Imported Petrol Undercuts Dangote PMS After Price Adjustment

Imported Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) has become cheaper than petrol supplied by the Dangote Petroleum Refinery following a recent upward review of the refinery’s gantry price.

Industry data from the Major Energies Marketers Association of Nigeria show that the landing cost of imported petrol stood at ₦728.88 per litre last week, about ₦70 lower than Dangote’s new ex-depot price of ₦799 per litre.

The price adjustment, announced on Monday night, marked the end of the refinery’s temporary festive-season price support. Following the review, Dangote-affiliated MRS filling stations adjusted pump prices to ₦839 per litre.

The refinery said the earlier price reduction was a deliberate intervention to cushion consumers during the festive period and was never intended to be permanent. It added that prices were realigned to sustainable levels to support long-term market stability.

Before the adjustment, imported petrol had remained costlier than Dangote’s ex-depot price, limiting the ability of importers to compete. The new pricing structure has reopened competition in the downstream market, although it remains uncertain whether importers will reflect the lower landing cost at retail outlets.

The Dangote refinery said it continues to supply about 50 million litres of petrol daily and remains committed to uninterrupted nationwide distribution.

Industry stakeholders say the development underscores ongoing price volatility in Nigeria’s deregulated fuel market, as domestic refining and fuel imports continue to compete for market share.
