The pupils and teacher abducted in Orire Local Government Area of Oyo State have regained their freedom after being rescued by security agencies.

The development was confirmed on Friday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, who announced the successful rescue of the victims.

Onanuga disclosed the development in a post on his verified X account, describing the rescue as a major breakthrough in ongoing efforts to combat kidnapping.

“Finally, all the kidnapped pupils and teachers in Orire, Oyo have been rescued by our security agencies,” he wrote.

He, however, did not provide details of the operation or disclose the identities of those involved in the rescue.

The victims’ release has brought relief to their families, residents of Orire and other stakeholders who had expressed concern over their safety since the abduction.

The incident had sparked widespread anxiety in the community, with parents, traditional leaders and residents calling for urgent intervention to secure the safe return of the schoolchildren and their teacher.

Although the victims have now regained their freedom, authorities are yet to reveal whether they were rescued during a security operation, released after negotiations or freed under any other circumstances.

It also remains unclear whether any ransom was paid before their release.

Security agencies are expected to provide further updates as investigations continue to uncover those responsible for the abduction and the circumstances surrounding the victims’ freedom.

The successful rescue comes amid intensified efforts by security agencies to curb kidnapping and other violent crimes across Oyo State and other parts of Nigeria.

The Federal Government has raised concerns over what it described as repeated errors in the official appellation of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu by organisations and media platforms, warning against further misuse of the president’s title in public communications.

The clarification was issued on Friday in Abuja by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, through a statement signed by his media adviser, Yomi Odunuga.

According to the SGF, the warning became necessary after a national newspaper reportedly published an incorrect designation for the president in one of its editions circulated on Wednesday, May 7, 2026.

Akume stressed that the correct and official title of the Nigerian leader remains: “His Excellency, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

The government noted that the increasing frequency of such mistakes in official documents, publications and public references was unacceptable and avoidable.

He urged media organisations, institutions and members of the public to verify official titles and designations before publication or public use to prevent what he described as embarrassing inaccuracies in both print and digital platforms.

The SGF further advised that verification of official information relating to the presidency and government offices could be obtained through approved communication channels, including official social media handles on Facebook, Instagram and X, as well as designated government email platforms.

President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to Nigeria’s ongoing economic reforms, assuring the World Bank that there will be no reversal despite the initial hardship faced by citizens.

Tinubu gave the assurance on Tuesday while receiving a World Bank delegation led by the Managing Director of Operations, Anna Bjerde, at the State House in Abuja. He described the reform agenda as a necessary pathway to stabilising the economy and unlocking opportunities for Nigeria’s growing population.

According to the President, although the reforms were difficult at the onset, abandoning them would undermine long-term national development. He stressed that his government has chosen a firm path and remains focused on delivering sustainable economic growth.

Tinubu said Nigeria, as Africa’s largest economy, must take bold steps to reposition itself, particularly through reforms in agriculture, infrastructure, and fiscal management. He called on the World Bank to support efforts aimed at expanding mechanised farming, improving access to quality seedlings, and strengthening the availability of locally produced fertilisers.

The President explained that his administration’s reform choices included ending the fuel subsidy regime and unifying the foreign exchange market, decisions he acknowledged caused inflationary pressure in the short term. However, he maintained that the measures were essential to address longstanding structural distortions.

He noted that inflation has begun to ease and that the naira has shown increased stability, attributing the progress to consistent policy direction and improved transparency. Tinubu added that reforms would continue to prioritise accountability, reduced waste, and better use of public resources.

The President urged the World Bank to explore innovative financing models that would accelerate growth, reduce excessive intermediaries, manage investment risks, and build the skills of Nigerians, especially the youth population.

In her response, Bjerde commended Tinubu’s consistency and resolve in implementing reforms over the past two years, describing the outcomes as remarkable. She said Nigeria has become a reference point in global discussions with policymakers and investors due to the administration’s steady approach.

Bjerde noted that many countries often slow down or reverse reforms when challenges arise, but Nigeria’s leadership has remained firm, sending a strong signal to the international community. She added that the clarity of direction has boosted investor confidence.

She disclosed that the World Bank’s engagement with Nigeria is anchored on the country’s long-term development vision, including its ambition to grow the economy to $1 trillion and achieve a seven per cent growth rate.

Job creation, according to the World Bank official, remains central to the partnership, especially as Africa’s youthful population continues to expand. She highlighted that infrastructure development, agricultural modernisation, digital innovation, and access to finance for small and medium-sized enterprises are key areas of focus.

Bjerde revealed that the World Bank’s public sector portfolio in Nigeria currently stands at about $17 billion, making the country one of its largest clients. She added that private sector operations through the International Finance Corporation have grown significantly, while risk guarantees provided by the Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency are expected to expand further.

She also disclosed plans for a new Development Policy Operation designed to support Nigeria’s budget and reform agenda, noting that the instrument aligns directly with the government’s policy direction.

The World Bank official praised Nigeria’s efforts in digital development and human capital investment, describing them as critical drivers of youth employment and long-term productivity. She said the institution remains committed to supporting reforms that promote inclusive growth and poverty reduction.

Tinubu, in closing, reiterated that his administration would continue to engage international partners while maintaining ownership of its reform agenda, stressing that Nigeria’s future prosperity depends on discipline, courage, and consistency.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the posting of four ambassador-designates to key diplomatic missions in the United States, United Kingdom, France, and Turkey, marking the first batch of foreign postings following Senate confirmation of nominees last year.

