Omar Touray, President of the ECOWAS Commission, announced the decision on Tuesday during the 55th session of the Mediation and Security Council in Abuja.

The emergency declaration comes after a string of destabilizing events, including last month’s takeover in Guinea-Bissau, where soldiers seized government control and suspended the electoral process just days after a presidential election.

On Sunday, another group of soldiers announced they had taken control of government in the Benin Republic. The situation prompted Nigeria to deploy the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) to help restore constitutional order — a move the Presidency said was made at the official request of the Beninese government.

Touray warned that recent developments show the region faces a “critical threat” to democratic stability.

“Faced with this situation, it is safe to declare that our community is in a state of emergency,” he said.

His remarks underline a growing concern within the bloc that elections — once symbols of democratic progress — have now become a major trigger for instability.

Touray added that ECOWAS must urgently strengthen security cooperation, especially with the breakaway Alliance of Sahel States (AES), after the group accused Nigeria of violating its airspace during the Benin intervention and threatened to “neutralise” intruders.

He urged member states to unite and pool resources against rising threats of terrorism, banditry, and political unrest spreading across borders.

The declaration marks one of ECOWAS’ strongest responses yet as the bloc confronts escalating tensions and geopolitical pressure across West Africa.

The Southern Solidarity Alliance, a civil society organization, has raised concerns about the worsening state of federal roads in southern Nigeria, urging President Bola Tinubu to declare a state of emergency to address the critical situation.

In a letter titled “President, please declare a state of emergency on the deplorable and decrepit federal roads in southern Nigeria: an SOS,” the group’s National Coordinator, Ndubuisi Okafor, highlighted several key roads in dire need of reconstruction. Among them are Ipele-Isua, Benin-Auchi, Nsukka-Enugu, Sagamu-Ore, Ore-Benin, Benin-Asaba, Onitsha-Owerri-Aba, Enugu-Port Harcourt, Uyo-Calabar, East-West Road, and Ibadan-Iwo-Oshogbo Road.

Click Here To Become A Member Of Housing Development Advocacy Network (HDAN)

The group emphasized that years of neglect have left these roads in disrepair, posing significant dangers to motorists and impeding regional connectivity.

“The condition of these roads has led to pain, suffering, and death for many Nigerians. Some sections have sunk as much as nine feet into the ground, turning them into death traps and hotspots for criminal activities, including kidnappings,” the letter read.

The group expressed frustration over the socio-economic impact of the deteriorating infrastructure, describing it as a hindrance to the economy and a threat to public safety.

“This neglect is heartbreaking. Many lives have been lost, and countless others permanently disabled due to accidents on these roads,” Okafor stated.

The alliance urged the Presidency to prioritize the reconstruction of these roads to improve safety, foster regional economic activities, and restore public confidence in the government’s commitment to infrastructure development.
