The Federal Government has taken a fresh step to address Nigeria’s persistent electricity challenges with the inauguration of a Gas-to-Power Monitoring Committee aimed at resolving gas supply disruptions crippling power generation.

Speaking at the inauguration, Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, described the move as a strategic intervention to tackle one of the most critical bottlenecks in the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry.

The initiative follows a sharp drop in electricity generation earlier this year after gas suppliers cut supply to power generation companies over a debt estimated at more than $1.3 billion, exposing the fragile link between gas availability and electricity output.

Adelabu noted that gas-fired plants account for about 80 percent of Nigeria’s electricity generation, making consistent gas supply essential for stabilising the national grid. However, the sector continues to face disruptions caused by pipeline vandalism, infrastructure gaps, liquidity constraints, and weak coordination among stakeholders.

According to the minister, the newly inaugurated committee is expected to provide targeted solutions to these longstanding challenges by monitoring supply chains and driving the resolution of operational and commercial bottlenecks.

He explained that the committee emerged from deliberations at the first quarter 2026 Ministerial Power Sector Working Group meeting, where stakeholders identified key issues affecting the gas-to-power value chain.

Among its core responsibilities, the committee will oversee the repair and maintenance of damaged gas pipelines, facilitate the settlement of outstanding debts owed to gas suppliers, and address pricing and supply inconsistencies affecting generation companies.

Adelabu emphasised that the committee must move beyond routine oversight and adopt a proactive, data-driven approach to ensure sustainable improvements in electricity generation. He added that members would be held accountable through measurable targets, regular reporting, and timely escalation of critical issues requiring government intervention.

The minister expressed confidence in the committee’s capacity, noting that its membership reflects broad representation across the sector, including the Transmission Company of Nigeria, Nigerian Independent System Operator, the Niger Delta Power Holding Company, the Nigerian Gas Association, and generation companies.

Earlier, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Power, Mahmuda Mamman, represented by the Director of Distribution, said the move aligns with ongoing efforts to urgently address the structural constraints limiting gas supply to power plants.

He identified infrastructure deficits, pipeline vandalism, liquidity challenges, and coordination gaps as major factors undermining electricity generation and slowing economic growth.

Industry observers say the success of the committee will be critical to improving Nigeria’s power output, as resolving gas supply issues remains central to achieving stable and reliable electricity nationwide.

The Transmission Company of Nigeria has announced a planned maintenance exercise that will result in a temporary power outage across parts of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

In a statement issued on Saturday, TCN said the maintenance would be carried out at the Apo 132/33kV Transmission Substation. The exercise is scheduled to take place on Saturday, January 24, 2026, between 9:00 am and 4:00 pm.

According to the company, the planned work will involve maintenance on the 60MVA 132/33kV transformer (3APH TR1) and its associated switchgear at the facility.

TCN explained that during the maintenance period, the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company will be unable to receive bulk power supply for onward distribution to customers in several areas. The affected locations include Gudu District, Gaduwa, Durumi, the Printing and Minting axis, Garki, and surrounding communities.

The company assured electricity consumers that power supply would be restored immediately after the completion of the maintenance work.

TCN also apologised for the inconvenience the outage may cause residents and businesses in the affected areas, urging consumers to make adequate arrangements ahead of the scheduled disruption.

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has confirmed the vandalism of its Tower T347 along the Gombe–Damaturu 330kV transmission line, which occurred on Friday evening.

TCN spokesperson Ndidi Mbah said the tower’s legs were cut off, causing it to collapse partially and disrupt bulk power supply to Maiduguri, Damaturu, and nearby areas.

She noted that supply is being sustained through the Maiduguri Emergency Power Plant, which currently feeds the Yola Electricity Distribution Company for onward distribution.

According to her, engineers are already working to replace the damaged tower and restore normal transmission.

Mbah condemned the act and urged Nigerians to protect power infrastructure and report suspicious activity to security agencies or the nearest TCN office.

The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) has cancelled the 10-day power outage earlier scheduled to affect parts of Enugu State.

In a statement on Thursday, EEDC’s Head of Corporate Communications, Emeka Ezeh, said the outage, initially set to run from Wednesday, October 22 to Friday, October 31, 2025, between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. daily, was suspended due to unforeseen technical constraints.

He explained that the decision followed communication from the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN).

The planned outage, announced earlier by MEDL, was to affect several 33KV feeders in Enugu metropolis on a rotational basis, including Kingsway Lines 1 and 2, Emene Industrial Lines 1 and 2, Thinkers Corner, Trans-Ekulu, Ugwuogo, and Ituku Ozalla.

Ezeh added that a new schedule for the maintenance exercise would be communicated once confirmed and apologized to customers for any inconvenience caused by the change.

