A faction of JonahCapital Nigeria Limited has called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to examine an alleged $300 million investment linked to the River Park Estate project in Abuja.

The group wants the anti-graft agency to confirm whether the money entered Nigeria and whether developers used it to fund the estate’s infrastructure.

Dr Adeniran Olatokunbo Ogunmuyiwa, a founding director and shareholder of JonahCapital, raised the concerns in a letter to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

The dispute forms part of an arbitration case reportedly before the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) in Paris.

JonahCapital Faction Disputes Funding Claim

Ogunmuyiwa disputes claims linked to Ghanaian businessman Samuel Esson Jonah that more than $300 million went into infrastructure at River Park Estate.

He said JonahCapital did not provide funding or infrastructure for the development.

Ogunmuyiwa also questioned the authority of the group pursuing the arbitration to act for JonahCapital. He said a dispute over the company’s ownership has led to competing corporate records.

According to him, the people behind the arbitration do not represent the legitimate owners or directors of the company.

The claims remain disputed. The other parties involved may contest them.

EFCC Petition Seeks Financial Records

The Nigerian faction later petitioned the EFCC over the River Park dispute. The commission reportedly received the petition on August 11.

The petition asks the agency to examine allegations of fraud, impersonation and false representations linked to the project.

The petitioners also want the EFCC to trace the alleged $300 million investment.

They asked investigators to review Certificates of Capital Importation, bank statements and foreign remittance records. They also listed Central Bank of Nigeria records, foreign exchange documents, investment agreements and audited accounts.

The group wants investigators to establish the source of the alleged funds. It also wants them to identify the Nigerian accounts that received the money.

Group Questions How Money Was Used

The petitioners said the alleged investment should have a clear financial record if the $300 million entered Nigeria.

They want the EFCC to determine the dates of the transfers and the amounts involved. They also want the agency to establish how the money allegedly funded the River Park project.

The petition names Samuel Esson Jonah, Kojo Mensah and other people said to have links with the arbitration.

The Nigerian faction also asked investigators to examine documents and claims submitted in the ICC proceedings.

Paulo Homes Named in Funding Dispute

The faction claims that Paulo Homes Limited financed major parts of River Park Estate.

It said the company provided funds for activities linked to the development. These allegedly included payments to indigenous communities, road construction and water infrastructure.

The group also made claims about Jonah’s previous position in JonahCapital. It alleged that he failed to provide capital he had agreed to contribute after joining the company as a shareholder.

It further alleged that Jonah lost his shareholder position around 2008.

The claims have not been independently verified.

Arbitration Follows Lease Agreement Dispute

The River Park dispute concerns Plot 4, Cadastral Zone E30, Lugbe West, Abuja.

The property is now known as River Park Estate.

The dispute followed the termination of a Development Lease Agreement involving JonahCapital Nigeria Limited and the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA).

The claimants reportedly maintain that the agreement remains valid until 2030.

A Lagos State High Court sitting in Yaba has restrained the Lagos State Government and four other defendants from taking possession of or interfering with a disputed property belonging to an 80-year-old widow in Lekki Peninsula Scheme I, pending the determination of a motion on notice.

Justice E.O. Ashade granted the interim injunction in favour of Chief H.A.K. Shonowo, who instituted the suit on behalf of herself and the estate of her late husband, Chief Owodiran Olusoga Shonowo.

The defendants in the case are the Lagos State Government, the Attorney-General of Lagos State, the Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Gary Sanusi and Dillon Consultants Nigeria Limited.

The claimant, represented by Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Babatunde Oni, urged the court to preserve the property, arguing that the defendants’ actions had caused her hardship and threatened her ownership rights.

The disputed property comprises 11 four-bedroom terrace houses, three three-bedroom flats, one two-bedroom flat and a commercial shop built on about 4,000/4,300 square metres of land located at Block 113, Plot Health Centre, Lekki Peninsula Scheme I, Eti-Osa Local Government Area of Lagos State.

In his ruling, Justice Ashade held that the claimant had established sufficient grounds for the grant of the interim order.

The court noted that parties involved in a pending case must refrain from taking actions capable of affecting the court’s jurisdiction or prejudicing the outcome of the matter.

Consequently, the judge restrained the defendants, their agents, representatives or privies from taking possession of, transferring, reassigning or interfering with the claimant’s possession and ownership rights over the property pending the hearing of the motion on notice.

The court also barred the fourth and fifth defendants from handing over the disputed property to any other person until the application before the court is determined.

