The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has predicted mixed weather conditions across Nigeria from Monday to Wednesday, with light dust haze expected in the North and moderate rainfall in parts of the Central and Southern regions.

In its three-day weather outlook released Sunday in Abuja, NiMet also warned of possible flash floods in some southern states and advised residents to stay alert.

Monday
Slight dust haze with good visibility is expected in Borno, Zamfara, Kaduna, Yobe, Jigawa, Kano, and Katsina. Isolated thunderstorms may occur in Taraba and Adamawa, while parts of the FCT, Nasarawa, and Kogi could see light rain. The southern states will experience cloudy skies with chances of thunderstorms later in the day, especially in Rivers, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom.

Tuesday
Dust haze will persist in the North, while Taraba and Adamawa may experience isolated thunderstorms. The Central region will have sunny skies with light rain later in the FCT, Nasarawa, and Kogi. In the South, rainfall will intensify in Rivers, Cross River, Ebonyi, and Akwa Ibom. NiMet warned of flooding risks in parts of Rivers, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom.

Wednesday
The North will remain mostly sunny, though Taraba could see light rain. The Central states, including Kogi and the FCT, will have cloudy skies with isolated thunderstorms, while the South will experience morning clouds followed by moderate rain in Lagos, Ogun, Delta, Rivers, and Akwa Ibom.

NiMet advised motorists to drive carefully during rainfall and urged people with respiratory conditions to limit exposure to dust in the North. Airline operators were also reminded to obtain weather updates for flight planning.

Entire farmlands were submerged, compounding the hardship faced by smallholder farmers who rely heavily on seasonal crops for sustenance and income.

In hard-hit areas such as Gudaba, Kuchiyakwo, and Pegi, residents are counting their losses. Structures built from thatch and bamboo were reduced to rubble, while agricultural lands cultivated with maize, cassava, yams, and vegetables were washed away.

Mr. Hassan, a local farmer affected by the flood, described the situation as devastating. “My first corn field was completely destroyed on Monday, and by Tuesday morning, the remaining plot had been submerged. It’s really frustrating as I am strongly dependent on that farmland for produce,” he said.

The disaster aligns with earlier warnings issued by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), which in its 2025 Seasonal Climate Prediction had projected above-average rainfall across the North Central zone, including the Federal Capital Territory. The agency had cautioned that such rainfall patterns could result in localized flooding, particularly in areas with inadequate drainage systems and unregulated urban development.

With farmlands lost and many informal businesses washed away, the aftermath of the storm leaves urgent questions about climate resilience, urban planning, and the preparedness of rural communities in the FCT to face extreme weather events.

Speaking at a news conference on 2024 seasonal climate predictions and socio-economic implications for Lagos State, Wahab stated that the average annual rainfall predicted for 2024 was greater than the long-term average, with an onset date expected in the first week of April and ceasing in the first week of December.

Wahab outlined the predicted onset and cessation dates for rainfall in different parts of Lagos State, with Ikeja, Badagry, Ikorodu, Lagos Island, and Epe all expected to experience varying amounts of rainfall throughout the year.

He noted that while below-normal rainfall was anticipated in the first half of the rainy season, normal to above-normal rainfall was expected in the second half.

Wahab emphasized the importance of collaboration with the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) on seasonal climate prediction, highlighting its value as a weather and early warning tool for various sectors impacted by annual rainfall.

He assured that the state government was prepared to handle any potential flooding, with plans in place to downscale the seasonal climate prediction to stakeholders and emergency workers in the state. Additionally, the government has deployed and maintained a network of weather stations and river gauge stations to monitor weather and river levels, enhancing preparedness for weather and flood-related issues.

To effectively contain flooding, the government is maintaining a partnership with the Ogun-Osun River Basin Authority and monitoring rainfall from neighboring states, dam releases, and river water levels.

Residents along flood plains of major rivers are urged to be ready to relocate to higher grounds when necessary, and drainage engineers are available in all local government areas to attend to drainage-related matters during and after the rainy season.

The Special Adviser on Environment, Olakunle Rotimi-Akodu, appealed to residents to support the government’s efforts by regularly cleaning drains and avoiding dumping refuse into drainage channels.

The Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has predicted heavy rainfall for Thursday, September 28 and Friday, September 29, 2023 in several States across the country with a possibility of flash floods in some States.

NiMet’s heavy rainfall forecast showed that moderate to heavy rainfall is expected over parts of Katsina, Kano, Jigawa, Bauchi, Gombe, Plateau, Borno, Adamawa, Taraba, Kaduna, Niger, Nasarawa, Kogi, Enugu, Edo, Delta, Bayelsa, Abia, Anambra, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Ebonyi, Kwara, and Benue States, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

It also showed that very light or no rain is expected over the rest of the country, the forecast indicated.

On infrastructure, NiMet also said strong winds are a threat to weak structures, trees and mast, adding that people in affected states should disconnect electrical appliances before and not during the rains.

NiMet cautioned that the expected moderate to heavy rainfall is expected to cause some flash flooding over their areas of occurrence.

The agency also warned that strong winds may accompany the rains with the strongest winds expected over parts of Adamawa, Borno, Gombe, Bauchi, Yobe, Jigawa, Kano, Katsina, Zamfara, Sokoto, and Kebbi States.
