Speaking at a sensitisation forum in Abuja, NiMet’s Director-General, Professor Charles Anosike, urged Nigerians to brace for the adverse effects of climate variability driven by climate change. He emphasized that the agency’s forecasts show an increased risk of weather-related disasters in the coming days.

“The potential impacts include the destruction of property, forced migration of communities, and even fatalities,” Anosike stated. “While accurate forecasting is critical, our ability to effectively communicate this information to the public is equally essential.”

Anosike highlighted the media’s critical role in relaying scientific information to the public, noting that their reports shape disaster response, agricultural planning, and aviation safety. He also reaffirmed NiMet’s commitment to aligning its operations with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda by investing in staff training and improving public service delivery.

In a related development, NiMet’s Director of Weather Forecasting Services, Professor Vincent Weli, disclosed that the agency has partnered with telecom provider MTN to deliver weather updates directly to mobile phone users.

“Through this partnership, Nigerians will soon begin receiving real-time weather alerts on their phones in accessible local languages,” Weli said, adding that the project is 70 percent complete and will be expanded to other networks.

The agency called for public vigilance and greater media collaboration to ensure that citizens are informed, prepared, and resilient against looming weather threats.

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a fresh alert warning of heavy rainfall this week. According to its latest bulletin, the affected states include Taraba, Bayelsa, Rivers, Delta, Abia, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, and southern parts of Adamawa.

NiMet linked this forecast to increased moisture levels and specific weather patterns like the Madden-Julian Oscillation. Although the MJO remains weak over West Africa, it could still trigger significant rainfall in these regions.

Other States to Expect Moderate to Heavy Rainfall

NiMet also expects parts of Kaduna, Plateau, Nasarawa, Kwara, Benue, Anambra, Imo, Ebonyi, Osun, Oyo, Ogun, Lagos, Ekiti, Ondo, and Edo to receive moderate to heavy rain. These areas should prepare for flooding, especially in zones with poor drainage.

Northern and northeastern states, such as Bauchi, Sokoto, Zamfara, Kano, Katsina, Yobe, Borno, Jigawa, Gombe, and Kebbi, are likely to see light to moderate showers.

Flash Floods Could Disrupt Transport and Damage Property

NiMet warned that the rain may cause flash floods in many parts of the country. Roads, bridges, and low-lying areas face the highest risk. The agency urged people to stay off flooded roads and avoid walking through fast-moving water.

Citizens and Authorities Advised to Take Action

To minimize damage, NiMet advised residents to clear gutters and drainage systems before the rain starts. It also encouraged local authorities and emergency responders to stay alert and prepare for quick response if needed.

The SCP, themed ‘The Role of Early Warnings towards a Climate Resilient Aviation Industry for Sustainable Socio-Economic Development,’ highlights the importance of timely weather insights for national planning.

The 2025 Seasonal Climate Prediction (SCP), unveiled in Abuja on Tuesday, 4th February, highlights the importance of proactive climate planning. Early rainfall onset is expected in Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, and parts of Oyo, Ogun, Osun, Ondo, Lagos, Edo, Enugu, Imo, and Ebonyi States. Meanwhile, northern and central states like Plateau, Kaduna, Niger, Benue, Nasarawa, Taraba, Adamawa, and Kwara will experience delayed rainfall onset, while the rest of the country will see normal onset patterns.

Additionally, the end-of-rainy season forecast shows early cessation in Zamfara, Katsina, Kano, Kaduna, Jigawa, Plateau, Bauchi, Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, Taraba, Niger, Kwara, Kogi, FCT, Ekiti, and Ondo states. Conversely, delayed cessation is predicted for parts of Kaduna, Nasarawa, Benue, Lagos, Kwara, Taraba, Oyo, Ogun, Cross River, Delta, Akwa Ibom, Ebonyi, Anambra, and Enugu states. He states, “Today’s session reflects our dedication to public engagement, ensuring climate knowledge benefits all 36 states and the FCT, including remote communities. Translating the SCP into Hausa, Igbo, Yoruba, and Pidgin ensures inclusivity, making climate knowledge accessible to all, including remote communities across Nigeria.”
