The alert, issued by the National Flood Early Warning Centre of the Ministry of Environment, identified Ebonyi, Anambra, Ogun, Taraba, Cross River, Benue, Imo, Delta, Rivers, and Abia states as likely to experience significant rainfall that may trigger flooding. Communities listed include Onitsha, Atani, Afikpo, Ayetoro, Ikom, Owerri, Port Harcourt, and Umuahia.

The ministry advised residents and local authorities to take precautionary measures to reduce risks to lives and property. Usman Bokani, Director of Erosion, Flood, and Coastal Zone Management, emphasized the importance of early preparedness to mitigate flood impacts.

The ministry’s forecast aligns with earlier warnings from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency, which cautioned farmers against early planting after unpredictable rains in February and March 2026. Lagos State had also issued alerts for heavy rainfall and flash flooding as the rainy season approached.

Residents are urged to remain vigilant and follow official updates to ensure safety.

The ranking is based on headline inflation, showing where prices of essential goods and services rose the least.

10. Jigawa – 16.3%

Inflation dropped from 23.1% to 16.3%, driven by government agricultural programmes like the Rice Millionaire Project and Special Agro-Processing Zones.

9. Akwa Ibom – 16.3%

Down from 20.7% in August, with food inflation at 9%. A new ₦695 billion budget and food security committee helped stabilise prices.

8. Imo – 15.8%

Improved security and stable housing costs reduced inflation from 18.3% to 15.8%, with food inflation at 12.4%.

7. Ebonyi – 14.8%

Inflation eased from 21.2% to 14.8%. Despite strong farm output, transport and distribution costs remain high.

6. Bayelsa – 14.8%

Inflation dropped from 23.8% but food inflation rose to 21.9% due to high import dependence.

5. Sokoto – 14%

Inflation fell sharply from 22.5%. Salary support to civil servants helped ease short-term pressures.

4. Enugu – 12.4%

Transport and rent relief cut inflation from 14.2%. Fertilizer distribution supported food supply.

3. Bauchi – 12.4%

Inflation declined from 15.3%, food inflation to 2.8%, supported by better roads, fertilizer subsidies, and grain reserves.

2. Niger – 11.8%

Inflation halved from 25.5%. Flood relief, road repairs, and food aid helped stabilise prices.

1. Anambra – 9.3%

Now Nigeria’s most affordable state, down from 14.2%. Market digitalisation and rural water projects reduced costs.

Overall, agricultural expansion, infrastructure upgrades, and relief programmes are helping many states achieve lower living costs despite national inflation pressures.

The incident occurred on February 18, 2014, at Apo Mechanical Village, where the man was working as a general apprentice learning to repair Peugeot vehicles. According to him, a shop owner dealing in vehicle spare parts pleaded with him and other apprentices to assist in relocating his container to avoid it being demolished.

“In the process of moving a metal pole near the container, I didn’t realise there was a high-tension wire above us. The pole touched the wire, and I was electrocuted. The burns I sustained on my hands and legs were severe,” he explained.

He was rushed to a clinic, then a health centre, and eventually to Asokoro General Hospital, where he underwent two surgeries. When one of the surgeries failed and his arms became stiff and blackened, doctors advised amputation.

“My family hoped there could be another way, so we tried a herbal centre, but my condition worsened. I was later taken to the National Orthopaedic Hospital in Enugu, where both arms were amputated,” he said.

The man, who was just 18 at the time, said his father, uncle, and well-wishers bore the cost of his treatment. Although the ordeal left him dependent in some situations, he has taught himself to handle daily tasks like bathing, washing clothes, and carrying his bag.

“It’s not easy, but I refuse to let it weigh me down. People won’t always be there to help, so I had to figure out ways to live independently,” he said.

Despite dropping out of secondary school due to financial constraints, he continues to adapt to life without arms and is determined not to let his disability define him.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially launched the construction of the ambitious 465-kilometre Calabar-Ebonyi-Benue-Nasarawa-Abuja Superhighway — a project poised to boost economic connectivity across multiple states and reshape travel in Nigeria’s eastern and central corridors.

