Minister of Transportation, Said Alkali, has announced federal plans to create a new National Integrated Land Transport Policy, aligning with modern needs and realities.

Speaking at the Kano State transport policy dialogue yesterday, Alkali highlighted the policy’s goal to establish an organized, efficient, competitive, and sustainable multimodal transport system driven by the private sector. This new policy aims to enhance the nation’s transport infrastructure to support a growing economy and population.

Alkali emphasized, “Transportation is not just about moving people, goods, and services. It also significantly impacts the wellbeing of other economic sectors such as industry, commerce, education, healthcare, agriculture, security, and tourism.” He noted that the global performance and development index of economies are often graded based on the effectiveness of their transportation systems and regulatory frameworks.

He praised Kano State for recognizing the importance of a robust transportation policy. “Kano State is on the path to greatness by developing a policy framework that addresses the relevant issues necessary for an effective transportation system,” Alkali added.

Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, represented by Deputy Governor Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo, highlighted the state government’s efforts in improving transportation infrastructure. “We have reconstructed numerous roads, overhead, and underpass bridges, reducing traffic congestion in the cosmopolitan city,” he said.

Commissioner for Transportation, Muhammad Ibrahim Diggol, emphasized that the Kano Transport dialogue is a significant step towards achieving a multi-modal transport system in line with global best practices. “Reforming the transportation sector is imperative given Kano’s transport challenges, similar to those faced by Lagos and other emerging mega cities in the country,” he added.

The dialogue marks a critical move towards shaping the future of transportation in Kano State, aiming to align with international standards and practices.
