The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has ordered the immediate demolition of about 30 buildings blocking the Right of Way of Abuja’s Ring Road 3.

Wike gave the order on Thursday during an inspection of road projects linking Karsana District, Gwarinpa and the Kubwa axis.

The affected buildings sit within the corridor reserved for Ring Road 3 and its planned interchange. The area forms part of the infrastructure network covered by the Abuja Master Plan.

Wike Orders Immediate Action

The Acting Executive Secretary of the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), Richard Dauda, drew Wike’s attention to the structures during the inspection.

Dauda told the minister that the buildings occupy land reserved for the Ring Road 3 project. Wike then called officials of the Department of Development Control to the site.

The minister ordered the officials to remove the structures without delay. He also questioned how developers had managed to build within a major road and interchange corridor.

Wike said the government could not allow private buildings to obstruct important public infrastructure.

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has ordered an investigation into FCT officials linked to illegal approvals for car dealerships in Abuja.

The officials include Directors in the Departments of Parks and Recreation, Environmental Protection, Traffic Management and Urban Affairs.

The FCT Head of Service, Nancy Sabanti Nathan, has summoned the affected officials. The investigation will examine their role in approving the use of green areas, parks and gardens for car lots.

Wike also ordered the immediate end of car dealership activities on green areas and other spaces meant for public recreation.

The FCT Administration announced the decision in a statement issued on Wednesday. Lere Olayinka, the minister’s Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, signed the statement.

Task Force to Enforce Ban

The minister has also ordered the creation of a task force to enforce the directive.

Senator Ireti Kingibe, who represents the Federal Capital Territory, has accused the administration of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike of worsening Abuja’s flooding problems through developments she says have encroached on green areas, flood channels and flood plains.

Kingibe made the allegations while discussing the recent flooding recorded across parts of Abuja, arguing that some planning and development decisions have reduced the city’s capacity to manage heavy rainfall.

According to the senator, Abuja’s flooding problem predates the current FCT administration, but she believes the situation has become significantly worse over the past three to four years.

Residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) are beginning to enjoy some relief as the price of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), popularly known as cooking gas, has declined after months of sustained increases.

A market survey showed that LPG now sells for between N1,498 and N1,650 per kilogram across Abuja, depending on location and retail outlet, compared to recent highs of about N2,000 per kilogram recorded in several parts of the country.

The price reduction means that refilling a 5kg cylinder now costs between N7,490 and N8,250, while a 12.5kg cylinder costs between N18,725 and N20,625. At the peak of the recent price surge, the same cylinders cost approximately N10,000 and N25,000 respectively.

Despite the decline, some roadside vendors still sell cooking gas at prices as high as N1,850 per kilogram.

Industry experts attributed the price drop to improved product availability and easing wholesale costs but warned that long-term stability depends on addressing structural challenges in Nigeria’s LPG market.

Energy economist, Dr. Dayo Abegunde, said the reduction reflects improved supply conditions but noted that Nigeria remains vulnerable to global market shocks because a significant portion of domestic LPG consumption still depends on imports.

“The recent decline is encouraging for consumers, but Nigeria must deepen domestic production and strengthen its supply chain to avoid recurring price spikes whenever there are disruptions in the global market,” he said.

Oil and gas analyst, Edward Bulus, also stressed the need for increased domestic refining and retention of locally produced LPG within the Nigerian market to guarantee sustainable price stability.

LPG marketers confirmed that improved supply at coastal depots and a gradual decline in wholesale prices have contributed to the moderation in retail prices.

An Abuja-based LPG marketer, Bassey Etanem, said increased product availability is gradually filtering through the distribution chain, resulting in lower prices for consumers.

Retail operators in Abuja also attributed the decline to growing competition among filling plants as supply conditions improve.

However, marketers warned that transportation and logistics costs remain high, particularly for operators supplying inland locations, adding that investments in storage and distribution infrastructure are necessary to sustain lower prices.

Many consumers welcomed the reduction but argued that cooking gas remains expensive compared to previous years.

Some residents said they were forced to switch to charcoal and firewood when LPG prices approached N2,000 per kilogram.

A trader, Grace Bade, called on the government to implement measures that would further reduce the cost of cooking gas and ease the economic burden on households.

The recent price moderation follows intervention measures announced by the Federal Government to address supply shortages and market manipulation.

Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, directed the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), regulators and security agencies to intensify surveillance of the LPG market, investigate hoarding and diversion, and sanction operators found manipulating prices.

The minister said the government remains committed to increasing domestic LPG supply, reducing dependence on imports and ensuring that locally produced gas is prioritised for domestic consumption.

He also disclosed plans for a local LPG blending initiative involving Nigeria LNG Limited (NLNG), indigenous producers and operators of the Port Harcourt LPG plant to improve supply reliability and reduce logistics costs.

The NMDPRA had earlier linked the spike in cooking gas prices to global supply disruptions, exchange rate pressures, logistics bottlenecks and market inefficiencies.

Industry stakeholders, however, maintain that sustained affordability will depend on expanding domestic production, improving infrastructure and strengthening distribution networks across the country.

The Federal Ministry of Environment has warned that 26 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) may experience flooding between June 22 and July 5, 2026, following forecasts of heavy rainfall across several parts of the country.

The warning was issued on Monday through the National Flood Early Warning Centre under the ministry’s Erosion, Flood and Coastal Zone Management Department.

