Gunmen Attack St. Andrews Anglican Church in Anambra, Kill Two, Burn Cleric’s Apartment

Armed assailants stormed St. Andrews Anglican Church, Isiokwe, in Lilu community, Ihiala Local Government Area, in the early hours of Sunday, killing two people, including the wife of the church priest, and setting vehicles and parts of the church ablaze.

Eyewitnesses Describe Brutal Attack
According to residents, the attackers struck while worshippers were preparing for Sunday services. They reportedly opened fire, set the priest’s residence and church properties on fire, and caused widespread panic. Some injured victims are currently receiving treatment, while the church premises remain partially destroyed.

One eyewitness said, “The heavily armed hoodlums invaded the church, started shooting, and set properties ablaze, including part of the main church building. It is shocking that this wicked act occurred on a holy day in a Christian community.”

Police Respond and Intensify Security Operations
SP Tochukwu Ikenga, spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, confirmed the attack. He said Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, has condemned the assault and deployed joint security teams to the area. Surveillance and intelligence-driven operations have been intensified to apprehend the perpetrators.

“The CP condemns this heinous act against innocent worshippers, extending deepest sympathies to the victims’ families and the Lilu community,” Ikenga said. “Residents are urged to remain calm and cooperate with security operatives to ensure justice is served.”

Lilu Community Under Threat
Lilu, a border town between Anambra and Imo states, has experienced repeated attacks from gunmen in recent months, raising concerns about security in the area. Authorities have vowed to clamp down on criminals and restore peace to the community.
