The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Bank for Investment and Development (EBID) has approved $91.6 million in financing for the construction and rehabilitation of 24 strategic road and bridge projects across Bauchi State. Bauchi State Governor Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed announced the approval after signing the financing agreement with EBID. According to the governor, the road and bridge projects are designed to reduce travel time, improve road safety, support agricultural productivity, and encourage commercial activities across the state. President Bola Tinubu has approved 27 road projects valued at more than N3.9 trillion across 15 states as part of the Federal Government’s efforts to improve road infrastructure and enhance connectivity nationwide. The approvals were announced by the Minister of Works, David Umahi, following a meeting of the Federal Executive Council in Abuja.

According to the minister, the projects are spread across Adamawa, Benue, Cross River, Ebonyi, Ekiti, Kogi, Kwara, Lagos, Niger, Ondo, Osun, Oyo, Plateau, Taraba, and Yobe states. The projects include new road constructions, dualisation works, rehabilitation of existing roads, and the construction of bridges and flyovers.

One of the largest approvals is the re-award of the 409-kilometre dual carriageway project in Niger State under the tax credit scheme at a cost of N1.8 trillion. Other major projects include the dualisation of the Ilorin-Ogbomoso Road, reconstruction of the Iseyin-Eruwa-Agbesi Road, rehabilitation of the Ilorin-Omorin-Ebe-Kabba-Obajana Road, and the construction of several strategic roads linking states and economic corridors.

The council also approved projects in Lagos, including the construction of the Pacific Road linking Igbe Laara to Ikorodu, as well as additional projects in Adamawa, Oyo, Kwara, Ebonyi, Plateau, and other states. Furthermore, the Federal Government approved the full business case for the operation and maintenance concession of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway and directed the reconstruction of failed sections along the Ibadan axis using concrete pavement.

Umahi disclosed that the first 118-kilometre section of the Abuja-Kaduna-Kano Highway, valued at N137 billion, has been completed, describing the road projects as part of the administration’s broader infrastructure development agenda aimed at boosting economic activities, improving transportation efficiency, and strengthening regional integration across the country.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu says the Federal Government is executing infrastructure projects on an unprecedented scale, with more than 2,700 kilometres of highways and major roads currently under construction, reconstruction or rehabilitation across Nigeria.

Major Renewed Hope Cities in Abuja, Lagos and Kano are also progressing steadily.

According to the President, the housing programme has generated over 300,000 jobs, largely through construction-related activities, materials supply and associated services.

Energy Sector Investments Expand Refining and Gas Capacity

Tinubu disclosed that the $5 billion Nigeria LNG Train 7 project is nearing completion, with expectations of boosting gas production and export capacity.

He also said ongoing investments in modular and large-scale refineries are reducing Nigeria’s dependence on imported petroleum products and easing pressure on foreign exchange.

On electricity, the President said reforms are being implemented to address legacy debts, expand transmission infrastructure and support renewable energy development.

Nigeria’s Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved infrastructure projects worth over N7 trillion, marking one of the largest single approvals for road construction in the country’s history.

The projects, which cut across all six geopolitical zones, include major highways, bridge reconstructions, and strategic economic corridors aimed at boosting connectivity and national development.

Minister of Works, David Umahi, disclosed the approvals after a council meeting, noting that the projects align with the infrastructure agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Key Projects Approved

Among the headline projects is a N1.86 trillion extension of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway through Akwa Ibom State, described as one of the most technically challenging sections due to swampy terrain.

The council also approved N548.98 billion for the complete demolition and reconstruction of the Carter Bridge in Lagos after structural assessments confirmed severe deterioration.

Another major approval includes a N1.79 trillion section of the Sokoto-Badagry Expressway, a 360-kilometre corridor expected to be partly funded through external financing and operated as a toll road.

Reviving Abandoned and Delayed Projects

Umahi revealed that the government has restructured several inherited projects that failed to deliver results.

One such project is the Suleja-Minna road, previously handled under a tax credit scheme but stalled for years. The project has now been split into two contracts worth N91 billion and N93 billion, respectively.

The reconstruction of the Mando-Birnin Gwari road in Kaduna State, valued at N178.12 billion, was also approved, fulfilling a campaign promise tied to improving northern connectivity.

Why Carter Bridge Must Be Rebuilt

The Minister explained that multiple engineering investigations carried out over the years confirmed that the Carter Bridge had reached a critical structural stage.

He noted that underwater components had deteriorated significantly, making rehabilitation impossible.

The new design will expand the bridge from 1.525 kilometres to 1.93 kilometres, including additional flyover ramps to reduce traffic congestion.

Strategic Economic Impact

The government says the projects are designed to stimulate economic growth, improve logistics efficiency, and create jobs nationwide.

According to Umahi, the cost of the Sokoto-Badagry Expressway—estimated at N3.2 billion per kilometre—compares favourably with previous projects like the Abuja-Kano highway.

He also disclosed that the project attracted strong international investor interest, with financing offers exceeding expectations.

In the South-South region, a Bodo-Bonny road extension valued at N151 billion was also approved to improve access to key oil and gas infrastructure.

Umahi further revealed that several completed projects will be commissioned ahead of Tinubu’s third anniversary in office.

These include sections of the Lagos-Calabar Highway, the Abuja-Kaduna road corridor, and multiple bridge and expressway upgrades nationwide.

The Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, has ordered the immediate issuance of a 14-day termination notice to the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) for allegedly executing substandard work that has led to the near-collapse of the Port Harcourt–Aba Road.

Umahi gave the directive during an inspection of federal road projects in Rivers State, expressing deep frustration over the deteriorating state of the 43-kilometre dual carriageway.

He accused CCECC of ignoring engineering specifications despite repeated warnings from the ministry, describing the road’s condition as “a national embarrassment.”

“We are at the Port Harcourt-bound Aba route being constructed by CCECC, which is on the verge of total collapse,” Umahi said. “This project was inherited, and since we came on board, we’ve been injecting funds to complete one carriageway.”

The minister explained that the ministry had earlier agreed with CCECC to use concrete on the shoulders and asphalt on the main carriageway for improved durability. However, the company allegedly violated this agreement by laying binder courses over long stretches without finishing the shoulders or applying the final wear coat, a shortcut that has already resulted in failures on sections completed two years ago.

After issuing over 20 official warnings, Umahi announced that the ministry would de-scope the Port Harcourt-bound section from CCECC’s contract and hand it over to competent indigenous contractors.

He warned that CCECC must either correct the defects at its own cost or risk having all its ongoing projects across Nigeria suspended.

“I will direct the ministry to engage qualified indigenous contractors for the Port Harcourt-bound lane,” Umahi stated. “If CCECC fails to mill out and replace the defective binder, we will terminate all their contracts nationwide.”

Umahi also revealed plans to publish all correspondences with CCECC to ensure transparency and safeguard public funds, adding that the government will not condone any act that undermines President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s infrastructure renewal drive.

He directed the Federal Controller of Works in Rivers State to issue the formal termination notice, along with documented warnings, to CCECC’s head office before Wednesday.
