During a ceremony in Abuja, where 261 engineers were conferred with the prestigious fellowship of the society, the NSE leadership reminded the inductees that the recognition comes with expectations of continued excellence and integrity.

“This honour is not just a celebration of past achievements—it is a call to serve at a higher level,” said the president of the NSE, addressing the new fellows. “The society reserves the right to withdraw this status from anyone whose conduct undermines the dignity of our profession.”

The president underscored the essential role of engineers in shaping Nigeria’s future, particularly in tackling challenges in infrastructure, energy, transportation, housing, and public services. She added that engineers must remain at the forefront of innovation and nation-building efforts.

Also speaking at the event, the chairman of the board of fellows praised the inductees for their commitment and contributions, describing them as role models in the engineering community.

In a separate event, the NSE president reiterated the need for unity and collaboration within the engineering sector, noting that professional compliance and collective action are critical to advancing industry standards.

Speaking at the 33rd Engineering Assembly themed ‘Advancing Quality Engineering Services and Businesses in Nigeria: Professional Compliance and Remuneration’, she affirmed the society’s continued support for regulatory efforts aimed at enhancing the profession.

“This project goes beyond physical construction—it represents access, opportunity, and cohesion for our people,” Tinubu said.

The completed 30-kilometre stretch, running from Ahmadu Bello Way to Eleko Village, is part of a planned 700-kilometre coastal highway covering nine states.

In addition, the President commissioned several major infrastructure projects, including sections of the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, the East-West Road, the Alesi–Ugep corridor, and the Enugu–Lokpanta axis, while initiating new routes such as the Ibadan–Ife–Akure–Benin Highway and the Nembe–Brass Road.

These efforts, the administration stated, reaffirm its focus on modernizing Nigeria’s infrastructure as a tool for unity and inclusive economic development.

The society specifically pointed out the appointments made within the newly reconstituted Executive Management of the twelve River Basin Development Authorities (RBDAs) under the Federal Ministry of Water Resources.

According to the NSE, many of the individuals appointed to senior engineering roles, such as Executive Director, Engineering, and Executive Director, Planning and Design, lack the necessary qualifications and professional credentials. The society’s findings revealed that only four of the appointments were allocated to qualified engineers.

NSE President, Mrs. Margret Oguntala, voiced her concerns over the implications of these appointments for Nigeria’s water resources management and the long-term sustainability of the sector. She emphasized that the River Basin Development Authorities play a crucial role in managing the country’s water resources, which are vital for agriculture, environmental sustainability, and economic growth.

Oguntala stressed that the leadership of such institutions must be composed of individuals with the technical expertise and professional qualifications needed to tackle the challenges faced in the sector. She warned that appointing individuals without the requisite engineering qualifications undermines the integrity of the institutions and hampers their ability to fulfill their mandates effectively.

The Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) has attributed the rising number of building collapses across the country to the involvement of non-professionals in construction projects.

This alarming trend has been highlighted by NSE President, Mrs. Margaret Oguntala, who emphasized the importance of engaging qualified professionals in construction to ensure the safety and integrity of structures.

Oguntala revealed that the NSE’s engineering regulation and management body, along with the failure analysis and investigation committee, has initiated inspections of project sites nationwide. This move aims to ensure that only certified professionals oversee construction activities, reducing the risk of structural failures.

Recent data indicates that Nigeria has experienced over 135 building collapse incidents, resulting in at least 26 deaths since 2022. In 2024 alone, more than 17 building collapses have been recorded, with Lagos accounting for over five incidents, Anambra with three, and Kano, Niger, and Plateau each reporting one.

Investigations conducted by the Building Collapse Prevention Guild (BCPG) have identified excessive loading, the use of substandard materials, faulty design, poor workmanship, and weak foundations as significant contributors to these collapses.

Speaking to journalists in Lagos, Oguntala stressed the NSE’s collaboration with the Council for Regulation of Engineering (COREN). The partnership has led to the establishment of technical committees at the state and national levels, aimed at preventing building collapses. Oguntala pointed out that no engineer has been found culpable in any of the building collapse cases over the years.

She urged engineers to adhere strictly to ethical practices, emphasizing that integrity is the foundation of public trust in the profession. Oguntala highlighted the importance of continuous professional development, stating that ongoing education and skills enhancement are essential for engineers to remain relevant in the ever-evolving global landscape.

Oguntala also called for inter-professional collaboration, encouraging engineers to share resources and best practices across various disciplines. She emphasized the need to foster a culture of learning and innovation that benefits both the profession and the nation.
