The Ijebu Kingdom is in mourning following the passing of its paramount ruler, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, who died at the age of 91  mere hours after the death of his close ally and former Nigerian president, Muhammadu Buhari.

Oba Adetona, who ascended the throne on April 2, 1960, ruled for over 64 remarkable years, earning his place in history as one of Nigeria’s longest-reigning traditional rulers. His leadership, wisdom, and grace earned him immense respect across generations.

But the monarch’s story was nearly cut short in the early 1980s. In 1983, Ogun State’s then-Governor, Olabisi Onabanjo, had signed an official order removing him from the throne, set to take effect on January 2, 1984. However, the tides of history shifted dramatically when Buhari’s military coup on December 31, 1983, halted the governor’s plan.

That moment not only saved Adetona’s reign but forged an unbreakable bond between him and Buhari — one sealed by fate and circumstance.

As the nation reels from the double blow, the legacy of the Awujale remains firmly etched in the hearts of his people — a symbol of strength, survival, and a monarchy protected by destiny.

Speaking during an All Progressives Congress (APC) caucus meeting held on January 25 at the Presidential Banquet Hall in Katsina State, Buhari emphasized his commitment to transparency, stating he left office without enriching himself unlawfully.

In his remarks, delivered in Hausa, Buhari revealed that he owns only three houses—one in Daura, his hometown in Katsina State, and two in Kaduna. He shared that he rents out one of the Kaduna properties and uses the income to cover his daily expenses. “After my eight years as a civil president, I have only three houses; one in Daura and two in Kaduna. I have given one out for renting where I get money for feeding,” he said.

Buhari reflected on the complexities of governing Nigeria, describing the country as one of the most challenging to lead. He stated that many Nigerians fail to understand the intricacies of managing a nation with such diversity and often rush to criticize leaders. “Nigeria is a difficult country to govern, but most Nigerians are unaware.

You will not understand the complexities of leadership and the country itself until you find yourself in the administrative position of the country,” he explained.

Since stepping down from office, Buhari said his health and overall well-being have improved significantly. “I look much better and healthier now than when I was the president of the country. Anybody that sees me now acknowledges that I look better than before,” he said, expressing relief over his post-presidency life.

The former president also reiterated his commitment to serving with integrity, affirming that no one could accuse him of amassing illicit wealth during his tenure. The APC caucus meeting was part of preparations for the upcoming local government elections in Katsina State.
