The Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) has sealed 11 establishments in Agege and Mushin over repeated environmental violations.

The agency carried out the enforcement exercise on Tuesday. It followed several warnings and abatement notices issued to the affected establishments.

LASEPA said the facilities had enough time to correct the breaches. However, they failed to meet the agency’s requirements.

The enforcement supports the Lagos State Government’s efforts to protect public health. It also aims to promote cleaner and safer communities across the state.

LASEPA Targets Six Establishments in Mushin

LASEPA sealed six establishments in Mushin during the exercise. The agency cited noise pollution, air pollution and failure to follow earlier directives.

Akorohunfayo Central Mosque on Akorohunfayo Street, Fadeyi, Mushin, was sealed over noise pollution.

Holy Temple of Christ on Ayetoro Street, behind NIPCO Filling Station, Mushin, also faced closure over noise pollution.

LASEPA sealed Christ Covenant Gospel Church, Western District, along Ikorodu Road, Fadeyi, Mushin, for the same offence.

Christ Apostolic Church (Oye Iyanu), located at Mushin Road, Church Bus Stop, Itire, also violated noise control requirements.

The agency sealed Biolarique Bakery Academy on Mushin Road for failing to comply with its directives.

Tiles & Marbles on Silver Street, Olorunsogo, Mushin, was also shut over air pollution.

Five Scrap Yards Sealed

LASEPA also sealed five scrap yards in Agege and Mushin.

The agency cited several environmental breaches. These included environmental pollution, failure to follow its directives and lack of evidence of an E-Waste Permit.

The affected businesses include Abubakar Scrap at Pipeline, Ifako-Ijaiye, Agege.

Others are Benjamin Scrap Yard on Ladoje Street, Oko Oba, Agege, and Starlas and Sons Scrap Yard at the same location.

Jamin Scrap Yard at Jungle Bus Stop, Iju Road, Agege, also faced enforcement.

The fifth facility, identified as Scrap Yard, operates on Olu Aina Street, Daleko, Mushin.

LASEPA Warns Businesses and Residents

LASEPA General Manager, Dr Babatunde Ajayi, reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to environmental protection.

Ajayi said LASEPA would continue to monitor activities across Lagos. He added that the agency would enforce environmental rules where businesses or other activities threaten public health.

He urged business owners, religious organisations, facility operators and scrap dealers to follow environmental rules.

He also asked operators to obtain the required permits and approvals before carrying out regulated activities.

Ajayi stressed that environmental compliance requires cooperation from residents and businesses.

Impact on Lagos’ Built Environment

The enforcement also has implications for Lagos’ housing and real estate sectors.

The Ogun State Environmental Protection Agency (OGEPA) has sealed Bonny Pie Industry located in Akinbo Township, Ewekoro Local Government Area, over allegations of environmental pollution through the discharge of untreated wastewater into a river used by residents.

The enforcement action followed a directive from the General Manager of OGEPA, Kehinde Bello, after the agency received a petition from the Olu of Akinbo, Oba Rasheed Olamilekan, alleging that the company was contaminating a major water source serving the community.

According to the petition, the industry had been discharging untreated wastewater into the river, raising concerns about environmental degradation and potential health risks for residents who rely on the water for domestic use.

In response to the complaint, OGEPA’s enforcement team conducted an inspection of the facility to verify the allegations and assess the environmental impact of the reported activities.

Based on preliminary findings, the agency sealed the facility as a precautionary measure to prevent further pollution while a comprehensive investigation is carried out.

The Ogun State Waste Management Authority has sealed the Ijebu-Mushin market in Ijebu East Local Government Area over persistent poor sanitation and indiscriminate waste disposal.

The enforcement action, according to the government, followed repeated warnings to market leaders and traders, which were allegedly ignored.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on OGWAMA, Farook Akintunde, said the closure became necessary to safeguard public health and environmental standards.

He explained that traders in the market consistently failed to patronise the designated Private Sector Participant (PSP) responsible for waste evacuation, opting instead to dump refuse indiscriminately within the market premises.

Akintunde noted that despite government intervention, including mechanical evacuation of accumulated waste and the provision of roll-on roll-off bins, compliance remained poor.

“They refused to use the waste facilities provided and continued unhygienic practices, leaving the government with no choice but to act,” he stated.

The state government emphasized that it would not tolerate actions capable of endangering the health and well-being of residents.

Akintunde warned that unsanitary conditions in markets could lead to contamination of goods and increase the risk of disease outbreaks within the community.

He added that the market would remain closed until traders comply with proper sanitation standards and adopt approved waste disposal methods.

The development adds to previous enforcement actions by the state government, including the temporary closure of Kuto Market in Abeokuta over similar environmental violations.

