Enugu State has taken a significant step in reshaping Nigeria’s aviation landscape with the official launch of Enugu Air, a state-backed airline envisioned to link the country’s southeastern region with the global travel network.
Governor Peter Mbah unveiled the airline at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, during a ceremony held on Monday, describing it as a strategic vehicle for regional integration, trade, and international connectivity.
“Enugu Air is more than a state project—it’s a gateway to the world. Our ambition is to establish Enugu as a central hub for air travel within Africa and to the wider international community,” Mbah stated at the event. “We’re creating simpler, faster, and more dignified access to the southeast—particularly for the diaspora, investors, and tourists.”
The airline, which begins with domestic routes, was inaugurated with its maiden flight under a temporary operational arrangement with private airline XEJET. The collaboration allows Enugu Air to commence services immediately while its own Air Operator Certificate (AOC) process is underway.
Federal Endorsement and Aviation Sector Reform
Speaking at the launch, Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, praised the state’s bold move, calling it a model of sub-national initiative in line with federal efforts to deepen aviation sector reform.
“This launch is a testament to visionary leadership at the sub-national level,” Keyamo said. “It fits perfectly into the federal government’s aviation development plan, which seeks to promote indigenous carriers and expand connectivity across the country.”
The Minister urged stakeholders to maintain professional standards in the airline’s operations and cautioned against political interference or unsustainable practices. He also pledged the Ministry’s support in facilitating fleet expansion and regulatory compliance.
Public-Private Partnership and Future Expansion
The airline’s operations are backed by a public-private partnership, with XEJET designated as the interim carrier. According to the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), XEJET has completed all requirements under the agency’s five-stage certification process to operate Embraer 170 aircraft on behalf of Enugu Air.
Passengers can now book flights through XEJET’s platform, accessible via a redirection from Enugu Air’s official website.
Director-General of NCAA, Capt. Chris Najomo, described the partnership as “a smart and compliant entry” into the aviation space. “This move supports our mission of making it easier to do business in Nigeria’s aviation industry while keeping safety and regulation at the forefront,” he said.
The NCAA also reiterated its ongoing commitment to supporting local airlines, ensuring a competitive environment and promoting best practices across the industry.
A Gateway for Commerce and Culture
Initially operating within Nigeria’s busy Enugu–Abuja–Lagos route, often referred to as the “golden triangle,” Enugu Air is expected to drive economic activity, support tourism, and facilitate diaspora movement.
With three Embraer jets currently in its fleet, the airline is targeting rapid expansion into regional and international markets once its AOC is approved.
Governor Mbah emphasized that the airline forms part of a larger strategy to reposition Enugu as a logistics and commercial powerhouse in the South-East. “Our long-term vision is to make Enugu a globally connected city—a center for innovation, business, and culture,” he said.
A Model for States and Investors
Established in July 2025, Enugu Air is one of the first state-driven commercial airlines in Nigeria’s recent history. Analysts say the initiative could serve as a template for other states looking to unlock economic potential through infrastructure investment.
Industry experts believe the success of Enugu Air will depend on operational efficiency, transparency in governance, and strategic expansion into high-demand markets.
With backing from both state and federal authorities, the airline is being positioned as a symbol of modern governance and a practical solution to regional mobility challenges.
As the aircraft took off on its inaugural journey, it signaled more than just a maiden flight—it marked the beginning of a new chapter in Nigeria’s air travel history, with Enugu State at the helm.
