The investment is expected to improve transportation infrastructure, strengthen regional connectivity, and stimulate economic growth in the state.

Bauchi State Governor Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed announced the approval after signing the financing agreement with EBID. He described the facility as a significant milestone in the state’s infrastructure development agenda, noting that the projects will enhance mobility, facilitate the movement of goods and services, and improve access to rural and urban communities.

According to the governor, the road and bridge projects are designed to reduce travel time, improve road safety, support agricultural productivity, and encourage commercial activities across the state. He added that better transport infrastructure would attract private investment, create employment opportunities, and improve access to markets, healthcare, and education.

The projects form part of Bauchi State’s broader urban renewal and infrastructure development programme, which seeks to modernise the state’s transport network while supporting inclusive economic development. Authorities believe the improved road infrastructure will also strengthen links between communities and neighbouring states, boosting regional trade and economic integration.

Infrastructure experts have consistently maintained that sustained investment in roads and bridges is essential for reducing logistics costs, increasing productivity, and improving the overall ease of doing business. They note that efficient transport networks play a critical role in attracting investment and supporting long-term economic development.

Construction of the projects is expected to commence following the completion of procurement and other implementation processes, with the state government pledging to ensure transparency, quality execution, and timely delivery

The leadership of the House Committee on Works and Infrastructure warned that the habit of channelling household waste into public drains significantly shortens the lifespan of roads across the state, creating preventable safety risks and heavy financial burdens for taxpayers.

State officials pointed out that several property developers and residential owners willfully bypass building regulations by failing to install functional soakaways. Instead, many properties directly connect their wastewater outlets to roadside gutters, a development that accelerates structural erosion and pollutes local environments. This warning coincides with an intensified environmental sanitation crackdown spearheaded by state authorities aimed at tackling flooding, gully erosion, and severe public health threats.

The approvals were announced by the Minister of Works, David Umahi, following a meeting of the Federal Executive Council in Abuja.

According to the minister, the projects are spread across Adamawa, Benue, Cross River, Ebonyi, Ekiti, Kogi, Kwara, Lagos, Niger, Ondo, Osun, Oyo, Plateau, Taraba, and Yobe states. The projects include new road constructions, dualisation works, rehabilitation of existing roads, and the construction of bridges and flyovers.

One of the largest approvals is the re-award of the 409-kilometre dual carriageway project in Niger State under the tax credit scheme at a cost of N1.8 trillion. Other major projects include the dualisation of the Ilorin-Ogbomoso Road, reconstruction of the Iseyin-Eruwa-Agbesi Road, rehabilitation of the Ilorin-Omorin-Ebe-Kabba-Obajana Road, and the construction of several strategic roads linking states and economic corridors.

The council also approved projects in Lagos, including the construction of the Pacific Road linking Igbe Laara to Ikorodu, as well as additional projects in Adamawa, Oyo, Kwara, Ebonyi, Plateau, and other states. Furthermore, the Federal Government approved the full business case for the operation and maintenance concession of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway and directed the reconstruction of failed sections along the Ibadan axis using concrete pavement.

Umahi disclosed that the first 118-kilometre section of the Abuja-Kaduna-Kano Highway, valued at N137 billion, has been completed, describing the road projects as part of the administration’s broader infrastructure development agenda aimed at boosting economic activities, improving transportation efficiency, and strengthening regional integration across the country.

Residents, pedestrians, and motorists in parts of Oshodi-Isolo have raised urgent concerns over the deteriorating condition of the Oke-Afa Mass Burial Bridge, warning that continued neglect could lead to a potential collapse.

The affected bridge, located around Jakande Gate Bus Stop along the Ikotun–Iyana Ejigbo–Cele corridor, serves as a critical link connecting several densely populated communities, including Isolo, Egbe, Ikotun, Idimu, and Ijegun.

Commuters say the structure has become increasingly unsafe, with visible damage worsening traffic congestion and disrupting daily activities in the area.

During a visit to the axis, it was observed that motorists spend hours navigating the damaged stretch, particularly between Jakande Gate and the Cele Expressway, where the road condition has significantly declined.

A trader, Chioma Cynthia, described the situation as frustrating, noting that a journey that should typically last under an hour now stretches to two or three hours due to persistent gridlock.

She, however, acknowledged the efforts of officials from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, who she said have been managing traffic flow despite the difficult conditions.

Another resident, Oluyinka Onigbinde, said the poor state of the road has imposed heavy financial burdens on motorists, citing frequent vehicle damage and rising maintenance costs.

According to him, many residents now spend significant amounts repairing components such as ball joints and control arms, describing the situation as both frustrating and economically draining.

He added that the issue has lingered for over three years, with little visible progress on repairs.

Similarly, a resident identified as Stev Akpota warned that sections of the road have already collapsed, increasing the risk of accidents, including cases of trucks losing control and containers falling off.

Residents insist that the bridge, which was last rehabilitated about two decades ago, now requires urgent structural intervention to prevent a possible disaster.

They called on the Lagos State Government to act swiftly by commencing rehabilitation work and implementing lasting solutions to restore safety and ease traffic flow.

The growing concerns highlight the broader infrastructure challenges facing rapidly expanding urban centres, where aging road networks struggle to keep up with increasing population and traffic demands.