As Lagos continues to grapple with environmental challenges linked to rapid urbanisation, residents across the state have raised alarm over the city’s deteriorating air quality largely caused by indiscriminate waste burning, vehicle emissions, and poor sanitation practices.

In separate interviews with our source, residents from Ikorodu to Alagbado described how fumes from refuse fires, exhaust pipes, and industrial discharges now hang constantly in the air, posing serious health risks and environmental hazards.

A civil servant in Ikorodu, Mrs Itunu Dada, said that most residents prefer to burn waste instead of engaging licensed waste collectors. “When you go outside, you see smoke everywhere.

It causes cough, chest pain, and irritation. Around the markets, heaps of refuse on road medians emit offensive odours. It’s terrible,” she said.

Dada urged the Lagos State Government to enforce stricter sanitation laws and increase the frequency of waste evacuation.

“Those clearing drains often leave waste piled up for weeks. When it rains, it all washes back into the drainage. We need a task force to stop illegal dumping and burning,” she added.

In Alimosho, Mrs Stella Lawrence, a teacher, said air pollution has become part of daily life. “Many commercial vehicles emit thick black fumes because they’re not roadworthy. Generator use also makes it worse. The government should phase out unfit vehicles and improve power supply to reduce generator dependence,” she said.

Similarly, Miss Chioma Ndukwe, a communications expert in Okota, said the air in densely populated areas like Oshodi has become unbearable.

“Walking through Oshodi Market feels like choking — between exhaust fumes, burning waste, and poor sanitation, breathing clean air is a struggle,” she noted.

Ndukwe called for stricter vehicle emission checks, industrial regulation, and better public sanitation. “Everyone deserves to breathe clean air in Lagos,” she said.

In Lekki, Mr Bruno Ajede, a businessman, said though the area is relatively cleaner, fumes from vehicles remain a major issue.

“Air pollution causes respiratory problems like asthma. It’s a serious public health threat,” he said.

Meanwhile, Mr Ajibola Ajayi, a marketer in Alagbado, said vehicular pollution in his community remains unchecked. “Many cars here emit heavy smoke, yet no one monitors them,” he complained.

Reacting, Mr Friday Oku, President of the Association of Wastepickers of Lagos, linked the problem to Nigeria’s dependence on fossil fuels.

“Our continued reliance on petrol and diesel is harming both health and the environment. We must embrace renewable energy and cleaner alternatives like CNG,” he said.

Oku criticised inconsistent government policies, including the recent ban on “cart pushers,” saying such actions worsen emissions. “Replacing carts with tricycles only adds to pollution. It shows poor policy direction,” he stated.

The Lagos State Government, through the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, said it remains committed to improving air quality under its Blue and Green Economy Initiative and Air Quality Monitoring Network.

The state has also deployed mobile sensors to monitor pollution levels and enforce compliance among industries and transport operators.

However, environmental advocates argue that without stronger law enforcement and public behavioural change, Lagos’ ambition for clean air will remain far from reality.

The Environmental Taskforce in Edo State on Saturday arrested 50 persons in Benin for violating sanitation laws.

The new NSCDC Commandant, Mr. Saidi Akintayo, led the operation across areas including Sapele Road, Ekiosa Market, Siloko Road, and New Benin Market.

Akintayo said the exercise was to enforce compliance with the state’s monthly sanitation directive and promote a clean, healthy environment. He reaffirmed the corps’ commitment to supporting government efforts on environmental hygiene and public health.

The suspects were arraigned before a mobile court at the Egor Local Government Secretariat.

Oredo Council Chairman, Mr. Gabriel Idusere, who joined the exercise, commended residents for their cooperation and assured that measures had been put in place for prompt refuse evacuation.

Environmental experts have called on Nigeria’s policymakers to prioritise the creation of urban green spaces to restore ecological balance and improve public well-being.

Biologist Lucky Atabo, in a statement to The PUNCH, urged authorities to integrate native vegetation and green zones into city planning. His 10-month study of a 50×50m biological garden revealed 42 bird species, over 100 butterflies and moths, and several reptiles thriving within urban areas — proving that cities can sustain rich biodiversity.

Atabo’s research, alongside ecologist Abdulsalam Abdullahi, showed that vegetation and climate conditions strongly influence urban wildlife diversity, suggesting that birds and butterflies can serve as indicators of ecosystem health.

He stressed that green spaces are vital for regulating microclimates, supporting pollination, and enhancing recreation, warning that neglecting them could worsen urban living conditions.

“Urban biodiversity isn’t just about nature; it’s about people,” Atabo said, urging governments to protect and expand green areas for sustainable, liveable Nigerian cities.

