The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to rural development through enhanced electricity access during a meeting in Abuja.

Adelabu met with the Egyptian Ambassador to Nigeria, Mohammed Fouad, to discuss strengthening bilateral cooperation in energy sector expansion.

A statement from the minister’s spokesperson, Bolaji Tunji, confirmed that the meeting focused on renewable energy and rural electrification.

The minister commended Egypt’s achievements in power infrastructure, emphasizing Nigeria’s interest in adopting its energy generation and transmission model.

He highlighted Egypt’s progress in the energy sector, which influenced Nigeria’s engagement with Siemens to stabilize its power industry.

“Egypt has achieved significant milestones in energy transformation, and we want to collaborate and benefit from your expertise.”

Adelabu emphasized Nigeria’s goal to ensure stable, reliable, and affordable electricity access for all citizens across the country.

Nigeria’s Commitment to Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Expansion

Adelabu discussed Nigeria’s initiatives to connect rural communities to electricity through renewable energy due to economic grid expansion challenges.

“Many rural areas remain unconnected to the grid, but we cannot ignore them in our development plans,” he said.

He noted that Nigeria’s renewable energy programme had attracted major investments from international financial institutions for sector development.

Adelabu revealed that Nigeria secured $750 million from the World Bank’s DARES project and $190 million from Japan.

He stated that Nigeria has abundant renewable resources, including solar, wind, and hydro, crucial for sustainable national electricity generation.

The minister reiterated the government’s determination to harness these resources efficiently for nationwide electrification and economic development projects.

Egypt Expresses Readiness for Collaboration on Power Infrastructure

Ambassador Fouad expressed Egypt’s enthusiasm for strengthening energy collaboration with Nigeria and closing the country’s widening electricity metering gap.

He highlighted Egypt’s commitment to sharing expertise and best practices in power access, transmission, and energy infrastructure management.

“Nigeria and Egypt share many similarities, and cooperation in energy will bring mutual benefits for both nations’ economic growth,” Fouad stated.

He emphasized the immense potential in fostering stronger bilateral relations to achieve sustainable energy solutions for both African countries.

The meeting reaffirmed both governments’ commitment to advancing their partnership in power sector development and energy infrastructure modernization.

The WUF12 opening ceremony marked the start of a week of events co-led by UN-Habitat and its partners.

UN-Habitat Executive Director Anáclaudia Rossbach and Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, President of the Arab Republic of Egypt, delivered remarks at the ceremony, encouraging participants to take back insights and solutions to their communities.

Together, they announced the official opening of the five-day Forum, which will bring local and global perspectives on sustainable urban development.

Ahead of the official opening, five Assemblies convened to spotlight the perspectives of key stakeholder groups: grassroots organizations, children and youth, local and regional governments, women, and business and foundations. These assemblies gathered diverse voices to shape solutions for urban challenges, ensuring that the policies discussed at WUF12 represent the needs of people from all backgrounds.

Speaking for the Women’s Assembly, Kalpana Viswanath, CEO of Safetipin, reflected on how the WUF theme resonates with women. She emphasized that home is where resilience starts, noting that safe, inclusive homes foster well-being and build stronger, more equitable communities.

Ann Wanjiru Mbuthia, Coordinator of Mathare Legal Aid, who spoke on behalf of the Grassroots Assembly, highlighted the essential role of grassroots women as first responders within their communities. She discussed the importance of housing security, saying: “Housing is more than just a roof.” She explained that addressing housing will also address the issues of provision of basic services, livelihoods, climate change, adaptation, and building resilient communities.

Representing the Business and Foundations Assembly, Nasra Nanda, CEO of the Kenya Green Building Society, underscored the private sector’s power to catalyse sustainable urban change. She encouraged business leaders to support governments in creating long-term solutions, noting that “private-sector investment is essential for helping cities thrive.”

El-Gazzar stated, “In the past nine years, we have built 1.5 million housing units. We have worked to eliminate 357 unsafe areas by building more than 300,000 housing units at a construction cost exceeding 300 billion Egyptian pounds.”

He also mentioned the development of 24 new cities capable of accommodating 32 million people during this period. El-Gazzar attributed this increased urbanization to the country’s Decent Life Initiative, which has had a significant impact on economic development.

President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi attended the three-day conference along with representatives from various sectors of Egyptian society. The event included discussions highlighting the government’s achievements and addressing future challenges.

Transport Minister Kamel Al-Wazir highlighted the infrastructure improvements under the Decent Life Initiative, noting the construction of 7,000 km of new roads. He added that Egypt’s national road network now spans 30,000 km, serving agricultural and industrial areas across the country.

Upon completion of the development plan, Egypt’s ports are expected to have a capacity for 400 million tons of goods and 40 million containers, with the ability to handle 30,000 giant ships annually.

President El-Sisi commended the ministers for their efforts, stating that the success of the development program reflects the state’s commitment to serving the people.
