The United States Mission in Nigeria has explained that its recent adjustment to the validity of non-immigrant visas for Nigerians is part of a global policy review and not influenced by political factors or Nigeria’s foreign affiliations.

In a statement issued Friday, the Mission emphasized that the decision to reduce most non-immigrant visas to single-entry, three-month validity was based strictly on security and technical standards applied worldwide.

“This reduction is not the result of any nation’s stance on third-country deportees, introduction of e-visa policies, or affiliations with groups like BRICS,” the statement clarified.

The US Mission reaffirmed that the change does not reflect any deterioration in US-Nigeria relations. Instead, it is part of efforts to maintain the integrity of the US immigration system.

“We remain committed to working closely with the Nigerian public and government officials to help them meet those criteria and benchmarks, thereby ensuring safe, lawful, and mutually beneficial travel between our nations,” the statement added.

The clarification comes in response to public concern over the shift from the previous five-year multiple-entry visa policy to a more restrictive three-month single-entry format.

While the new policy marks a significant change for Nigerian travellers, the Mission assured that the US remains dedicated to fostering strong bilateral

The controversy arose after General Musa disclosed that he and several senior military officers were denied visas to attend an event in Canada honoring war veterans. While some members of the Nigerian delegation received approvals, others were left stranded without explanation.

Expressing disappointment, Musa described the incident as a “wake-up call” for Nigeria to reinforce its sovereignty and avoid being taken for granted by foreign nations.

AIHS Moves to Transcorp Hilton, Targets 5,000+ Quality Participants from 21 Countries

Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Friday, Minister Tunji-Ojo condemned the action, stating that visa policies should be handled with mutual respect and diplomatic consideration.

“Without knowing the full facts, I think even for us, the issue of reciprocity has to be given due consideration,” he said. “As much as we are not ready to interfere with the sovereignty of other nations, migration management and visa policies must be treated with respect. Denying a visa to the Chief of Defence Staff is not just disrespectful to him, but to Nigeria as a whole. If this can happen to the CDS, then I worry for the average Nigerian.”

The minister noted that even if the embassy had concerns regarding the visa applications, there were diplomatic channels through which such matters could have been addressed. He expressed confidence that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs would take the necessary steps to resolve the issue and uphold Nigeria’s dignity on the global stage.

Tensions have flared between Nigeria and Canada following the Canadian embassy’s refusal to grant visas to Chief of Defense Staff, General Christopher Musa, and other senior military officers. The visa denials have raised concerns over diplomatic relations, fairness in visa issuance, and the treatment of Nigerian officials on the global stage.

Speaking at an event in Abuja, Nigeria’s National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu, did not mince words in his reaction to the decision, stating, “They can go to hell.” His strong remarks reflect the frustration within Nigeria’s leadership over what they perceive as an unjustified refusal of entry to officials invited for an international event honoring military veterans.

General Musa, who was one of those affected, shared his disappointment, explaining that the invitation was extended to him and his team, yet while some officers were granted visas, others were inexplicably denied. “Every disappointment is a blessing. I was meant to be in Canada for an event to honor our veterans—those injured in battle. We were invited along with our team, but while half of us got visas, the other half was denied. It’s very disappointing,” he stated.

AIHS Moves to Transcorp Hilton, Targets 5,000+ Quality Participants from 21 Countries

The Nigerian government views the visa denial as a lack of respect for its military leadership and has expressed concerns about the broader implications for diplomatic relations between the two nations. The controversy has reignited debates about how Nigerian officials and citizens are treated by foreign embassies, with some calling for a review of Nigeria’s visa policies toward Canadian officials.

Canada’s Stricter Immigration Policies
The situation arises amid Canada’s tightening of immigration regulations, which grants immigration officers broader powers to revoke or deny temporary resident visas (TRVs), electronic travel authorizations (eTAs), and other entry permits under specific circumstances. These new rules, which took effect on January 31, 2025, aim to strengthen border security and ensure that visa programs remain credible and effective.