As part of the conditions attached to the injunction, the court directed the claimant to file an undertaking in the sum of N1 million to indemnify the defendants should it later be established that the interim order ought not to have been granted.

Court documents revealed that the claimant and her late husband were jointly allocated the original parcel of land measuring about 7,312.865 square metres in 1996 under a Certificate of Occupancy issued by the Lagos State Government.

According to the claimant, the government revoked the Certificate of Occupancy in October 2020 but later reallocated about 4,000 square metres of the land to her in May 2021 following an appeal. A subsequent survey reportedly placed the land size at approximately 4,300 square metres.

She stated that she thereafter entered into a joint venture agreement with the fourth and fifth defendants to develop the property.

Under the agreement, the developers were expected to construct 22 four-bedroom terrace houses, six three-bedroom flats and two two-bedroom flats, with the claimant entitled to 11 terrace houses, three flats, one two-bedroom apartment and a commercial shop.

The widow alleged that although construction commenced in 2021 and her allocated units were expected to be delivered by August 2023, the developers repeatedly failed to hand over the completed properties despite several demands.

She further claimed that in March 2026 she was informed through WhatsApp that the Lagos State Government intended to take over the reallocated land.

The claimant insisted she had no contractual relationship with the Lagos State Government, the Attorney-General or the Governor, maintaining that her agreement was solely with the private developers.

Justice Ashade adjourned the case until July 9, 2026, for the hearing of the motion on notice.

Speaking during the meeting, Ambassador Ahmed reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations with Ghana and assured the Ghanaian delegation that the Federal Government would address the concerns through appropriate diplomatic and institutional channels.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has intervened in a dispute involving the alleged unauthorised sale of a property belonging to late Cross River State governorship candidate and elder statesman, Chief Wilfred Oden Inah.

The intervention follows petitions from members of the deceased’s family over the alleged sale of the property located at No. 63 Ibom Layout, Calabar, which they insist was not approved by all beneficiaries.

EFCC Invites Eldest Son Over Property Sale

Sources said the EFCC invited the first son of the deceased, Mr. Maurice Inah, to explain the circumstances surrounding the transaction.

He was reportedly questioned over the sale of the property, which was allegedly transferred to Mr. Emmanuel Emele for about ₦100 million.

According to family sources, Maurice was later detained but has since failed to return for further questioning, reportedly citing health challenges as reason for his absence.

Family Dispute Over Alleged Unauthorized Sale

Members of the Inah family have accused Maurice of selling the property without collective consent, insisting that the transaction violated their late father’s wishes regarding the estate.

One of the sons, Mr. Ofem Inah, described the sale as unacceptable, claiming the property was significantly undervalued.

“Our father’s position on the property was clear… it was to remain in the family and was not to be sold,” he said.

He alleged that the property—comprising a block of four flats and surrounding land—was valued between ₦300 million and ₦400 million, making the reported sale price questionable.

‘We Want Justice’ — Family Demands Reversal

Another sibling, Mrs. Mildred Ikheloa (née Inah), called for justice, insisting that their father’s wishes must be respected.

She demanded the reversal of the transaction and refund of the buyer’s payment, stating that due process was not followed.

“The money paid should be refunded to the buyer, and the property returned to the family,” she said.

EFCC Yet to Issue Official Statement

Homeowners at Dr Sam Nujoma Estate in the Galadimawa area of Abuja have appealed to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, to intervene in what they described as persistent security threats, alleged assault, and extortion by the estate developer, El Salem Nigeria Limited.

In a petition submitted to the Legal Secretariat of the FCT Administration (FCTA), the Chairman of the Residents Association, Mr. Ifeanyi Echefu, stated that homeowners legally purchased their plots and developed their properties, stressing that they are property owners and not tenants.

According to Echefu, officials of El Salem Nigeria Limited have allegedly refused to relinquish control of the estate despite having exhausted available land for sale. He further accused the company of using private security personnel to intimidate, harass, and assault residents.

Dispute Over Estate Ownership and Management

Echefu explained that the estate is situated on Plot 21, Cadastral Zone C17, Industrial Area II, Abuja. He noted that the land was originally allocated to the African University of Science and Technology (AUST) in 2007 before a sublease arrangement was entered into with El Salem Nigeria Limited.

He alleged that El Salem subsequently renamed the development as Dr Sam Nujoma Estate and engaged eight additional developers without obtaining the required approval from the FCTA.

The residents’ association further claimed that the land was designated in the FCTA development plan for student hostel accommodation and not for residential estate development.

