The UK government is launching a new National Housing Bank to help solve the country’s housing crisis.

The bank will support developers with £16 billion in public funding. Another £6 billion is already in place. These funds will attract an estimated £53 billion in private investment.

The Labour government says the money will help protect homes, small businesses, and key services from rising flood risks.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s team announced the plan on Monday. Environment Minister Steve Reed said many flood defences are old and failing. He blamed the past government for leaving them in poor shape.

“We’re acting fast with the biggest flood defence project in UK history,” Reed said.

A recent report shows that more than 6 million properties in England face flood risk. That number could rise to over 8 million by 2050.

The report also warns that much of the country’s best farmland, roads, and railways are at risk too.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves revealed the plan during the recent spending review, calling it the largest funding move for social housing in 50 years.

The plan aims to support Labour’s goal of building 1.5 million homes in five years. Reeves said £10 billion will go through Homes England to help bring in private investors. This, she explained, should unlock hundreds of thousands of new homes.

Many in the property sector welcomed the move. Justin Carty of CBRE said the funding gives the sector a much-needed boost. But he also warned that planning rules and delivery delays still stand in the way of real progress.
