The Anambra State government has announced a major housing initiative that will see the construction of 10,000 low-cost housing units in Isiagu, Awka South Local Government Area.
Commissioner for Housing, Pauly Onyeka, confirmed the development in a statement on Monday, noting that the project is aimed at reducing the accommodation deficit faced by civil servants and low-income earners across the state.
According to Onyeka, Governor Charles Soludo had earlier approved the project, but its execution was delayed due to last-minute setbacks that have now been resolved. He added that with the dry season beginning, construction work will commence without further delay.
He explained that earlier corrections in the project design created certain challenges, which have now been addressed in partnership with private sector developers handling the Public–Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement.
The commissioner said the state’s ongoing road expansion strategy has opened up new areas suitable for housing development, making the Isiagu project more viable.
Onyeka also highlighted the key infrastructure roles the Ministry of Housing plays in other state projects, including the upgrade of Ekwueme Square, improvements to Commissioners’ Quarters, and construction work at the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, Amaku, where a new Trauma Centre is underway.
He further revealed that the state government, in collaboration with the Federal Government, plans to deliver an additional 500 housing units for low-income earners as part of efforts to expand access to affordable homes.
Appearing before the Anambra State House of Assembly Committee on Appropriation to defend the ministry’s 2026 budget, Onyeka described the housing initiative as a structured plan designed to give workers and low-income households better access to decent accommodating.
