The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, has resigned from the cabinet of Bola Ahmed Tinubu to pursue the Bauchi State governorship ahead of the 2027 elections.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs Nigeria confirmed the development on Monday through its spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa.
According to available information, Tuggar submitted his resignation letter to the President shortly after noon and is expected to contest under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The resignation follows a directive issued earlier in March by the presidency, mandating all political appointees seeking elective positions to step down from their roles.
The directive, communicated through the office of George Akume, set March 31, 2026, as the deadline for compliance.
It applies to ministers, ministers of state, special advisers, senior special assistants, and other political office holders intending to contest in upcoming elections.
Tuggar’s exit signals the beginning of political realignments ahead of the 2027 electoral cycle, particularly in Bauchi State, where the governorship race is expected to attract strong contenders.