According to the Canadian government, reasons for visa refusals may include:

A change in the applicant’s status or circumstances, making them ineligible (e.g., providing false information or having a criminal history).
Concerns that the applicant may not leave Canada at the end of their permitted stay.
Issues related to lost, stolen, or abandoned visa documents.
The Nigerian government, however, has criticized the application of these policies, arguing that denying visas to its top military officers—who were invited for an official event—undermines diplomatic relations and international cooperation

HOUSING IS A RIGHT NOT A PRIVILEGE

Diplomatic Fallout and Future Implications
Nigeria’s displeasure over the visa denials has fueled discussions about the country’s standing in global diplomacy and the need for reciprocal policies. Some officials have suggested that Nigeria should reassess its visa policy for Canadian officials and citizens, while others have called for diplomatic engagement to resolve the matter.

This incident is not the first time Nigerian officials and citizens have faced challenges in obtaining visas from Western nations. In the past, similar issues have led to diplomatic tensions and raised concerns over perceived bias in visa processing for African nations.

As both countries navigate this diplomatic hurdle, it remains to be seen whether Canada will provide further clarifications on the reasons for the visa denials or if Nigeria will take retaliatory measures in response to the incident.

Germany has unveiled a groundbreaking online visa application platform aimed at streamlining the process for Nigerians and others seeking opportunities to work, study, or reunite with family in the country.

This initiative is part of Germany’s broader strategy to modernize its immigration system and address its critical shortage of skilled workers.

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock highlighted the urgency behind the reform, emphasizing that Germany’s economy is in dire need of skilled labor to maintain its global competitiveness. According to her, the country faces an annual deficit of at least 400,000 skilled workers, spanning vital sectors such as healthcare, technology, and skilled trades.

Baerbock lamented the barriers posed by outdated bureaucratic processes, stating, “At times like these, we cannot afford to turn away the best talent simply because of cumbersome paper application forms and endlessly long waiting periods. Germany, as one of the world’s largest economies and a modern immigration destination, must offer a visa process that is not just efficient but also cutting-edge, digital, and secure.”

The newly launched online portal is designed to be accessible to applicants globally and offers streamlined access to 28 categories of national visas. It is supported by Germany’s extensive network of 167 visa offices worldwide, ensuring that applicants from every corner of the globe can benefit from this innovation. For Nigerians in particular, the platform opens up an avenue to pursue new career paths, academic aspirations, and family reunification with greater ease.

The portal reflects a significant shift in Germany’s approach to immigration, signaling a commitment to building a more inclusive and responsive system. The digital framework eliminates many of the bottlenecks that previously hindered visa applications, from excessive paperwork to prolonged processing times. Applicants can now navigate the process in a more user-friendly environment, which not only saves time but also reduces the frustration associated with traditional methods.

Germany’s move to simplify visa access aligns with its national ambition to attract the brightest minds and the most capable hands from around the world. Skilled workers are seen as essential to sustaining the nation’s economic growth, particularly in sectors struggling to fill vacancies. The German government has also recognized that the country is in a global competition for talent, with other economies vying for the same pool of skilled professionals. This portal is a proactive step to ensure Germany remains an attractive destination for talent, especially from regions like Africa.

In addition to facilitating visa applications, the portal represents a shift toward a more transparent and efficient immigration process. By digitizing the system, Germany aims to reduce bureaucratic delays while maintaining a secure and organized framework for processing applications. This modernization effort not only benefits applicants but also helps German consulates and visa offices manage the increasing demand for visas in a structured manner.

For Nigerians aspiring to build a life in Germany, this development is a game-changer. The online platform provides a clear and efficient pathway to opportunities that were once bogged down by administrative hurdles. Whether pursuing education, embarking on a career, or reuniting with loved ones, Nigerians can now navigate the visa process with greater confidence and efficiency.

Germany’s investment in a digital visa system underscores the importance of immigration as a cornerstone of its economic and social strategy. By embracing technology and reducing barriers, the country is setting a new standard for how immigration systems can adapt to the demands of a rapidly changing world.

This portal not only represents a practical solution to an immediate labor shortage but also symbolizes a shift in Germany’s perception of immigration—from a bureaucratic challenge to a strategic opportunity. As one of the world’s largest economies, Germany is positioning itself as a welcoming destination for global talent, and this new initiative sends a clear message: the country is open for business, innovation, and new beginnings.

