Moore said the president’s recent denial of targeted violence was aimed at protecting his political interests.

Speaking during an interview with Fox News on Sunday, Moore rejected Tinubu’s claim that Nigeria is not a religiously intolerant country.

He insisted that several states still enforce blasphemy laws that endanger Christians.

“Unfortunately, that is completely false,” Moore said. “There are states in Nigeria that have blasphemy laws.

People are facing the death penalty for blasphemy against Islam. I know President Tinubu is in a difficult position, and trying to protect his interests. But they are complicit to some degree for making statements like this.”

Moore referenced the case of Sunday Jackson, a Christian farmer from Adamawa, who was sentenced to death after defending himself from an armed herdsman.

The development comes ahead of a U.S. congressional hearing scheduled for Thursday to debate what lawmakers describe as widespread Christian persecution in Nigeria.

The session will examine recent killings, displacement, and reported attacks by armed groups across several states.

The hearing will be chaired by Congressman Chris Smith, head of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Africa and a long-standing critic of the Nigerian government’s handling of religious violence

. Smith previously pushed for sanctions against individuals linked to attacks and recommended that Fulani-ethnic militias be classified under the Entities of Particular Concern (EPC).

Senior U.S. officials including Jonathan Pratt of the Bureau of African Affairs and Jacob McGee of the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labour are expected to testify. A second panel will feature leading global religious-freedom advocates and Nigerian church leaders.

Meanwhile, the International Society for Civil Liberties and Rule of Law (Intersociety) has alleged that 99 Christians were killed in Nigeria between October 28 and November 11. The organisation also reported 114 kidnappings within the same period, blaming jihadist militant groups for the attacks.

The group’s findings were signed by its head, Emeka Umeagbalasi, alongside human rights lawyers Joy Igboeli and Ogochukwu Obi.

The President of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN), Bishop Francis Wale Oke, has called on President Bola Tinubu to collaborate with U.S. President Donald Trump in addressing what he described as an ongoing genocide against Christians in Nigeria.

Speaking to journalists in Ibadan, Oyo State, on Friday, Oke said the scale of attacks on Christian communities across northern and central Nigeria could no longer be denied.

“There is Christian genocide in Nigeria. There is no other name to call it. No Christian group is attacking Muslims. The patience of the church is being stretched,” he stated.

The cleric cited incidents such as the killing of Deborah Samuel, the abduction of Leah Sharibu and the Chibok girls, and multiple assaults in Benue, Taraba, Southern Kaduna, Owo, Niger, and Plateau States as evidence of widespread violence targeting Christians.

He explained that the perpetrators were radical groups such as Boko Haram and ISWAP, not the Muslim community, adding that their violent campaigns had cost hundreds of innocent lives, including pastors and worshippers.

Oke commended President Trump for his outspokenness on the issue, recalling that he previously listed Nigeria among countries of concern over religious persecution. However, he stressed that diplomatic cooperation — not confrontation — remained the best path forward.

“President Tinubu should ask for the cooperation of President Trump instead of opposing him. The President should root out radical groups like Boko Haram and ISWAP. Work together so Nigerians can live in peace,” he said.

He urged the Tinubu administration to take decisive action to protect citizens regardless of faith, noting that while the current government inherited the insecurity challenges, it must not allow them to persist.

“Government should not play politics with this matter. It is a cancer that needs urgent attention,” Oke added.

Meanwhile, President Tinubu is currently holding consultations with religious leaders following Trump’s recent threat of possible military action over alleged human rights abuses in Nigeria.

The high-level security meeting, held at the National Counter-Terrorism Centre (NCTC), assessed the implications of Trump’s remarks and deliberated on measures to coordinate a unified national security response.

Sources disclosed that the meeting, which began in the afternoon, was convened to review intelligence assessments and prepare for possible diplomatic and security outcomes.

The resolutions reached are expected to be communicated through official NSA channels.

Trump, in a post on his Truth Social platform, accused Nigeria’s government of failing to protect Christians from Islamist militants, warning that the U.S. “will attack and it will be fast, vicious, and sweet.” He later told reporters that both ground and air operations were being considered as part of the response.

Following the statement, Chad announced the immediate closure of its borders with Nigeria, citing security concerns and possible spillover effects of any U.S. military operation. President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno reportedly ordered a military lockdown along the border to prevent infiltration by armed groups.

Reacting to the development, Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, called for renewed diplomatic engagement between Nigeria and the United States, describing dialogue as the only path to resolving the dispute.

Similarly, the Pan-Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, warned against foreign intervention and urged President Bola Tinubu to expedite the creation of state police to curb insecurity.

In a separate statement, Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, said Trump’s stance was a reflection of Nigeria’s deteriorating security and governance, adding that the country’s designation as a “Country of Particular Concern” stemmed from leadership failures.

Security and diplomatic experts also cautioned that Trump’s comments could escalate tensions and harm investor confidence in Nigeria.

Professor Femi Otubanjo of the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA) described the threat as “frivolous and reactionary,” arguing that it did not reflect official U.S. foreign policy.

Dr. Muda Yusuf, CEO of the Centre for the Promotion of Private Enterprise (CPPE), warned that the remarks could undermine Nigeria’s global image and deter investment, despite lacking substantive policy backing.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian government is expected to issue an official statement addressing the situation, as diplomatic discussions continue to prevent escalation and maintain bilateral relations with the United States.
