The Lagos State Ministry of Housing has engaged residents of government-owned housing estates in Ikorodu as part of efforts to address challenges and improve living conditions.

The stakeholders’ meeting, held at Oba Adeboruwa Housing Estate, brought together residents and government officials to discuss pressing issues affecting the estates.

Commitment to improving living standards

Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Abdulhafis Toriola, said the engagement was aimed at gathering direct feedback from residents and finding practical solutions to their concerns.

He acknowledged that challenges are common in growing communities but assured residents of the government’s commitment to resolving them.

According to him, the ministry plans to make the engagement a monthly exercise to ensure consistent communication and progress.

Residents urged to follow regulations

Mr. Toriola also advised residents to comply with existing rules guiding government housing estates, stressing the importance of adhering to both state and national laws.

Director of the estate department, Olukemi Fosudo, explained that such meetings are part of ongoing efforts to maintain and sustain government estates.

She noted that the engagement covered six estates in Ikorodu, including Oba Adeboruwa, Prince Abiodun Ogunleye, Babatunde Olushola Benson (Ibeshe), Millennium (Oke Eletu), Jubilee (Ayangburen), and Millennium (Ibeshe).

Residents acknowledge improvements

Chairman of the Community Development Association in Oba Adeboruwa Estate, Hammed Bolaji, commended the government for recent improvements, including repairs to the main gate and repainting of buildings.

However, he appealed for additional support, particularly in providing healthcare facilities, recreational centres, and event spaces.

Key concerns raised

During the meeting, residents highlighted issues such as poor drainage systems, which the government promised to address promptly.

Officials from the Lagos State Waste Management Authority advised against improper waste disposal practices, including burning of refuse.

Fire service representatives also educated residents on safety measures, while the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control urged parents to monitor their children to prevent drug abuse.

Additionally, LASACO Assurance Plc sensitised residents on the importance of insuring their properties.

Residents of the Odo-Kekere community in Ikorodu, Lagos State, were on Thursday evening thrown into panic following the partial collapse of a public school building in the area.

The incident, which occurred after school hours, has been described by residents as a case of divine intervention, as no casualties were recorded.

Eyewitnesses said a section of the aging school structure suddenly gave way with a loud bang, sending dust into the air and drawing residents and passersby to the scene.

Emergency responders from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) and the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) promptly arrived at the location and cordoned off the affected area to prevent further danger.

As of press time, the cause of the collapse and the extent of structural damage were still under investigation. Preliminary findings confirmed that students were not in their classrooms at the time of the incident.

Rescue teams were also said to be conducting search and safety operations to ensure that no security personnel or staff members were trapped beneath the rubble.

An eyewitness and nearby resident, Mrs. Boluwaji Aderinto, whose building is adjacent to the school, expressed concern over the safety of public school infrastructure in the area.

“We heard a loud crack and then everywhere was dusty. We thank God it didn’t happen during school hours when children would have been inside the classrooms. This should be a wake-up call for the government,” she said.

According to her, parents and community leaders had previously appealed to authorities to renovate deteriorating school buildings within the axis, warning of potential danger.

As relentless rains continue to batter large swathes of the country, the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NiHSA) has issued a stark warning: heavy flooding is projected to hit 198 local government areas across 31 states and the Federal Capital Territory between August 7 and 21, 2025.

The alert comes just 24 hours after the Federal Ministry of Environment’s National Flood Early Warning Systems Centre cautioned residents in 19 states to brace for potentially life-threatening inundations.

In its latest bulletin, NiHSA categorised the risk levels based on rainfall intensity and local topography. States on the watchlist include Adamawa, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Benue, Borno, Cross River, Delta, Ebonyi, Edo, the FCT, Gombe, Imo, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kebbi, Kogi, Kwara, Lagos, Nasarawa, Niger, Ogun, Ondo, Plateau, Rivers, Sokoto, Taraba, Yobe, and Zamfara.

More than 832 communities have been identified as vulnerable, with over 100 key transportation routes at risk of disruption. Low-lying settlements, NiHSA warned, face the greatest threat of displacement.

Mohammed called on state and local authorities to deploy proactive measures, assuring that NiHSA would continue to monitor developments and provide real-time updates through official channels and State Emergency Management Agencies.

In Lagos, the state government has expressed sympathy to Ikorodu residents reeling from Monday’s marathon downpour, which submerged parts of the metropolis and caused widespread property damage.

Special Adviser on Environment, Engr. Olakunle Rotimi-Akodu, said the scale of rainfall was “a once-in-decades event” and reiterated the administration’s commitment to completing critical drainage infrastructure to mitigate recurring floods.

“Climate change is real. We are fast-tracking construction projects to reduce the pain and address the root causes of flooding in Ikorodu,” Rotimi-Akodu said during an on-site inspection.

He urged residents to avoid dumping waste into drains and encroaching on road rights-of-way, warning that human-induced blockages exacerbate flooding risks.

Commissioner for Special Duties, Gbenga Oyerinde, noted that a preliminary damage assessment was underway to inform humanitarian interventions. Inspection teams visited several sites, including Gberigbe Road Outfall Channel, Palm Avenue Collector Drain, and communities in Ijede and Igbogbo.

Meanwhile, Labour Party’s 2023 Lagos governorship candidate, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, criticised the state government’s advice for flood-affected Ikorodu residents to vacate their homes.

In a statement by his aide, Adewole Ireti, Rhodes-Vivour described the directive as “a callous abdication of duty” and said government should prioritise emergency relief, not eviction orders.

“Development is not about bridges and flyovers alone; it is about people the woman who lost her shop, the children who slept on wet floors, the families with nowhere to go,” the statement read.

The Lagos State Catfish and Allied Farmers Association (LASCAFAN) has also reported catastrophic losses exceeding ₦150 million following the floods.

Vice President Olatoye Fajimi said over 50 farms in Ikorodu were affected, with thousands of fish swept away overnight by torrents.

“It has been a tale of woes. Farms that had never flooded before were overrun this time. By the time farmers arrived in the morning, most of their stock had been washed into gutters and canals,” Fajimi lamented.

The association is appealing for urgent government intervention to salvage what remains of the sector.

With hundreds of communities on high alert and climate extremes intensifying, Nigeria’s flood preparedness will face a critical test in the coming fortnight.
