The Kebbi State Government says the construction of 250 housing units under the Kauran Gwandu Housing Project has reached 80 per cent completion.

Governor Nasir Idris disclosed this on Tuesday while inspecting the project site on the outskirts of Birnin Kebbi.

The governor expressed satisfaction with the progress of work and commended the contractor for adhering to the approved specifications.

Idris, however, warned contractors handling government projects across the state against compromising standards.

“I am happy about the performance of the contractor, but let me sound a word of warning that Kebbi State Government will not condone shoddy job from any contractor engaged in project execution.”

Kebbi targets timely completion

The governor expressed confidence that the 250 housing units would be completed within the stipulated timeframe, paving the way for their allocation to prospective occupants.

He said the project was part of his administration’s efforts to provide decent and affordable accommodation for residents of the state.

Kebbi buys Federal Government housing units

Idris also disclosed that his administration had purchased the Federal Government’s housing units in Birnin Kebbi.

According to him, payment for the estate had been completed and the necessary documents acquired by the state government.

He said the government would soon award a contract for the completion of the estate.

“Very soon, the state government will award the contract for completion of the estate in furtherance of action by my administration to provide requisite and decent accommodation to our people.”

The governor urged contractors working on government projects to maintain quality standards and ensure timely delivery.

Commissioner for Works, Alhaji Abdullahi Umar-Muslim, refuted the claim while addressing journalists in Birnin Kebbi on Thursday, March 21, 2025.

The project was awarded to Amirco Engineering for N7.23 billion and is being executed according to agreed engineering standards and specifications.

A publication alleged that culverts were built using blocks instead of reinforced concrete, misrepresenting project specifications entirely.

Umar-Muslim clarified that the culverts were constructed using machine-pressed blocks, which meet all global engineering safety standards.

He explained that government engineers are monitoring the project closely, ensuring strict compliance with all contract terms and conditions.

The project includes road scarification, excavation, embankment filling, stone pitching, and construction of block-lined drains on both sides.

A detailed financial breakdown shows N6.82 billion for civil works, N63.9 million for water relocation, and N339.9 million compensation.

Umar-Muslim criticized the report for being misleading, failing to give fair hearing, and attempting to damage Governor Nasir Idris’ reputation.
