The prompt intervention helped protect lives, nearby businesses, and surrounding properties from extensive damage.

According to the Kwara State Fire Service, the tanker, carrying approximately 45,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), developed a mechanical fault while in transit before crashing near a filling station along the Oko-Olowo Expressway in Ilorin. Emergency responders arrived promptly after receiving a distress call and immediately commenced firefighting operations.

Firefighters successfully contained the fuel spill and extinguished the fire before it could spread to the filling station or nearby structures. Their timely response prevented what authorities described as a potential large-scale disaster in the busy commercial area. No fatalities were recorded during the incident, although traffic was temporarily disrupted while emergency operations were underway.

The Director of the Kwara State Fire Service commended the professionalism and rapid response of emergency personnel, noting that adherence to safety procedures played a crucial role in preventing a catastrophic explosion. He also urged motorists transporting petroleum products to ensure their vehicles are mechanically sound before embarking on journeys to reduce the risk of similar incidents.

Safety experts have repeatedly warned that mechanical failures, poor vehicle maintenance, and inadequate compliance with transport safety regulations remain major contributors to tanker-related accidents across Nigeria. They called for stricter enforcement of road safety standards, regular vehicle inspections, and improved emergency preparedness to minimise future incidents.

The incident underscores the importance of efficient emergency response systems and continued investment in fire safety infrastructure to safeguard communities, critical facilities, and commercial centres from fire-related disasters

The incident occurred around 3:28 p.m. at Face Two of the estate and affected a residential structure comprising about eight-bedroom flats.

According to the Kwara State Fire Service, the inferno damaged sections of the building, particularly the sitting room and dining area, before firefighters successfully brought the situation under control.

In a statement issued by the spokesperson for the agency, Hassan Hakeem Adekunle, the Fire Service said emergency responders acted swiftly after receiving a distress call, preventing the flames from spreading to other sections of the property and nearby buildings.

“The incident involved a residential building consisting of about eight-bedroom flats. The fire affected the sitting room and dining area of the building,” the statement noted.

It added that firefighters responded promptly and contained the situation before it escalated into a larger disaster within the estate.

Preliminary findings by the agency linked the incident to a power surge, a common factor associated with several domestic fire outbreaks across the country.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that the cause of the fire was attributed to a power surge. No casualty was recorded during the incident,” the agency stated.

The Kwara State Fire Service said no lives were lost, while residents expressed relief following the quick intervention of emergency personnel.

Reacting to the incident, the Director of the Kwara State Fire Service urged residents to adopt stronger electrical safety practices in homes and workplaces.

The agency advised members of the public to switch off electrical appliances when not in use and ensure electrical installations are properly maintained to reduce risks associated with faulty wiring and sudden power fluctuations.

The Fire Service also appealed to residents to remain safety conscious and promptly report emergencies to the nearest fire station for rapid intervention.

Commuters travelling along the Ilorin–Igbeti Federal Highway in Kwara State were stranded on Monday after heavy flooding overtook the already collapsed Moro Bridge, submerging vehicles and worsening disruption along the critical interstate route.

The incident reportedly followed an overnight downpour that caused the Moro River to overflow its banks, trapping several vehicles in floodwaters and leaving passengers stranded as they waited for rescue.

The affected bridge, located between Oko-Olowo/Mandala in Ilorin West and Asa Local Government Areas, had collapsed on April 30 after a heavy-duty articulated truck reportedly crossed the aging structure.

Flooding Deepens Transportation Crisis

The bridge collapse had already disrupted a major transport corridor linking Kwara State to neighbouring Oyo State and routes extending toward the Benin Republic border.

Monday’s flooding further complicated the situation as a temporary diversion route earlier promised by the state government had yet to be completed.

Video footage from the scene showed partially submerged vehicles struggling through the flooded area while stranded travellers attempted to navigate the rising water levels.

Residents Raise Concerns Over Delayed Intervention

Motorists and residents expressed frustration over delays in completing emergency works around the bridge, warning that conditions could worsen as the rainy season intensifies.

A trader identified as Kafayat said the incident had already affected business activities and increased transportation costs.

“This development has negatively affected economic activities, causing delays and increasing transportation costs for commuters and businesses,” she said.

Residents also questioned why an alternative bridge project situated beside the collapsed structure had remained unfinished for years.

Fears Grow Ahead of Peak Rainfall Season

Communities around the Moro River axis warned that heavier rainfall expected in July and August could trigger more severe flooding if urgent intervention measures are not implemented.

Following the bridge collapse in April, Kwara authorities introduced traffic diversion plans and promised immediate actions to ease hardship.

The Commissioner for Works, Abdulquawiy Olododo, had stated that the state government was collaborating with federal authorities to address the crisis.

He explained that engineers had been mobilised to carry out palliative work on alternative routes while assuring residents that construction of a new bridge a few metres from the collapsed structure was ongoing.

Aging Bridge Under Fresh Scrutiny

The Moro Bridge, a colonial-era Bailey bridge, has served as a key transport link connecting parts of Kwara and Oyo states for decades.

However, the structure has repeatedly undergone rehabilitation due to persistent structural defects, raising fresh concerns over infrastructure maintenance and public safety.
