The Lagos State Government will begin digital house numbering in Lagos on July 1, 2025. This move is part of a broader plan to modernize urban infrastructure and improve service delivery across the state. The project, called the Lagos Identifier Programme, will assign digital codes to buildings to support better planning, emergency response, transportation, and tax administration.
Dr. Babatunde Olajide, Special Adviser to the Governor on e-GIS and Urban Development, explained that this system is a major step toward making Lagos a smarter city. By linking each property to a unique digital address, the government aims to respond more quickly to residents’ needs.
The rollout will start in Ikeja, which has approximately 23,000 properties. Agencies of the Lagos State Government, along with a technical partner, will handle the production and installation of the digital address tags.
Yinka Adesiyan, a representative from the technical team, said that each house and street will have a barcode containing key location information. Scanning the code will give residents access to helpful data and services related to their property. The initiative is expected to enhance planning, safety, and service access for everyone in the state.
Lagos believes that if implemented successfully, this project could serve as a model for digital address systems in other parts of Nigeria. It marks a significant step in aligning the city with global smart-city standards while directly benefiting its residents.