FG Identifies High-Risk and Critical Flood Zones

According to the advisory dated June 22, 2026, several communities across the country have been classified as either critical-risk or high-risk flood zones.

States listed under the critical-risk category include Abia, Adamawa, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Bayelsa, Benue, Cross River, Delta, Ebonyi, Edo, Ekiti, Enugu, Imo, Kogi, Kwara, Lagos, Niger, Ogun, Ondo, Osun, Oyo and Rivers.

Lagos, Rivers, Anambra, FCT Among Most Vulnerable Areas

The ministry identified numerous flood-prone communities likely to be affected by heavy rainfall and rising water levels.

In Lagos State, vulnerable areas include Agege, Alimosho, Apapa, Badagry, Ikeja, Ikorodu, Lagos Island, Lekki and Surulere.

In the FCT, high-risk areas include Abuja Municipal, Gwagwalada, Kubwa, Nyanya and Wuse.

Other identified locations include Onitsha and Awka (Anambra), Yenagoa (Bayelsa), Makurdi (Benue), Calabar (Cross River), Warri and Sapele (Delta), Enugu and Nsukka (Enugu), Owerri (Imo), Lokoja (Kogi), Ilorin (Kwara), and Port Harcourt (Rivers).

FG Issues Safety Advisory to Residents

The ministry urged residents in high-risk communities to take urgent precautionary measures to reduce potential impact.

It advised communities in critical zones to maintain flood watch, identify evacuation routes, and avoid building or trading in flood-prone areas.

“Communities classified as Critical should maintain immediate flood watch, identify evacuation routes, protect vulnerable households,” the advisory stated.

For high-risk areas, the ministry called for intensified drainage clearance, monitoring of waterways, and improved community reporting of rising water levels.

Rising Concern Over Seasonal Flooding

The warning comes amid the peak of Nigeria’s rainy season, raising concerns over possible displacement of residents, destruction of property, and disruption of economic activities in vulnerable areas.

Authorities have urged state governments and emergency agencies to step up preparedness measures to prevent avoidable losses.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening judicial independence and institutional reforms with the commissioning of a newly completed 10-unit Court of Appeal Judges’ Quarters in Katampe District, Abuja.

Represented by the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), the President described the project as a strategic investment in the rule of law, judicial welfare and democratic governance.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony on Tuesday, Tinubu said the housing estate formed part of a series of judicial infrastructure projects being inaugurated to mark the third anniversary of his administration.

According to the President, the project demonstrates the Federal Government’s commitment to providing the judiciary with the infrastructure and support required to effectively discharge its constitutional responsibilities.

“Today’s event is much more than the unveiling of physical infrastructure; it is a tangible demonstration of the Federal Government’s enduring commitment to the welfare, independence, efficiency and dignity of the judiciary,” he said.

Tinubu noted that the judges’ quarters were delivered as a special intervention project outside the statutory budgetary allocations to the judiciary, adding that improved welfare for judicial officers remains critical to strengthening justice delivery.

“The welfare of judicial officers is a strategic investment in the rule of law. When judges are provided with secure accommodation and conducive working environments, the entire nation benefits,” he stated.

The President also disclosed plans to expand judicial infrastructure within the Katampe district, revealing that additional land had been designated for judges of the Federal High Court, National Industrial Court, Code of Conduct Bureau and the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory.

He commended the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, for the successful execution of the project, describing him as diligent and result-oriented.

“And so today, we are back. We are back to close the circle. We are back to commission the Dape District Section of Arterial Road N5, from Life Camp Junction to Ring Road III,” he stated.

According to the President, the project was conceived, funded and completed under his administration after it was awarded to Julius Berger Plc and flagged off in October 2024 with a 15-month completion timeline.

Tinubu commended the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, for driving infrastructure delivery in the territory.

He described Wike as the administration’s “Engine of Execution” and praised Julius Berger for completing the project within schedule.

A three-storey residential building under construction collapsed on Saturday in the Durumi area of Abuja, near the popular Gudu Market, triggering a large-scale rescue operation by emergency responders.

A photojournalist at the scene reported that at least seven victims had been pulled from the rubble as of noon, with one person rescued alive.

Rescue operations were still ongoing at the time of filing this report, while authorities had yet to determine the total number of casualties.

According to Fasawe, the intervention was aimed at ensuring prompt medical care for everyone affected by the collapse.

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has dismissed reports suggesting that Channels Television purchased land in Abuja, insisting that the FCT Administration does not sell land but only allocates it under established procedures.

Wike made the clarification while reacting to claims that the media organisation had paid for land in the capital territory, an allegation that has sparked public debate over land administration practices in Abuja.

According to the minister, what Channels Television paid for was not the cost of land, but administrative charges linked to the processing of its Certificate of Occupancy (CofO).

“The money paid was to process their CofO, which is done regularly. Therefore, the land was allocated, not bought,” Wike said.

He explained that land allocation in the FCT follows standard government procedures and should not be misrepresented as commercial sales.

Wike further stressed that media organisations, like other corporate entities, operate as businesses and are expected to generate revenue to sustain their operations.

“Media organisations are not set up for charity; they are for business. That is why they do adverts and collect money,” he said.

He added that media houses earn income through advertising, sponsored content, live coverage, and commercial news services, all of which support their staffing and operational costs.
