The senator representing Edo North, Adams Oshiomhole, has called for the revocation of licences of South African companies operating in Nigeria, including MTN Nigeria and DSTV, following renewed xenophobic attacks on Nigerians in South Africa.

Senate Pushes Stronger Response

Speaking during plenary, Oshiomhole urged the Federal Government to adopt firm measures, stressing the need for reciprocity in international relations.

“We didn’t come here to share tears… If you hit me, I’ll hit you,” he said, describing the situation as an economic and diplomatic issue.

He proposed the nationalisation of MTN and withdrawal of its operating licence, arguing that the company repatriates significant revenue while Nigerians face hostility abroad.

Call to Revoke DSTV Licence

The lawmaker also called for the revocation of DSTV’s licence, citing alleged unfair practices and economic exploitation.

He maintained that such actions would create opportunities for local firms and strengthen Nigeria’s bargaining position.

Reps Condemn Xenophobic Attacks

Meanwhile, the House of Representatives has condemned the latest wave of attacks, urging immediate diplomatic and protective measures.

Lawmakers expressed concern over the safety of Nigerians in South Africa, noting rising fear among citizens living in the country.

AU Intervention Sought

Also speaking, Senator Victor Umeh described the situation as alarming and called on the African Union to intervene.

He urged the regional body to impose sanctions, stressing that Nigeria cannot continue to tolerate attacks on its citizens.

Rising Pressure on Federal Government

Lawmakers linked the tensions to internal political dynamics in South Africa, where anti-immigrant sentiments have gained traction.

They argued that Nigerians in South Africa are economically active and contribute positively, not a burden on the host country.

The development signals increasing pressure on the Federal Government to take a tougher stance, combining diplomatic engagement with economic countermeasures to protect Nigerians abroad.
