Suspected gunmen on Friday reportedly abducted a school principal and an unspecified number of students of a secondary school in Ahoro Esinele, Oriire Local Government Area (LGA) of Oyo state.

Blueprint.ng gathered that the gunmen reportedly stormed Community High School, Ahoro-Esinele between 8am – 9am during which a teacher in the school was also shot.

Sources said the Principal, identified as Mrs Rachael Alamu was reportedly drove out of the school in her car by the gunmen and later escaped into a forest reserve that borders the community.

Reliable Police source said as at the time of sending this story, the Oyo state Commissioner of Police is on the way to Ahoro Esinele with his team to ascertain the situation.

Recently, insecurity has heightened in Oyo state with victims being killed and kidnapped in parts of the state.

Gunmen on Sunday attacked a church service in Kwara State, abducting several worshippers during a violent raid in Ifelodun Local Government Area.

The incident occurred at the Evangelical Church Winning All in Omugo community, where congregants had gathered for their regular Sunday worship.

Eyewitnesses said the attackers stormed the church and fired sporadically, causing panic and forcing worshippers to flee.

Amid the chaos, eight persons were reportedly abducted by the gunmen.

Victims Escape, Others Still Held

In a development that followed the attack, three of the abducted victims managed to escape from captivity, while five others remain in the custody of the assailants.

The incident adds to growing concerns over insecurity in parts of the state, particularly attacks on places of worship and rural communities.

Government Reacts

The Kwara State Government condemned the attack, describing it as disturbing and unacceptable.

In a statement by the Commissioner for Communications, Bolanle Olukoju, the government commended security operatives, forest guards, and local vigilantes for their swift response, which helped facilitate the escape of some victims.

Authorities have launched efforts to rescue the remaining abductees and apprehend those responsible.

Confusion has trailed reports of the alleged abduction of more than 170 worshippers during coordinated attacks on three churches in Kajuru Local Government Area of Kaduna State, with conflicting accounts from religious leaders and security agencies.

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the 19 Northern states said terrorists attacked churches in the Kurmin Wali community on Sunday, firing sporadically to scare residents before abducting worshippers during service.

Chairman of CAN in the region, Rev. Joseph John Hayab, described the incident as distressing, stating that information available to the association indicated that about 172 worshippers were taken by the attackers.

“I don’t like talking about figures, but what we got from the area is that 172 people were abducted. Nine reportedly escaped, while about 163 are still being held by the abductors,” Hayab said.

He added that CAN was working closely with security agencies and the government to ensure the safe return of the victims, stressing that the church would not be discouraged despite the incident.

Local residents also claimed the attacks were coordinated, alleging that the assailants arrived in large numbers, surrounded the worship centres and whisked congregants, including women and youths, into nearby forests. Some elderly victims were reportedly released later.

However, the Kaduna State Police Command dismissed the reports, describing them as false and misleading.

Speaking to journalists after a State Security Council meeting at Sir Kashim Ibrahim House, the Commissioner of Police, Muhammad Rabiu, said no kidnapping took place in Kajuru.

“The story is a mere falsehood. Anyone claiming people were kidnapped should come forward with names and particulars of the alleged victims,” Rabiu said, warning that purveyors of false information would face the full weight of the law.

The chairman of Kajuru Local Government Area, Mr Dauda Madaki, also denied the incident, saying security agencies immediately visited the affected communities and churches following the reports but found no evidence of any attack.

“When the rumour reached me, I mobilised security personnel to Kurmin Wali. We visited the church where the incident was said to have occurred and found no trace of any kidnapping,” Madaki said.

According to him, the village head and youth leader of the community also confirmed that no worshippers were abducted, adding that no individual had been able to provide the names of any missing persons.

Kaduna State Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Mr Sule Shuaibu, SAN, said investigations and consultations with religious leaders, including CAN officials, showed that the reports circulating in the public space were unfounded.

He reaffirmed the state government’s zero tolerance for criminality and urged residents to remain calm, report suspicious activities, and avoid spreading unverified information.

Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) described the alleged abduction as a serious indictment of the country’s security architecture, calling on the Federal Government to take decisive action to protect worshippers and prevent further attacks on religious centres.

Efforts to get confirmation from defence authorities were unsuccessful as of press time.

The attack, which took place around 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, forced residents to flee en masse to nearby communities, including Bashar, as fear and uncertainty spread across the area.

According to the community’s traditional ruler, Abdulbari’u Muhammad, the attackers stormed the village on motorcycles, looting food items, clothing, and motorcycles before setting homes on fire. Among those abducted were two of his palace aides, Waziri and Wakili, the latter being his younger brother.

“We are completely confused and don’t know what to do, which is why we fled to Bashar,” the traditional ruler lamented. “Everybody has left because people are afraid to remain in the area.”

Residents say the violence may be connected to a recent clash between local vigilantes and suspected bandits, which left several vigilantes dead and multiple houses destroyed.

One of the displaced residents, Abubakar Zubairu, said the entire community was deserted by Thursday morning in the aftermath of the assault. “Everyone is leaving. There’s no one left in the village right now,” he said.

Muhammad appealed to the government for immediate deployment of security forces to the area to allow displaced residents to return and tend to their farmlands. “Our crops have been planted, and we are deeply worried. We need security so we can go back to our farms and secure our livelihoods,” he pleaded.

As of press time, security agencies including Operation Safe Haven and the Plateau State Police Command had yet to issue an official statement on the incident.

The latest attack underscores the growing insecurity in parts of Plateau State and raises fresh concerns over the safety of rural communities amid ongoing efforts to restore peace.

Gunmen have killed the Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Plateau State, Sylvanus Namang.

Namang and one other were reportedly shot dead at a pub in the Pankshin Local Government Area of Plateau State, north-central Nigeria.

An official of the party, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed the incident to Punch Online, saying the APC spokesman died from injuries sustained in the attack.

“Yes, it’s true. We have lost our spokesman, Sylvanus Namang. From what I was told, he went to Pankshin for a burial on Saturday. Afterwards, he went to buy something at an eatery in the locality.

“Suddenly, some armed people came to the place and shot at him and one other person. He later succumbed to the injuries sustained and died.

“I learnt that the other victim, who is said to be a businessman, also died from the gunshot wounds,” the source said.

Gunmen on Thursday night invaded Hilltop Phase 2 Extension of the Nigerian Army Post-Housing Estate and kidnapped a popular businesswoman.

Our Source learnt that the heavily armed men invaded the area around 9 pm, shooting sporadically to scare residents.

It was gathered that despite the presence of soldiers in the estate, the kidnappers went away with the woman through the hillside.

A source told our reporter that the kidnappers had targeted the victim’s husband but missed him.

The source said, “Yesterday at about 9 pm, some kidnappers entered this estate and kidnapped a woman at the Hilltop Extension.

“The target was the husband but they couldn’t get him as he was not around, but as the woman was driving into her compound, they got her.

“As her son started shouting, they too started shooting.

“They went away with her through the hillside.
