Governor Umar Namadi of Jigawa State has called on the National Assembly to increase funding for the Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA) to enhance the condition of federal roads across Nigeria.

Speaking during a visit by members of the House of Representatives Committee on FERMA to the Government House in Dutse, the governor emphasized that inadequate funding has stalled the rehabilitation of key federal roads in the state.

He noted, “We are appealing for more financial support for FERMA. Effective road maintenance is central to national development, and current allocations are insufficient to meet the scale of work required.”

Namadi identified several deteriorating roads in Jigawa, including the Gumel–Megatari, Birnin Kudu–Gwaram, and Kafin Hausa–Kwanar Liman–Hadejia routes. According to him, these road conditions not only hinder economic activities but also pose safety risks to commuters.

Highlighting his administration’s achievements, he revealed that 25 out of 26 inherited road projects—spanning 330 kilometers—had been completed as of December last year. He added that 47 new projects covering 970 kilometers are underway to improve mobility and stimulate economic growth.

Chairman of the House Committee on FERMA, Hon. Aderemi Abbas Oseni, praised the state government for its road development efforts and commended Namadi’s leadership.

“From what we’ve seen, Jigawa is setting a good example in infrastructure delivery. The governor has demonstrated commendable commitment and resource management,” Oseni said.

He added that the committee’s visit aimed to assess the status of federal roads in the state and evaluate progress on awarded contracts in line with the 2024/2025 budget. He assured that Jigawa’s road concerns would be factored into the 2026 federal appropriation to help close funding gaps at FERMA.

On October 27, Oseni chided Umahi during an interactive session, saying he had failed to address the poor condition of roads in Nigeria.

He argued that Umahi’s claim of lacking resources was unfounded.

“You are not here to tell us what we already know in the area of resources. So, if you are telling us the reason you have failed in fixing our road infrastructure is because of resources — don’t let me take you up on that because you concentrated your energy as a minister on less priority issues,” Oseni said.

Last year, you got N300 billion supplementary budget approval. Don’t raise my emotions. I am worried that you are not concerned about fixing Nigerian roads.”

Addressing journalists in Abuja on Monday, Umahi said he had refrained from engaging with Oseni out of respect for Tajudeen Abbas, speaker of the house.

His (Oseni) time is very damaging to the wonderful institution of the National Assembly, especially the 10th national assembly,” Umahi said.

For the respect of the Speaker and of course the Senate President and the National Assembly institution that I belong to, I will refrain myself from joining issues with him.

He said I have failed… No one in life ever said I have failed and I have never failed in anything I am involved in and if he likes he should go and check my pedigree.

I believe that God has to be with him to attain half of what I have attained in life. So, I will not join issues with him because I have tremendous respect for Mr Speaker and the National Assembly.”

Umahi also acknowledged that he had been involved in certain issues, agreeing with Oseni, but noted that price variations have strained the budget.

During a courtesy visit from FHA’s Managing Director/CEO, Honourable Oyetunde Oladimeji Ojo, in Abuja, FERMA’s Managing Director/CEO, Engineer Chukwuemeka Agbasi, pledged that the agency would ensure that these roads become motorable.

Agbasi revealed that a team would be constituted to assess the scope of the rehabilitation work, and the project would be included in the 2025 budget appropriation. Additionally, FERMA will explore alternative funding sources to expedite the process.

Highlighting the long-term benefits of the partnership, Agbasi expressed optimism about improving service delivery for Nigerians. He also pointed to the opportunity for FERMA to develop its land, creating a mutually beneficial relationship with the FHA.

The FERMA MD acknowledged the proposal for collaboration from FHA’s Ojo, noting that it aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritizes housing and road infrastructure development. He stressed the importance of leveraging public-private partnerships (PPPs) to address funding gaps in critical infrastructure projects.

“The Federal Government’s limited capacity to fully fund infrastructure projects has made PPPs an essential solution. This approach will help FERMA bridge funding gaps, generate new revenue streams, and deliver critical infrastructure efficiently,” Agbasi said.

Earlier, FHA’s Ojo emphasized the importance of the partnership in fulfilling President Tinubu’s agenda of providing affordable housing. He urged FERMA to prioritize the rehabilitation of roads leading to key FHA estates, especially in Gwarimpa and Lugbe in Abuja, and Festac in Lagos.

“Accessible roads are crucial for the success of housing projects, and FERMA’s support will allow FHA to focus on delivering affordable housing to Nigerians, including FERMA staff, who will benefit from these projects,” Ojo remarked.

Ojo also commended FERMA’s maintenance of roads in Ekiti State and estates in Gwarimpa, FCT, and Kano State.

In a related development, Agbasi inaugurated the FERMA Integrated Project Delivery Team (FIPDT), a strategic initiative aimed at addressing infrastructure funding challenges through PPPs
