According to NiMet’s Daily Weather Outlook released on Thursday, moderate dust haze is expected in parts of Yobe, Katsina, Kano, Jigawa and northern Bauchi states during the morning hours, with horizontal visibility ranging between two and five kilometres.

The agency added that other parts of the northern region would experience slight dust haze in the morning, with the condition expected to persist through the afternoon and evening.

“Moderate to slight dust haze is expected to prevail across the northern region throughout the day,” NiMet said.

For the North-Central states, the agency predicted slight dust haze during the morning, which is expected to continue into the afternoon and evening hours.

In the southern part of the country, NiMet forecast generally sunny conditions with patches of cloud during the morning.

It noted that there are slim chances of isolated thunderstorms accompanied by light rainfall over parts of Bayelsa, Cross River, Akwa Ibom and Rivers states.

“Other areas in the South are expected to experience sunny skies with few patches of cloud,” the agency stated.

NiMet warned that the dust haze could reduce visibility, particularly during the early morning hours, and advised motorists to exercise caution while driving.

The agency also urged people with respiratory conditions to take necessary precautions due to the dusty atmosphere.

Airline operators were advised to obtain airport-specific weather information from NiMet to support safe and efficient flight operations.

NiMet reaffirmed its commitment to providing timely and accurate weather information to help the public and critical sectors of the economy plan effectively.

In its latest weather outlook released in Abuja, NiMet warned that dusty atmospheric conditions will dominate much of the country from Sunday through Tuesday, raising concerns over air quality, public health, road safety, and aviation operations.

The agency said the situation is expected to be most severe in the northern and central regions, where suspended dust particles will significantly reduce visibility and intensify respiratory risks.

Dust Haze to Intensify in the North and Central States

NiMet forecast moderate dust haze across northern states on Monday and Tuesday, with conditions expected to worsen by midweek. By Wednesday, thick dust haze is projected to blanket much of the region, potentially disrupting daily activities and transport movement.

The central region is also expected to experience persistent dusty conditions throughout the forecast period. NiMet noted that dust haze levels in the region will range from moderate to thick, limiting visibility and reducing air quality in major cities.

Southern Inland Cities Affected, Coastal Areas Face Storm Risk

In the southern region, inland cities are expected to record moderate dust haze, while coastal areas will experience relatively clearer conditions marked by sunshine and cloud patches.

However, NiMet cautioned that coastal states may witness unsettled weather later in the day, with isolated thunderstorms and light rainfall expected in parts of Lagos, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Delta, Bayelsa, and Rivers states.

The agency said the combination of dust haze and intermittent rainfall could further reduce visibility in affected areas.

Health, Transport, and Aviation Concerns

NiMet explained that high concentrations of airborne dust particles pose serious health risks, particularly for people with asthma, respiratory conditions, and cardiovascular issues.

Children, the elderly, and individuals with underlying health conditions were advised to limit outdoor exposure and take preventive measures such as wearing face coverings and staying hydrated.

Motorists were warned of poor visibility on highways, especially during early morning and late evening hours. Drivers were urged to reduce speed and exercise caution, particularly if rainfall coincides with dusty conditions.

For aviation operations, NiMet advised airline operators to rely on detailed, airport-specific weather briefings to avoid delays, diversions, or safety risks linked to low visibility.

Advisory Remains in Effect

NiMet said it will continue to monitor atmospheric conditions and issue updates as necessary, urging Nigerians to stay informed and adhere to safety advisories during the forecast period.

The agency, in its latest weather outlook released on Thursday in Abuja, has urged the public, especially those with respiratory conditions, to take necessary precautions due to the suspended dust particles in the atmosphere.

NiMet expects moderate dust haze across the North and North Central regions. However, thicker dust haze, which could reduce visibility to 1,000 meters or less, is anticipated in parts of Zamfara, Kano, Katsina, Yobe, Kaduna, Borno, and Jigawa throughout the day.

In the South, residents can expect cloudy skies with intervals of sunshine, with a possibility of isolated thunderstorms later in the afternoon and evening over Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, and Rivers States.

AIHS Moves to Transcorp Hilton, Targets 5,000+ Quality Participants from 21 Countries

The weather pattern remains largely the same on Saturday, with moderate dust haze expected to persist in the Northern region throughout the day. In the North Central region, slight dust haze will dominate the morning and evening periods. Meanwhile, in the Southern region, the forecast predicts cloudy conditions with sunshine spells, followed by thunderstorms in parts of Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, and Delta States.

NiMet anticipates slight dust haze across the North and North Central regions for most of Sunday. The Southern states will continue to experience cloudy skies with sunshine intervals, with isolated thunderstorms expected later in the day over Lagos, Ondo, Edo, Delta, Rivers, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom.

NiMet has advised the public to take necessary precautions, particularly individuals with asthma or other respiratory conditions, as dust particles in the air could trigger health issues.

The agency has also warned that strong winds may precede thunderstorms in the affected areas, urging residents to take necessary safety measures. Furthermore, airline operators have been advised to obtain airport-specific weather reports for proper flight planning to ensure passenger safety.

As Nigeria moves through this period of unpredictable weather, NiMet continues to monitor the situation and will provide updates as necessary. Residents are encouraged to stay informed and follow safety guidelines to avoid any adverse effects caused by these weather conditions.