The multiple-entry visa, before its cancellation, allowed holders to enter and exit Canada as they pleased but an update by the government on Wednesday stated that it was no longer considered the “standard document.”

“Guidance has been updated to indicate that multiple-entry visas issued to maximum validity are no longer considered to be the standard document,” reads a statement by the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).

“Officers may exercise their judgement in deciding whether to issue a single or multiple-entry visa, and in determining the validity period,” the statement added.

Majority of Nigerians had fled the Sub-Saharan nation in light of inflation and rising insecurity to find refuge in Canada who welcomed immigrants to coubter a declining population and meet workforce demands.

But the country, now overwhelmed with immigrants, was backpedalling its approach to address the recent influx.

In October, the IRCC announced a reduction in its permanent resident target for 2025 from 500,000 to 395,000. The target for 2026 previously 500,000 will decrease to 380,000, and for 2027, Canada plans to admit 365,000 permanent residents.

Speaking at the Africa CEO Forum Annual Summit in Kigali, Dangote shared his frustrations with Rwandan President Paul Kagame, contrasting the challenges African investors face with the ease of travel enjoyed by those with French passports.

“I still complained to President Kagame. I told him that as an investor, I have to now apply for 35 different visas on my passport, and I told Mr. President, I really don’t have the time to go and be dropping my passports in embassies to get a visa,” Dangote said.

“But you see, the most annoying thing is that yes, if you are treating everybody the same, then I can understand.”

Dangote illustrated the disparity by highlighting that Patrick Pouyanne, chairman of Total Energies, does not need 35 visas on his French passport to access African countries.

“You don’t need 35 visas on your French passport. This means you have freer movement than myself in Africa,” he noted.

Dangote also addressed the broader challenges of conducting business within Africa, emphasizing the need to strengthen regional markets as a precursor to a successful Africa Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA).

READ ALSO: UK Increases Skilled Worker Visa Salary Threshold to £38,700 to Cut Migration

“Our main job is to make sure the regional markets all work. Once they work, then we can now go to AfCFTA. But then, for AfCFTA also, we need to make sure that it works,” he stated.

He pointed out the low intra-continental trade rate, which is currently less than 16 percent, and urged African investors to take the lead in driving economic development.

“We cannot have a very promising continent and our intra-trade rate is less than 16 percent. Okay, so we Africans will have to do it. If we are waiting for foreigners to come and do it, both the development of Africa, it’s not going to happen,” Dangote emphasized.

“So it can only happen to us Africans. We must risk our sources and make sure that we lead, then we will have people who actually trust and believe in Africa like Patrick to come and help us to push to the next level,” he concluded.

This move, according to Home Secretary James Cleverly, represents a 48 percent increase in the minimum wage aimed at reducing migration and prioritizing British workers.

The changes, which are now in effect, are designed to reduce migration and prevent the undercutting of British workers by employers seeking to recruit cheap labor from overseas. UK businesses hiring overseas workers on a Skilled Worker visa are now required to pay significantly higher salaries.

In a statement on its website, the UK government stated that this increase will help ensure the country’s immigration system focuses on recruiting high-skilled workers, thereby aiding in the growth of the UK economy while reducing overall migration numbers. Additionally, the shortage occupation list has been abolished, preventing employers from paying migrants less than UK workers in shortage occupations.

A new Immigration Salary List (ISL) has been established following advice from the Migration Advisory Committee (MAC). Roles on this list will only be included if they are skilled and in shortage, and if including them is sensible considering the efforts being made by sectors to invest in the resident workforce. Employers are encouraged to prioritize training, upskilling, and hiring domestic workers.

The government’s action comes as part of its Back to Work plan, a £2.5 billion initiative aimed at supporting over a million people who are long-term unemployed, sick, or disabled, and breaking down barriers to work.

Home Secretary James Cleverly stated, “It’s time to turn off the taps and end the flow of cheap workers from abroad. Mass migration is unsustainable and unfair, undercutting the wages of hard-working people. We are refocusing our immigration system to prioritize the brightest and best while reducing overall numbers.”

The UK government has also taken previous steps to reduce migration, including ending the ability of nearly all postgraduate students to bring dependents to the UK, expecting a drastic fall in student dependent applications this year.
