President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday appointed Tunji Disu as Acting Inspector-General of Police (IGP), following the resignation of Kayode Egbetokun. Mr Disu’s appointment comes just 48 days before he would have reached the mandatory retirement age of 60.
Mr Disu’s appointment comes just 48 days before he would have reached the mandatory retirement age of 60.

Appointment Close to Retirement

Born on 13 April 1966, Mr Disu enlisted in the Nigeria Police Force on 18 May 1992.

Under existing police regulations, officers must retire upon reaching 60 years of age or completing 35 years of service, whichever comes first. Without the new appointment, Mr Disu would have retired in April 2026 upon attaining the age limit.

Although he will only complete 35 years in service in May 2027, his elevation to the position of IGP entitles him to a statutory four-year tenure, unless he resigns or is removed by the president.

Similar Precedent Under Egbetokun

A similar situation occurred under Mr Egbetokun, who was appointed the 22nd IGP on 19 June 2023. Though initially set to retire upon attaining 60 years, amendments to the Police Act by the National Assembly now allow an Inspector-General to complete a four-year tenure regardless of age or years of service.

Mr Egbetokun’s appointment was confirmed by the Nigeria Police Council in October 2023, and he was expected to remain in office until October 2027 before resigning on Tuesday.

Who Is Tunji Disu?

Mr Disu is a career police officer with over three decades of operational and leadership experience.

Born on Lagos Island, he holds:

He has undergone professional training in areas including small arms smuggling, internet fraud, forensic intelligence and strategic leadership, both locally and internationally.

Career Highlights

Mr Disu has served in multiple strategic roles across the country, including:

Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in various states

In 2005, he led Nigeria’s first police contingent to the African Union Mission in Sudan (AMIS), serving as Acting Chief of Staff in Darfur.

Before his latest appointment, he was attached to the Special Protection Unit (SPU) at Force Headquarters, Abuja, before being posted to Lagos earlier this month.

What the Appointment Means

Mr Disu’s appointment marks a significant leadership transition within the Nigeria Police Force. With a four-year tenure now in view, he is expected to oversee ongoing reforms, internal restructuring and national security coordination efforts.

The development also reinforces the impact of amendments to the Police Act, which now allow an IGP to complete a full four-year term irrespective of age limitations.

A tenant residing in Ilupeju, Lagos, has petitioned the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, over what he describes as an unlawful attempt to forcibly remove him from his residence by a property buyer allegedly acting in concert with law enforcement officers.

Vincent Uba, the tenant, made the appeal through his legal representative, Ogedi Ogu, requesting an immediate investigation into the alleged intimidation, harassment, and disruption of residence at 5, Association Avenue, Ilupeju.

According to the petition, events escalated on May 28, 2025, when an individual claiming ownership of the building reportedly entered the premises without prior notice, damaged the property’s gates, and blocked all access points by offloading truckloads of sand, effectively trapping residents inside and outside the compound.

The lawyer alleged that efforts to reach the purported new owner during the standoff were unsuccessful. He also claimed that police officers were involved in the operation, acting on a petition reportedly submitted by the Oyo State Ministry of Justice and the said buyer, demanding vacant possession of the property.

Ogu said two tenants were taken in for questioning by the police and were only released after posting bail. “They were treated like criminals,” he added, noting the psychological toll the incident had on his client, who also runs a business on the premises.

He further reported that upon Uba’s return from the police station, he found the gates forcibly broken and heaps of sand dumped at the building’s entrances, worsening the disruption.

In a related development, Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke of the Federal High Court has issued an order directing all parties involved in the dispute to maintain the status quo. The interim ruling came in response to a suit filed by Uba, who is seeking to enforce his fundamental human rights and restrain further interference until the court has heard and determined the substantive application.

The Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to stay away from the River Park Estate dispute.

Justice Obiora Egwuatu gave the ruling on Friday. He also barred other parties in the suit from taking any actions that could interfere with the ongoing legal process.

The judge warned all involved not to take steps that could pre-empt the court’s decision. The case was then adjourned to June 26, 2025, for the next hearing.

The case was filed by Ghanaian investors. They include JonahCapital Ltd, Houses for Africa Ltd, and three individuals: Samuel Esson Jonah, Kojo Ansah Mensah, and Victor Quainoo. Their lawyer, Abu Arome, filed the suit on their behalf.

They asked the court to stop the police, EFCC, and other parties from arresting or intimidating them during the investigation. The investors claimed that their rights were being violated.

The conflict started with multiple petitions regarding ownership of River Park Estate. In response, the IGP created a Special Investigation Panel (SIP) to examine the complaints.

After weeks of investigation, the panel submitted its report to the police leadership. The report was supposed to be reviewed by the legal department to check for any criminal elements.

Despite this, the investors said they received no reply after sending follow-up letters dated March 20 and April 16. Instead, a new investigation allegedly began under DCP Akin Fakorede, head of the IGP Monitoring Unit.

The investors stated that even while the matter was still in court, they were being summoned and harassed. Fakorede allegedly continued to investigate the case, ignoring the findings of the earlier panel.

They also accused the EFCC of arresting and detaining Kojo Ansah Mensah, the CEO of JonahCapital and Houses for Africa Nigeria. He was reportedly held for several days without clear cause.

Due to the situation, the investors petitioned the Police Service Commission, led by Hashimu Argungu. They also wrote to the Attorney-General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, SAN. Both were asked to intervene in what the investors called abuse of power.

The plaintiffs are asking the court for a perpetual injunction. This would stop the police and EFCC from arresting, inviting, harassing, or detaining them.

They argue that the investigation is based on agreements signed years ago on June 1, 2012, and July 13, 2012 which have already been addressed.

They also want the SIP investigation report to be released. The panel was led by DCP Usman Ahmed Imam from the Force Criminal Investigation Department.

In addition, the investors are demanding ₦200 million in damages for alleged violations of their rights.

The matter will be heard again on June 26, 2025, at the Federal High Court in Abuja.
