerment if harnessed correctly. He stressed the importance of governments at all levels working hand in hand with professional bodies and research institutions to craft efficient, home-grown solutions that align with Nigeria’s unique realities.

Africa International Housing Show

Reaffirming Fendini Group’s mission, Adeoye spotlighted their flagship development, Rayfield Gardens City Estate in Ibadan, as an example of blending affordability with luxury. He praised the increasing acceptance of local building materials, a trend he believes could further reduce construction costs if widely embraced.

He also lauded the Oyo State Government for supporting the Rayfield Gardens initiative through a public-private partnership with OYSIPA, calling the estate one of the safest and most promising investments in the region. He particularly commended Governor Seyi Makinde’s leadership, saying the state’s development has taken center stage under his administration.

Adeoye assured that Fendini Group is committed to meeting project timelines and delivering serene, high-quality living spaces tailored to homebuyers’ needs. At the same time, he encouraged his team to stay resilient in the face of inevitable opposition and sabotage, saying those making real impact are often the targets of envy and falsehoods.

He concluded with a message of motivation: impact attracts resistance, but focus and results silence critics.