Residents Seek Land Titles and Government Intervention

The homeowners urged the FCT Minister to facilitate the issuance of Rights of Occupancy (R-of-O) and Certificates of Occupancy (C-of-O) to legitimate property owners within the estate.

They also called for urgent government intervention to resolve the lingering dispute and ensure the safety and security of residents.

FCTA Advises Police Action

In a related development, the Director of Investigation and Prosecution in the FCTA Legal Department, Joseph Eriki, reportedly advised the Nigeria Police Force Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to arrest officials of El Salem Nigeria Limited and any individual claiming approval for land use outside its original educational purpose.

Eriki also accused the African University of Science and Technology of altering the approved land use without obtaining government authorization.

AUST Reacts

Responding to the controversy, the Country Director of the African University of Science and Technology, Mr. Adekoya Seyi, acknowledged the dispute and said efforts were underway to resolve the matter.

“We are not unaware of the issues. Discussions are ongoing and will soon be resolved. However, I am not going to yield to the demands of the FCTA Legal Department Director,” he said.

Efforts to obtain comments from the Executive Director of El Salem Nigeria Limited, Mr. Michael Onyebuchi, were unsuccessful as calls and messages sent to him were not returned at the time of filing this report.

A magistrate court in Ondo State has ordered the arrest and detention of a suspect in connection with an alleged land dispute that has drawn legal attention in the state capital.

The order was issued by a magistrate court sitting in Akure after the suspect, identified as Oba Adewale Sunday Boboye, reportedly failed to honour repeated court summons relating to the case.

Court documents indicate that the suspect is being investigated over allegations of forcefully entering a parcel of land belonging to Olrof Nigeria Limited and damaging property belonging to the company.

Allegations surrounding the land dispute

According to the charge filed before the court, the incident occurred on a parcel of land located along Igoba–Akure Road in the Igoba area of Akure.

The complainant alleged that the suspect unlawfully entered the property and carried out actions that resulted in damage to assets owned by the company.

Following the complaint, legal proceedings were initiated and the defendant was summoned to appear before the court to respond to the allegations.

However, court records show that the suspect failed to appear despite being formally invited to do so.

Further summons ignored

Legal proceedings in the matter were filed under Charge No: MAK/AMC/486/2025.

After the initial summons was reportedly ignored, the court issued another invitation to the suspect to appear before the magistrate.

Despite the second invitation, the defendant still failed to attend the hearing, prompting the court to take further action.

At the most recent sitting, I.O. Osobu appeared in court as the prosecutor handling the matter.

A.R. Omidougha represented the defendant, while Kehinde Aladedutire appeared for the nominal complainant in the dispute.

Court invokes criminal justice law

Presiding over the case, Senior Magistrate D.S. Sekoni invoked the provisions of Section 118 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law (ACJL) of Ondo State.

The law allows the court to compel the appearance of individuals who fail to comply with lawful summons issued during criminal proceedings.

Based on the provisions of the law, the magistrate ordered the arrest and detention of the suspect pending his appearance before the court.

The directive was contained in an official court document obtained through the office of the Chief Assistant Registrar, A.O. Akinola.

Suspect currently in detention

Following the court’s order, the suspect was reportedly taken into custody and is currently being detained at the office of the Assistant Inspector General of Police overseeing Zone 17.

Nigeria Police Force officials are expected to ensure the suspect is presented before the court at the next hearing.

Sources familiar with the case also disclosed that the suspect had previously faced legal action over a similar offence.

Although details of the earlier conviction were not immediately available, the information was referenced during proceedings related to the current case.

Next court hearing scheduled

The court has adjourned the case to March 18, 2026, when the suspect is expected to be formally arraigned.

During the hearing, the court is expected to read the charges against the defendant and allow legal proceedings to begin fully.

Residents and homeowners in Surulere Community, Amikanle, within Alimosho Local Council Area of Lagos, have raised alarm over the demolition of their properties, accusing suspected land grabbers of acting with police backing.

According to the residents, no fewer than 70 structures, including residential buildings, shops and perimeter fences, were pulled down during an enforcement exercise linked to Suit No: ID/732M/2010 between the Federal Housing Authority and Nurudeen Adewale & Bros (Nig) Ltd.

Some landlords claimed they were asked to pay as much as N55 million, while others were reportedly given demands of N30 million or N15 million.

Eyewitnesses said about 300 men stormed the community, presenting documents said to be from the housing authority authorising them to collect payments for property renewal. Residents alleged that those who failed to meet the payment demands saw their homes demolished.

