The Delta State Police Command has declared Chief Jerry Nkeeshe, a prominent community leader in Asaba, wanted following his alleged role in the killing of three youths during a land dispute.

SP Bright Edafe, the command’s spokesperson, confirmed the development in a statement on Tuesday, noting that the suspect allegedly led an armed group that attacked residents in Okwe community, a suburb of Asaba, on November 24, 2025.

“The Delta Police Command has activated a full-scale manhunt for Chief Jerry Nkeeshe, the Owelle of Onicha-Olona Community, and all members of his armed group,” Edafe said.

According to the police, Nkeeshe and his associates, some disguised in army camouflage, attempted to enforce an unauthorized quit notice on the land without any court order. The confrontation led to indiscriminate gunfire, resulting in the deaths of three youths.

The police confirmed that the injured youths were taken to a nearby hospital but later died while receiving treatment.

In response, the Commissioner of Police, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, deployed tactical teams and intelligence operatives to track, identify, and arrest all individuals involved. The CP condemned the incident as a “reckless and unprovoked display of lawlessness” and assured that no one, regardless of title or influence, would escape justice.

Edafe added that normalcy has been restored in the community with ongoing patrols and intelligence-led operations to maintain security. Residents have been urged to cooperate with law enforcement to ensure the arrest of the suspects.

The Delta Police Command remains committed to enforcing the rule of law and preventing further violence in Asaba and its surrounding areas.

Three children were rescued when a fire gutted a storey building on Obi Onuorah Crescent, behind Okowe Plaza in Asaba, the Delta State capital.

During a visit to the scene on Friday, it was observed that the roof and two apartments were completely destroyed, resulting in property damage worth millions of naira. The cause of the fire was yet to be determined at the time of reporting.

A widow and mother of four, Mrs. Gloria Sado, who was seen weeping, appealed to Nigerians for assistance. She recounted, “I came back Thursday night around 9 pm and saw our house on fire. My three children were inside, while one was with me at the market. It took a lot of effort to rescue my children. I don’t know the cause of the fire.”

Mrs. Sado also expressed frustration with the fire services, stating, “All three fire services that came did not have water to quench the fire. Our property was burnt to ashes.”

Her neighbor, Simon Amalimen, a father of two, shared his experience: “I was in my apartment when I heard shouts of ‘fire, fire.’ I rushed out and saw the fire coming from my neighbor’s apartment. Knowing that the three children were inside sleeping, we immediately went in to rescue them, but the fire had already spread to my apartment. My wife and two children were also rescued. I escaped with only the boxers I was wearing.”
