Wike made the announcement during the commissioning of the newly completed loops of the Greater Abuja Water Project, a major infrastructure development aimed at enhancing water supply beyond the city center.

He credited President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for prioritizing inclusive development, noting that a key agreement signed during the President’s 2024 visit to China with the China Geo-Engineering Corporation (CGC) is already being implemented.

“This is a promise fulfilled,” Wike said. “During our visit to China with Mr. President, a crucial agreement was signed to bring clean water to rural communities across the FCT. That promise is now becoming a reality.”

According to the minister, procurement processes for the rural water projects are nearing completion. The next phase will involve expanding water access to underserved satellite towns, including Bwari, Kubwa, Karu, and others.

“These projects are not just focused on Abuja’s urban core. They are about equitable development—bringing essential services to every resident, no matter where they live,” he said.

Wike emphasized that the current administration is committed to timely delivery. Unlike the central water project, which took more than eight years to complete, he pledged that the new satellite town projects would be ready in a much shorter timeframe.

“Our goal is clear: by the third anniversary of this administration, we expect to commission these water facilities across FCT’s satellite communities,” the minister stated.

The expansion of water infrastructure is part of a broader agenda to improve quality of life in peri-urban and rural areas of Abuja, ensuring that residents have access to clean, reliable, and safe drinking water.

Wike gave the assurance on Saturday during an inspection of ongoing infrastructure projects in Bwari Area Council, including the dualisation of the Ushafa–War College–Checkpoint Road.

“We are not focused solely on the city centre,” Wike said during the inspection. “President Tinubu’s administration is equally committed to addressing the needs of satellite communities.”

The minister noted that similar inspection tours had recently been conducted in Gwagwalada and Kwali Area Councils, where major road and infrastructure works are ongoing. He also highlighted the dualisation of the Kuje–Gwagwalada Road as another example of the government’s balanced development approach.

“These projects demonstrate clearly that satellite towns are not being left behind. They are integral to our broader development vision for the FCT,” Wike added.

The minister’s comments come amid broader efforts to reduce infrastructure gaps and improve connectivity between Abuja’s city centre and its surrounding towns.

The announcement was made by Abdulkadir Zulkiflu, Coordinator of the FCTA’s Satellite Towns Development Department, during a press briefing in Abuja following the first executive committee meeting of 2025.

According to Zulkiflu, the approved funds will be allocated to a range of key projects aimed at improving sports, judicial infrastructure, power supply, and urban security. A significant portion, ₦19.6 billion, has been designated for the construction of multi-event sports centers designed to promote athletic development and community engagement. The contracts for these centers have been split into two major lots: Lot A, located in Area 3 and Area 10 of Garki District, awarded to Earthgain Energy and Environmental Services Ltd at a cost of ₦9.9 billion, and Lot B, situated in Kafe District behind Life Camp, awarded to Tegwa-Tegwa Nigeria Ltd for ₦9.7 billion. Both projects are scheduled for completion within 12 months.

In addition to sports facilities, the FCTA has allocated ₦13.9 billion for the construction of two magistrate courts, part of a broader effort to improve access to justice in the capital territory. The courts will be established in Asokoro and Garki Districts, with costs of ₦7.6 billion and ₦6.3 billion respectively. The Asokoro court is expected to be completed within 15 months, while the Garki court has an 18-month completion timeline. These new judicial infrastructures aim to ease legal processes and enhance the efficiency of the justice system in Abuja.

Addressing the critical issue of power supply and urban lighting, the FCTA has also approved ₦3 billion for the procurement and installation of a 33kV power supply system to serve communities from Dawaki to Bwari. This funding will also support the installation of solar-powered streetlights along Arab Road and U-Shape Road in these areas. The contract for this project has been awarded to CGC Nigeria Ltd, with a projected completion period of six months. This initiative is expected to significantly improve security and public safety in the satellite towns by enhancing street illumination.

Zulkiflu emphasized that these projects reflect the FCTA’s commitment to creating a modern, secure, and vibrant environment for residents. By focusing on infrastructure development, the administration aims to foster economic growth, improve the quality of life, and attract further investments into the Federal Capital Territory and its surrounding areas. As work progresses, the FCTA assures the public of strict adherence to timelines and quality standards to ensure the successful delivery of these transformative projects.

Speaking to State House correspondents after the FEC meeting, Wike emphasized the importance of these developments as part of the “Renewed Hope Agenda.”

According to Wike, these towns, which include Kwali, Gwagwalada, and Bwari area councils, have long been neglected by previous administrations. “Before December, we will commission over 75 kilometers of road in these areas,” the minister said, underscoring the federal government’s commitment to improving infrastructure and extending development to satellite towns.

The FEC also approved the development of Artillery Road N5 and Obafemi Awolowo Way, from Life Camp Junction to Ring Road. The project, aimed at decongesting the area, will be handled by Julius Berger and is expected to be completed within 16-17 months.

In addition to road projects, the President has directed the construction of 40 new judges and justices’ quarters in the Kantampe District, with completion expected within 15 months. These new quarters will house members of the FCT High Courts, Federal High Court, and the Court of Appeal.

Furthermore, FEC ratified the termination of a previous contract for the development of Maitama 2, an area allocated to more than 1,700 allottees. The contract, originally awarded for N184 billion, saw no work commence due to lack of mobilisation. The government will quickly restart the procurement process and ensure the area’s development.

These projects are part of President Tinubu’s broader infrastructure plans to reduce housing deficits and bring development to underserved areas of the FCT.