A statement issued on Thursday by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Mr Bayo Onanuga, confirmed the development.

According to the statement, Ambassador Ayodele Oke has been cleared as Nigeria’s ambassador-designate to France, while Colonel Lateef Are has been approved for posting to the United States of America.

Also approved is Ambassador Aminu Dalhatu, a former Nigerian envoy to South Korea, who has been designated as the High Commissioner to the United Kingdom.

In addition, former Kebbi State governor, Usman Isa Dakingari Suleiman, has been named ambassador-designate to Turkey, where President Tinubu is expected to embark on a state visit next week.

The President has directed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to immediately notify the host countries of the approved postings in line with established diplomatic protocols.

Recall that President Tinubu transmitted an initial list of ambassadorial nominees to the Senate in November 2025, following nearly two years of vacancies across Nigeria’s foreign missions. A supplementary list of 32 nominees was later forwarded.

In December, the Senate confirmed 64 nominees, bringing the total number of confirmed ambassador-designates to 67.

Apart from the four recently approved postings, other confirmed nominees include former presidential aide Reno Omokri, ex-INEC Chairman Mahmood Yakubu, former Aviation Minister Femi Fani-Kayode, and former Oyo State First Lady, Fatima Florence Ajimobi, among others.

The gradual deployment of the ambassadors is expected to strengthen Nigeria’s diplomatic presence and international engagements under the Tinubu administration.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the reappointment of Brigadier-General Mohammed Buba Marwa (rtd) as Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for another five-year term.

The announcement was made on Friday by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy.

Marwa, first appointed in 2021 by former President Muhammadu Buhari, will now lead the NDLEA until 2031. Before his initial appointment, he chaired the Presidential Advisory Committee for the Elimination of Drug Abuse from 2018 to 2020.

A former military governor of Lagos and Borno States, Marwa is an alumnus of the Nigerian Military School, the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), the University of Pittsburgh, and Harvard University. His military career includes roles as brigade major of the 23 Armoured Brigade, Aide-de-Camp to the Chief of Army Staff, and Defence Adviser at Nigeria’s Mission to the United Nations.

During his tenure, the NDLEA recorded major drug busts, including the arrest of over 73,000 drug traffickers and the seizure of more than 15 million kilogrammes of illicit substances.

The agency also intensified nationwide campaigns against drug abuse.

President Tinubu commended Marwa’s performance, describing his renewed term as a vote of confidence and urging him to sustain the agency’s momentum against drug trafficking and abuse.

In a dramatic display of his trademark flair for spectacle, U.S. President Donald Trump has kicked off a massive $250 million renovation project at the White House, beginning with the partial demolition of the East Wing. Construction crews were seen tearing down sections of the building on Monday as part of Trump’s plan to build a grand new presidential ballroom.

Speaking while hosting college baseball players at the White House, Trump remarked, “Right on the other side you have a lot of construction that you might hear occasionally.” Later that day, the 79-year-old president officially announced on Truth Social that work had begun on what he described as “a big, beautiful White House Ballroom.”

According to Trump, the East Wing will be “fully modernized” as part of the expansion. Traditionally, the East Wing houses the offices of the First Lady, while the President works in the West Wing and resides in the Executive Mansion.

The new 90,000-square-foot ballroom, capable of hosting up to 1,000 guests, is intended for large state dinners and other events that currently require outdoor tents. Trump emphasized that the project will be privately funded by “generous patriots, great American companies, and, yours truly,” noting that the ballroom will serve future generations.

Last week, Trump hosted a lavish donor dinner at the White House attended by executives from major firms including Amazon, Apple, Meta, Google, Microsoft, and Lockheed Martin, as well as crypto entrepreneurs Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss.

The ballroom project marks the most ambitious phase of Trump’s ongoing White House makeover since returning to office in January, a series of changes that also includes gold décor in the Oval Office and a redesigned Rose Garden. The Surveyor-General of the Federation, Abudulganiyu Adebomehin, has announced a crackdown on illegal shoreline structures in Nigeria. All such buildings will be demolished.

In a statement issued by the Head of Information and Public Relations, Henry David, Adebomehin explained that the Office of the Surveyor-General of the Federation (OSGOF) now operates under the Presidency. He said this move gives the office more powers and responsibilities in managing Nigeria’s shoreline areas.

The Surveyor-General directed that all applications for Certificates of Occupancy, permits, and survey plans along shorelines be suspended. “These requests will remain on hold until they are reviewed and approved by OSGOF,” he said.

He also ordered the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) to submit all past shoreline-related approvals to his office. In addition, he warned that any documents already submitted to other agencies must now be redirected to OSGOF.

Adebomehin criticized some state governments for allocating shoreline land without OSGOF’s involvement. He stressed that such actions go against the law. “The enforcement unit will demolish any illegal structure within the shoreline right of way. This is an executive order. It complies with the Law of the Sea,” he stated. He also emphasized that OSGOF holds the official maps required for shoreline management.

The Surveyor-General praised the Nigerian Institution of Surveyors (NIS) and the Association of Private Practising Surveyors of Nigeria (APPSN) for supporting the profession. He assured them of continuous collaboration.

During the visit, NIS Surveyor-General Folakemi Odunewu congratulated Adebomehin on OSGOF’s transition to the Presidency. She presented the institution’s seven-point agenda, which includes digital transformation of the National Secretariat, stronger public relations and advocacy, broader engagement with stakeholders, review of the Survey Coordination Act, development of professional excellence structures, and advocacy for a dedicated Ministry of Surveying and Geoinformatics.
