A devastating fire has completely gutted Magistrate Court 1 in Ikom Local Government Area, Cross River State, destroying vital legal records, exhibits, and ongoing case files.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Thursday, April 23, 2026, around 3:00 a.m., before firefighters were able to contain the blaze.

Court Building Completely Destroyed

Eyewitnesses described the scene as total destruction, with the entire facility reduced to ashes and debris.

One resident said nothing could be salvaged from the building after the fire was extinguished.

The destruction has effectively left Ikom without a functioning magistrate court, raising concerns over access to justice and potential delays in ongoing legal proceedings.

Police Suspect Arson, Launch Investigation

The Cross River State Police Command confirmed the incident and stated that the fire is being treated as a suspected arson case.

Police spokesperson, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, said officers of the Nigeria Police Force, alongside fire service personnel, responded quickly to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby structures.

According to him, no lives were lost in the incident, although the court building was completely destroyed.

He added that the Commissioner of Police has ordered a full and discreet investigation to determine the cause of the fire and identify those responsible.

Concerns Over Justice System Disruption

Legal observers have raised concerns that the destruction of court records could lead to delays in trials, retrials, or possible miscarriages of justice due to lost case files.

The incident also highlights ongoing infrastructure vulnerabilities in judicial institutions across parts of the country.

Authorities are expected to begin an assessment of lost records and temporary arrangements for court proceedings in the area.
