President Bola Tinubu has approved over N3.9 trillion for 27 key infrastructure projects across 15 states. The multi-trillion naira investment aims to drastically upgrade the national transport network, enhancing economic connectivity and safety. The Minister of Works, David Umahi, announced the major decision on Monday following a Federal Executive Council meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. According to the minister, the extensive road interventions will span Adamawa, Benue, Cross River, Ebonyi, Ekiti, Kogi, Kwara, Lagos, Niger, Ondo, Osun, Oyo, Plateau, Taraba, and Yobe states.

A major highlight of the executive approvals is the re-award of a 409-kilometre dual carriageway project in Niger State. This specific contract was handed to businessman Aliko Dangote at a cost of N1.8 trillion under the Federal Government’s tax credit scheme. Additionally, the administration sanctioned N276 billion for the dualisation of the Ilorin-Ogbomoso Road, N265 billion to reconstruct the Iseyin-Eruwa-Agbesi Road linking Oyo and Kwara states, and N217 billion for dualising the old alignment from Ijaye through the Federal Government College to Ilorin Road, complete with a spur to Akinmorin.

Other high-value allocations feature N116 billion earmarked for the 21-kilometre Abakaliki-Afikpo Road in Ebonyi State, alongside N110 billion for the Ogbomoso-Oko Illupu Road traversing Oyo and Osun states. He explained that the bank has facilitated the development of thousands of housing units across the country while providing mortgage loans to contributors under the National Housing Fund (NHF) scheme.

The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, has welcomed the latest figures from the National Bureau of Statistics showing that Nigeria’s real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) expanded by 4.07 per cent in the fourth quarter of 2025.

In a statement signed by Assistant Director, Information and Public Relations, Mrs Uloma Amadi, Edun described the development as evidence of broad-based economic expansion and strengthening macroeconomic stability under the leadership of Bola Tinubu.

“This marks the second time in a decade—excluding the immediate post-pandemic rebound—that quarterly growth has exceeded 4 per cent. It follows the 4.23 per cent growth recorded in Q2 2025 and represents a clear improvement from 3.76 per cent in Q3 2024,” the Minister stated.

Sectoral Performance Drives Expansion

According to the Minister, growth in the fourth quarter was supported by all three major sectors of the economy—agriculture, industry, and services.

Agriculture expanded by 4.0 per cent, up from 2.54 per cent in Q4 2024, supported by improved security in food-producing areas and better access to inputs.

Industry grew by 3.88 per cent, compared to 2.49 per cent in the corresponding period of 2024, driven by improved foreign exchange liquidity, energy sector reforms, and stronger investor confidence.

The services sector recorded 4.15 per cent growth, reflecting continued expansion in finance, telecommunications, trade, and technology-driven activities. The sector retained its position as the largest contributor to overall output.

Edun noted that approximately 30 subsectors recorded growth above 3 per cent, underscoring the breadth and diversification of the current expansion.

Full-Year Growth and Economic Size

For the full year 2025, Nigeria’s real GDP grew by 3.87 per cent, up from 3.38 per cent in 2024. The size of the economy increased to ₦441.5 trillion, compared with ₦372.8 trillion in the previous year.

The Minister attributed the improved performance to enhanced fiscal coordination, disciplined expenditure management, stronger revenue mobilisation, and continued structural reforms aimed at restoring macroeconomic credibility.

He said the latest data reinforces confidence among domestic and international investors and signals that Nigeria’s reform programme is gaining traction.

“The Ministry of Finance remains committed to sustained reform implementation, institutional coordination, and transparent engagement with stakeholders,” Edun added.

The GDP report released by the National Bureau of Statistics on Friday confirmed that the expansion was supported by growth across agriculture, industry, and services, with services maintaining its lead as the dominant sector in the economy.

The Honourable Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Arc. Ahmed Musa Dangiwa, has urged state governments, housing institutions, development finance institutions (DFIs), and other key stakeholders to actively participate in the National Homeownership and Housing Development Campaign. Arc. Dangiwa made the appeal while delivering a thematic address at the 14th meeting of the National Council on Lands, Housing and Urban Development in Ilorin, Kwara State. The campaign is set to launch in Katsina State on 4–5 March 2026 for the North-West geopolitical zone.

“The Campaign represents our determination to lead a unified approach to housing development, ensuring federal programmes, reforms, and private capital translate into visible, deliverable projects at the state level,” Dangiwa said.

Organised by the Know This Nigeria Network (KTNN) in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, the campaign includes Regional Executive Sessions and Public Homeownership Seminars to strengthen links between federal housing institutions, DFIs, and state governments.

Dangiwa highlighted that the initiative aligns with the Ministry’s Unified Housing Delivery Framework, designed to ensure federal and state governments work together as “One Coherent National Housing Delivery System” for sustainable homeownership and urban development.

QS Muhammed Baba Adamu, National Coordinator of the campaign, emphasized that the initiative will enable states to attract and deploy housing capital effectively and encouraged the establishment of State Housing Reform Offices (SHROs) to provide technical and advisory support for bankable housing projects.

Tension is mounting across four major residential estates in Karsana District, Abuja, following the controversial approval of a temporary market within estate boundaries by departments of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA).

Residents of Mabglobal Estate, Ipent 7, Efab Metropolitan and Efab Queens expressed fear and confusion after individuals were seen marking out spaces for market stalls inside the estates’ perimeter fences earlier this week.

The affected communities, located along the Dawaki–Karsana road corridor, have long battled the proliferation of illegal markets, shanties and drug dens. For years, they relied on the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) to clear such structures due to security concerns.

Under the leadership of the immediate past Director of Development Control, Mukhtar Galadima, illegal markets and shanties around the estates were repeatedly demolished, restoring relative calm. Galadima retired late in 2025.

Residents say the situation changed abruptly on Monday when unidentified persons arrived with security operatives to demarcate areas for a new market, triggering near confrontations with estate security personnel.

When challenged, the group reportedly presented a letter approving the establishment of an “informal market,” allegedly issued by the Department of Urban Affairs under the Abuja Metropolitan Management Council (AMMC).

The approval letter, dated August 20, 2025, with reference number AMMC/ADM/UA/1455, was reportedly signed by the Acting Director of Urban Affairs, Abubakar A. Makama. It granted Fasaha and Sons Global Services Nigeria Limited permission to operate a temporary market near Mabglobal and Queen Estate in Karsana.

The letter stated that since the applicant had completed required payments and was “already on ground,” operations could continue pending the issuance of a formal permit.

However, Vanguard checks revealed that following the demolition of the previous illegal market, no new construction occurred at the site until the letter resurfaced recently.

Residents insist the approval contradicts earlier engagements with FCDA officials. In a joint statement signed by Pharmacist Frederick Okonkwo, President of Mabglobal Estate Association, and Mr Chibuzor Ogbonnaya, Secretary General, the community recalled a 2023 meeting where the proposed relocation of traders to the estate perimeter was unanimously rejected.

According to the residents, the proposal was considered premature, unsafe and a direct threat to security, especially given rising concerns over criminal activities linked to informal markets.

They noted that only weeks earlier, FCDA officials had dismantled a nearby shanty, an action the community welcomed as a step toward improved safety.

“We are baffled and deeply worried that an arrangement previously rejected due to security risks is now being approved,” the statement said.

The residents warned that makeshift markets often become hubs for drug peddling, robbery and other criminal activities, urging the FCT Minister and relevant authorities to urgently halt the development.

They appealed for immediate intervention to preserve peace and protect lives and property within the estates.