The flag-off ceremony took place on Wednesday at Amuro Primary School in Afikpo, Ebonyi State. Representing the President at the event was Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru, who conveyed Tinubu’s appreciation to the people of the South-East for their consistent support and urged continued unity and cooperation.

The President, through Nwifuru, pledged that the superhighway would not only be delivered on time but would also meet the highest quality standards as outlined in its design.

Speaking to the significance of the development, Governor Nwifuru emphasized that the project marked a major turning point for the region.

“This initiative reflects the President’s commitment to using infrastructure as a key driver of national development,” he said. “It is a powerful statement that every part of this country matters.”

He noted the transformative potential of the highway, particularly for landlocked states like Ebonyi, whose agricultural and mineral wealth have long been constrained by limited access to wider markets.

“With this superhighway, we are breaking out of that isolation,” Nwifuru declared. “It’s a game-changer. It opens up new opportunities—lower transport costs, faster market access, increased employment, and safer travel for students and workers alike.”

He described the project not just as a construction effort, but as “a symbol of inclusion and renewed national integration.”

Minister of Works, David Umahi, also addressed the crowd, describing President Tinubu as a unifying leader committed to equitable development across all regions of Nigeria.

“President Tinubu doesn’t play politics with development,” Umahi said. “His projects don’t stop at party lines or regional divides. What we’re seeing is a clear message that every part of this country matters.”

Umahi added that the road project is one of several key legacy initiatives under the Tinubu administration and promised that it would be completed within the scheduled timeline. He called on local communities to offer their full support to ensure smooth execution.

He also reflected on the region’s long-standing lack of federal investment, noting, “As a former governor, I can say with certainty that Ebonyi has never received this level of attention. President Tinubu is changing that narrative.”

For many in the region, the superhighway represents more than just a stretch of asphalt—it signals a renewed connection to the rest of the country and a leap toward the kind of economic growth that has long seemed just out of reach.

In a proactive move to uphold the aesthetic appeal and urban master plan of Abakaliki Capital City, the Ministry of Capital City and Urban Development has initiated the demolition of over 30 illegally constructed shops and containers within unauthorized areas of the metropolis.

The demolition exercise, which commenced at the Central Park axis, Ochudo Centenary City, was led by Chief Sunday Inyima, the Commissioner for Capital City Development. Inyima emphasized that the owners of the illegal structures were duly notified prior to the action.

Addressing the media, Commissioner Inyima highlighted the unauthorized nature of the structures, citing their encroachment upon designated service lanes without ministry approval.

Despite warnings issued to the owners since August 2023, no corrective action was taken, necessitating the intervention.

“In our effort to restore the city’s integrity, we cannot allow such violations to persist,” stated Commissioner Inyima. “These structures pose a threat to our urban planning objectives and must be removed.”

Regarding the financial implications, Commissioner Inyima affirmed that the ministry would cover the initial removal costs but would pursue further measures to ensure accountability for the final expenses incurred.

In response to queries about property ownership, Commissioner Inyima indicated that while some owners were identified and notified, others remained unknown. He stressed the importance of obtaining ministry approval before embarking on construction projects to prevent similar demolitions in the future.

Furthermore, Commissioner Inyima urged prospective developers to adhere to regulatory protocols and obtain requisite approvals to avoid legal ramifications.

“As we strive to elevate Abakaliki’s status among Nigeria’s cities, we must prioritize compliance with urban development guidelines,” Commissioner Inyima emphasized. “We will continue our efforts to eradicate unauthorized structures and safeguard our city’s aesthetics.”

The ministry’s actions underscore its commitment to maintaining orderliness and upholding urban planning standards in Abakaliki Capital City. As the demolition progresses, the ministry seeks public cooperation in ensuring the city’s sustainable development and enhancement.
