The Federal Government is set to generate over two million jobs nationwide through the implementation of the Renewed Hope Social Housing Programme, a key component of its broader housing and economic empowerment agenda.

Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Arc. Ahmed Musa Dangiwa, made this known during an engagement session with the House of Representatives Committee on Housing and Habitat at the National Assembly in Abuja. He described the programme as a transformative national effort aimed at addressing housing deficits while simultaneously creating economic opportunities for Nigerians.

According to the Minister, the ambitious housing plan will see the construction of 100 housing units in each of the 774 local government areas, with a projected employment impact of at least 27 jobs per location—translating to over 2 million jobs across the country. The initiative is tailored to benefit low-income earners, vulnerable populations, and internally displaced persons (IDPs), Dangiwa said.

“The Renewed Hope Social Housing Programme is designed not just to provide affordable homes, but to stimulate local economies by creating employment in all parts of Nigeria,” he stated. “At the rate of 27 jobs per local government, this is a massive opportunity for both skilled and unskilled labourers across 77,400 sites.”

He disclosed that funding for the initiative will come from the Renewed Hope Infrastructure Development Fund, with official documents awaiting final approval by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Dangiwa added that once the framework receives the presidential nod, a bill will be presented to the National Assembly to establish a National Social Housing Fund, which would ensure the programme’s long-term sustainability.

In his update on the ministry’s ongoing projects, Dangiwa noted that many of the Renewed Hope Cities and Estate developments across the country are nearing completion. He said that most of these projects—carried over from 2022 supplementary budget allocations—are set to be commissioned within two months, pending the timely release of funds from the Budget Office.

Particular progress was noted in the Renewed Hope City located in Karsana, Abuja, which has already seen site visits by developers and financiers. However, the minister flagged a minor delay due to ongoing construction of access roads overseen by the FCT Minister, which may affect the project’s August completion target.

Additional developments in Lagos and Kano States were also reported to be fully ready for commissioning, with home subscriptions already underway. Dangiwa affirmed that some developers have begun recovering their investments through the subscription process.

On funding prioritisation, the ministry has reached out to the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation, requesting recognition as a key sector for future fund disbursement cycles.

Chairman of the House Committee on Housing and Habitat, Hon. Abdulmumin Jibrin Kofa, praised the initiative and reaffirmed the committee’s support. “This committee is fully committed to working closely with the Ministry to ensure these plans materialise and positively impact our citizens,” Kofa said. “We’re here to ensure government interventions are not just announced but seen and felt.”

The Renewed Hope Social Housing Programme is one of the flagship projects under President Tinubu’s economic revival blueprint and is expected to play a crucial role in bridging the nation’s housing gap while expanding job opportunities for millions.