Residents of the Natufe/Animashaun Community Development Area in Surulere, Lagos, on Saturday, staged a peaceful protest against the proposed construction of a cemetery in their neighborhood.

The large plot of land earmarked for the project sits along Babs Animashaun Street, bordered by homes, a school, and a church. Holding placards and chanting “No to the cemetery,” the protesters said the development would endanger public health and degrade their environment.

Chairperson of the community, Alhaja Omolabake Braimoh, said residents had earlier resisted similar plans two years ago. “This is a residential area with schools, churches, and families. We depend on borehole water, and the cemetery will contaminate our land and water,” she said.

Braimoh alleged that a government stakeholder meeting held at Eko Club was done without genuine community representation. “They claimed 60% of us agreed to the project, but those who attended were not from our area,” she stated, adding that letters had been sent to the Coker-Aguda LCDA and more would go to relevant state agencies.

Former CDA chairman Olarenwaju Olaniyan also condemned the plan, urging the state to approve projects that promote growth instead of harm. “We’ve lived here for over 50 years. This project will pollute our boreholes and destroy lives. The governor should intervene,” he appealed.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr. Oluyinka Olumide, said during a recent stakeholders’ meeting that the proposed cemetery was designed to address the shortage of burial spaces in Surulere. He explained that the site met planning standards, with features such as CCTV surveillance, street lighting, drainage, and a 20-metre setback from nearby buildings.

Olumide emphasised that inclusive dialogue was key to resolving such disputes, noting that Lagos’ limited land space required “creativity and collaboration” in urban planning.

The Nigerian Senate on Wednesday passed for second reading a bill that seeks to establish dedicated Sickle Cell Disorder Research and Therapy Centres in each of the country’s six geo-political zones, marking a significant step toward strengthening the national response to the disease.

Sponsored by Senator Sunday Marshal Katung (PDP, Kaduna South), the proposed legislation aims to provide a structured and sustainable framework for the diagnosis, treatment, and research of sickle cell anaemia a hereditary blood disorder that affects millions of Nigerians. The condition causes red blood cells to assume a rigid, sickle-like shape, impeding circulation and leading to chronic pain, organ damage, and other life-threatening complications.

Leading debate on the bill, Senator Katung highlighted the urgent need to expand access to specialized care, enhance data-driven research, and offer educational and psychosocial support for individuals and families affected by the condition. He stressed that the centres would also serve as hubs for public awareness campaigns, professional training, and policy development.

“This legislation is designed not just to treat, but to educate, prevent, and ultimately reduce the burden of sickle cell disease across the country,” Katung said.

Several lawmakers voiced strong support for the bill. Senator Tahir Monguno (APC, Borno North) and Senator Victor Umeh (LP, Anambra Central) underscored the importance of widespread genotype testing prior to marriage, while calling for sustained public enlightenment initiatives to curb the disease’s prevalence.

Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, who presided over the session, referred the bill to the Senate Committee on Health (Secondary and Tertiary) for further legislative scrutiny. The committee has been mandated to return its findings within four weeks.

“As we consider this important bill, it is essential that our approach includes both care and prevention,” Jibrin noted. “We must work collectively to support those living with sickle cell disease while also investing in strategies that prevent new cases.”

Nigeria has been ranked as the country with the lowest life expectancy globally, according to new data from the United Nations World Population Prospects. The report places the nation’s average lifespan at 54.9 years, with men expected to live up to 54.3 years and women only marginally higher at 54.9.

The figures position Nigeria at the bottom of the 25 countries with the shortest life expectancy, just below Chad (55.2 years) and South Sudan and the Central African Republic (57.7 years). Twenty-two of these countries are located in sub-Saharan Africa, with Lesotho (57.8), Somalia (59.0), and Mali (60.7) also among the lowest ranked.

Health experts attribute the country’s poor performance to persistently high maternal and infant mortality rates, weak healthcare systems, and limited access to essential medical services, especially in regions plagued by insecurity. The World Health Organisation lists cancers, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, chronic respiratory illnesses, and mental health disorders among the leading causes of death globally.

The Federal Ministry of Health has pledged reforms aimed at expanding universal health coverage and strengthening public health infrastructure. However, progress has been slow, hindered by funding gaps and implementation challenges.

Reacting to the UN data, medical expert Dr. Raymond Kuti questioned the accuracy of the figures, arguing that Nigeria’s life expectancy may be understated. “The criteria they use are often faulty. They just want us to believe that we have a low lifespan,” he said, while urging for more reliable national data to reflect the country’s true health realities.

International organisations continue to call for greater investment in healthcare, nutrition, and sanitation to improve living conditions and raise life expectancy across Africa’s most populous nation.
