President Bola Tinubu has approved a two-year extension for the Surveyor-General of the Federation, Abdulganiyu Adebomehin, effective January 5, 2026.

The decision, announced by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, aims to consolidate ongoing reforms in Nigeria’s geospatial and land data systems following the recent transfer of the Office of the Surveyor-General of the Federation (OSGOF) to the Presidency.

Tinubu’s approval underscores his commitment to modernising land administration and expanding the use of geospatial data for economic growth, infrastructure planning, and environmental management.

Appointed in January 2022 by former President Muhammadu Buhari, Adebomehin has led key initiatives such as the digitisation of land records, national mapping, and geospatial support for highways, erosion control, and reclamation projects.

Onanuga said the extended tenure would allow Adebomehin to complete these reforms and strengthen collaboration between federal and state agencies, minimise land disputes, and improve efficiency in land management.

Under his leadership, OSGOF has also advanced digital mapping efforts vital to projects like the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road.

In August, Adebomehin ordered the demolition of illegal structures along Nigeria’s shorelines and directed the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) to submit all shoreline approvals to OSGOF for central coordination.

The Surveyor-General of the Federation, Abudulganiyu Adebomehin, has announced a crackdown on illegal shoreline structures in Nigeria. All such buildings will be demolished.

In a statement issued by the Head of Information and Public Relations, Henry David, Adebomehin explained that the Office of the Surveyor-General of the Federation (OSGOF) now operates under the Presidency. He said this move gives the office more powers and responsibilities in managing Nigeria’s shoreline areas.

The Surveyor-General directed that all applications for Certificates of Occupancy, permits, and survey plans along shorelines be suspended. “These requests will remain on hold until they are reviewed and approved by OSGOF,” he said.

He also ordered the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) to submit all past shoreline-related approvals to his office. In addition, he warned that any documents already submitted to other agencies must now be redirected to OSGOF.

Adebomehin criticized some state governments for allocating shoreline land without OSGOF’s involvement. He stressed that such actions go against the law. “The enforcement unit will demolish any illegal structure within the shoreline right of way. This is an executive order. It complies with the Law of the Sea,” he stated. He also emphasized that OSGOF holds the official maps required for shoreline management.

The Surveyor-General praised the Nigerian Institution of Surveyors (NIS) and the Association of Private Practising Surveyors of Nigeria (APPSN) for supporting the profession. He assured them of continuous collaboration.

During the visit, NIS Surveyor-General Folakemi Odunewu congratulated Adebomehin on OSGOF’s transition to the Presidency. She presented the institution’s seven-point agenda, which includes digital transformation of the National Secretariat, stronger public relations and advocacy, broader engagement with stakeholders, review of the Survey Coordination Act, development of professional excellence structures, and advocacy for a dedicated Ministry of Surveying and Geoinformatics.

Speaking at a conference titled “The Future of Work: Adapting to Changes in the Geospatial Ecosystem and the Public Service” in Abuja, Adebomehin emphasized the critical role that their work plays in the service delivery of the federal civil service.

He called on the surveyors to fully utilize available budgetary allocations to revamp zonal headquarters and field offices, and to pursue higher education, including PhDs, to remain relevant in their field. Adebomehin acknowledged the challenges facing the sector, such as inadequate office spaces, poor furniture, lack of operational vehicles, and absence of alternative power sources and solar equipment.

The Surveyor General highlighted the importance of adapting to changes in the geospatial ecosystem, encouraging the conference attendees to discuss policies that would enhance their fieldwork and promote a technologically advanced environment.

Onyekwere Nwogu, Director of Infrastructure Surveys, pointed out that maintaining high productivity in remote locations, acquiring new tools, and adopting the right strategies were the sector’s main challenges.

Oluwasegun Falana, in his presentation, stressed the need for professionals to leverage technology for improved productivity. He explained how technology has facilitated collaboration, service delivery, and workflow optimization, reducing manual tasks.

Surveyor James Olowoofoyeku called for active participation in the reform process, stating that changes within the Federal Civil Service would enhance productivity, improve service delivery, and drive progress.

The Surveyor General of the Federation, Abuduganiyu Adebomehin, has strongly refuted recent media reports claiming that his office sold plots of land worth N16 billion in Lagos State.

Addressing the issue in Abuja, Adebomehin clarified that the false claims, which had previously circulated in 2022, resurfaced this year in an apparent attempt to tarnish his reputation and discredit the office. He emphasized that in 2023, the matter was taken to court, and following a thorough investigation, his office was exonerated.

Adebomehin explained that the Surveyor General’s office has no authority to sell government land, pointing out that the Presidential Committee and the Land Use Allocation Committee are responsible for such matters. “We have no right or authority to offer government property for sale. The Land Use Allocation Committee oversees this,” he stated.

Despite overseeing the largest land matters in the country, Adebomehin mentioned that his office is dealing with encroachment issues on federal land in several states, including Kwara, Imo, and Kano. He reiterated that his office does not sell government land, as it does not fall within its mandate.

He also highlighted the advancements made by the Office of the Surveyor General of the Federation (OSGoF) in geospatial data and technology. This includes ongoing staff training and capacity-building efforts in data management.

Adebomehin also expressed regret that the OSGoF was not involved in the Green Wall program, a project designed to combat desertification. He recalled that years ago, his office offered advice regarding the Chad Basin area, which was not taken seriously at the time, leading to significant losses for families in the region due to environmental degradation.

The investigation into the land sale allegations is still ongoing, and Adebomehin assured that his office will continue to cooperate fully to clear any doubts regarding the matter.