Chairman of the Surulere Estate Community Development Area, Semiu Oladejo, accused officers from Zone 2 of the Nigeria Police Force and the Lagos State Taskforce of supervising the exercise.

“They came with around 300 hoodlums. The Nigeria Police should not give protection to thugs and land grabbers. Officers from Zone 2 and the Taskforce watched our properties being destroyed,” he said.

Other residents described continued harassment. One affected resident, identified as Oluwafewa, said security operatives accompanied the alleged thugs for about two weeks.

He claimed the group demanded that landlords purchase a N100,000 form, pay an initial N5 million, and clear the balance within two weeks, with different payment amounts assigned to different houses.

Another resident said similar incidents had occurred in the past, alleging that a relative lost his property a decade ago after failing to meet such demands.

Responding to the allegations, Zone 2 Police spokesperson, Afolayan Gbenga, denied that officers worked with thugs, stating that police presence was only to enforce a court order.

“It is not possible that officers went with thugs; we don’t use thugs,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Southwest Zonal Manager of the Federal Housing Authority, Rekiya Sani, wrote to the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, stating that the demolition carried out on January 27, 2026, at the FHA Estate in Abesan, Surulere, was done without the authority’s approval.

She noted that although the judgment was in favour of the agency, the execution supervised by the Lagos State Task Force was carried out without its knowledge and requested the immediate withdrawal of task force personnel from the estate.

Court sheriffs on Tuesday successfully handed over Plot 81, Ademola Adetokunbo Crescent, Wuse II, Abuja—the property housing the popular Cubana Lounge—to its rightful owner, Mr. Collins Onwuzulike, after enforcing a court eviction order despite intimidation attempts.

The enforcement team, supported by a detachment of police officers, arrived at the lounge owned by businessman and social media celebrity Obinna Iyiegbu, popularly known as Obi Cubana, around 8 a.m. to execute the court’s directive.

Reports indicate that some individuals, believed to be hired thugs, attempted to block the eviction, attacking the court bailiffs after police officers reportedly disappeared. Nevertheless, the sheriffs remained steadfast, overseeing the removal of industrial generators, air conditioners, and other lounge equipment from the property.

This action follows a July 2025 High Court judgment in Gwagwalada, which confirmed Onwuzulike, proprietor of SEMC Investment Ltd, as the lawful owner of the building. The property was purchased from Rev. Chidiebere Amakaeze for N2 billion, with a Power of Attorney and Deed of Assignment executed from May 1, 2024.

Justice J.A. Aina granted the owner the right of possession and instructed the defendants to vacate immediately. The court also directed the Inspector General of Police and other security agencies to assist in enforcing lawful possession.

Despite a temporary restraining order from the FCT High Court, Bwari, preventing Onwuzulike from taking over the property, Tuesday’s enforcement was executed following the lapse of that order. The key to the building was officially handed over to Onwuzulike’s lawyer, marking the completion of the eviction process.

This injunction will remain in place pending the full hearing and determination of the interlocutory motion.

The Ogun State Government has charged two traditional rulers with land grabbing, vowing to curb illegal land seizures regardless of status.

Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Oluwasina Ogungbade (SAN), said on Tuesday that the Onijoko of Ijoko Ota, Oba Fatai Matanmi, and the Olu of Orile-Igbon, Igbesa, Oba Yusuff Olasunkanmi, are facing charges of “forceful takeover of land and forcible entry contrary to law.”

According to the state, Oba Matanmi allegedly resold land previously bought by a late Madam Irokosu in 1976, and later harassed the complainant who had lawfully purchased it in 2016. “Although this claim was bogus, the complainant paid N5,000,000 to Oba Matanmi to let peace reign, but the Oba continued to harass the complainant,” the statement said, adding that the matter is before HCT/84R/2025: The State v. Oba Fatai Matanmi.

Oba Olasunkanmi is accused of using a judgment against third parties to unlawfully appropriate land more than a kilometre from the judgment area, allegedly displacing legitimate occupants. He is scheduled to be arraigned on Thursday, September 25, 2025.

The government also charged Chief Lekan Agbogun and Chief Akinbowale Beckley for allegedly selling another person’s property in Abeokuta to an overseas buyer without title documents, despite an existing building on the land.

“While these defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty, the state has filed these charges as a further demonstration of its commitment to tackling land grabbing,” Ogungbade said. “No matter the personalities involved, where the facts warrant, the state will resist and redress all land-grabbing actions that come to its notice.”