MainPower Electricity Distribution Limited (MEDL) has announced a planned power outage across Enugu metropolis from Tuesday, October 22, to Thursday, October 31, 2025. The daily interruptions will occur between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., according to a statement issued by Mr. Emeka Ezeh, Head of Corporate Communications, on Monday.

The outage, reported by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), is part of ongoing rehabilitation and reinforcement projects by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) at its New Haven Station. The exercise will be carried out in segments, with different power lines affected on specific days to allow for systematic maintenance and upgrades.

Ezeh explained that the effort aims to improve power reliability, safety, and quality across the city. MainPower urged residents and businesses to plan ahead and make alternative arrangements during the maintenance period.

The Senate has strongly criticized Nigeria’s electricity operators, generating Companies (GenCos), the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), and Distribution Companies (DisCos) over their failure to improve power supply, accusing them of adding no value since the privatisation of the sector in 2013.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio, speaking during plenary on Thursday, described the power sector’s privatisation as a “total failure” and hinted at possible legislative action to reverse the policy.

“Why do state governors and communities buy transformers, hand them over to DisCos, and still pay for installation? The people who took over the power sector are just making money without adding value at all,” Akpabio said.

He also questioned why the TCN struggles to transmit generated power and why DisCos have failed to invest in critical infrastructure, leaving Nigerians to shoulder the burden.

A report presented by the Senate’s Committee on Power, led by Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, revealed that frequent grid collapses cost the nation approximately $25 million (N42 billion) per incident. The report blamed these failures on factors such as ageing infrastructure, abandoned projects, regulatory gaps, vandalism of power facilities, and poor financial accountability.

The Senate resolved to defer adopting the report and instead directed the committee to conduct a more comprehensive investigation into the sector, including the possibility of reversing privatisation and declaring a state of emergency in the power sector.

Former Edo State Governor, Senator Adams Oshiomhole, described the privatisation policy as exploitative, lamenting that Nigerians are forced to pay for services not rendered. He shared a personal experience of procuring a transformer for his property, only for it to become the property of the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC).

“We must revisit this ill-advised privatisation and advise the President to review the power sector policy in line with his Renewed Hope Agenda,” Oshiomhole said.

Senator Abdul Ningi added that accountability was critical to solving the power sector’s challenges, emphasizing the need for sanctions against those responsible for its failures.

The Senate granted the committee an additional six weeks to conduct its investigation and present actionable recommendations, signaling a renewed commitment to addressing Nigeria’s persistent power supply issues.

The collapse occurred after vandals destroyed 120 TCN transmission facilities in Ahoada and Igbogene in early August, causing a major blackout in Bayelsa.

Engr. Olugbenga Ajiboye, Director General of the Transmission Service Provider (TSP), a subsidiary of TCN, gave this assurance during a courtesy visit to the state’s deputy governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, at the Government House in Yenagoa.

Ajiboye, speaking on behalf of TCN, apologized for the extended power outage and its economic impact, while requesting the state government’s support to accelerate the restoration process.

He explained that the outage was caused by the damage to the transmission line connecting Bayelsa, with 18 transmission towers vandalized. Ajiboye further noted that this year alone, 120 TCN transmission facilities had been vandalized nationwide, urging the Bayelsa State government to provide additional security for their infrastructure.

In response, Deputy Governor Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo acknowledged the severity of the power crisis in Bayelsa, stressing that the lack of reliable public electricity had become a pressing issue in the state.

In the suspension order, numbered TCN/ISO/MO/2024/002, TCN stated that AEDC failed to provide an adequate bank guarantee, which contravenes power market rules.

“This is a formal suspension notice to Abuja Electricity Distribution Company due to non-compliance with provisions of the market rules and failure to provide the Market Operator with an adequate bank guarantee in line with section 15.3.3 of the Market Rules,” TCN stated.

The incident which happened at 11:32 pm on Monday had led to reduced bulk power supply flexibility and the volume of power into Abuja by 250MW.

The TCN Spokesperson, Mrs Ndidi Mba who made the disclosure in a statement on Wednesday said its Operators had conducted a trial reclosure but which failed.

“The TCN lines and patrol team discovered that the four (4) tower footings of Tower 70 were vandalised, destroying the tower legs and causing the tower to stand on the ground, supported by conductors,” the statement partly reads.

However, it said:” TCN has mobilized to the site of the incident and has commenced an emergency repair of the damaged tower and its associated equipment.”

To this end, the company reiterated the need for vigilance in the fight against vandalism of power equipment.

“It is important that we report suspicious movements around all power equipment to security operatives or to the nearest TCN offices nationwide,” it added.
