Following President Boakai’s brief remarks at the event, Trump turned to the visiting leader and asked, “Where did you learn to speak so beautifully? Where were you educated?” The American president added, “Thank you, and such good English.”

President Boakai, a fluent English speaker and business graduate educated in Liberia, responded modestly, though his subdued tone and body language his face turned away from the press, suggested discomfort at the question.

Trump, seated among several Francophone West African leaders, continued with the commentary, remarking, “It’s beautiful English. I have people at this table who can’t speak nearly as well.”

Liberia, a country with deep historical ties to the United States, was founded in the 19th century by freed African Americans under the auspices of the American Colonization Society. Declaring independence in 1847, these settlers known as Americo-Liberians established a government that would dominate national politics for over a century.

Today, English remains the official language of Liberia and is used in government, education, and commerce. The nation is also home to a multitude of indigenous languages, including Kpelle the most widely spoken along with Mende and Kissi. President Boakai himself is literate in both Mende and Kissi, though he, like most Liberians, primarily communicates in English.

The exchange underscored cultural gaps and drew quiet criticism for its tone, highlighting the need for greater awareness in international diplomacy.

On Thursday, a delegation of Liberian parliamentarians and environmental experts met with Nigerian lawmakers to explore ways to mitigate the devastating effects of climate change in both nations.

Led by Mr. Ernest Manseah Snr, the Liberian delegation engaged in discussions with Nigeria’s National Assembly Committees on Ecology and Climate Change. The visit aimed to understand Nigeria’s strategies in tackling climate challenges and to foster cross-border collaboration.

“Nigeria has taken significant steps in addressing climate change, and we are here to learn from these efforts,” Manseah stated. “Beyond setting up a Climate Fund in Liberia, we want to adopt practical solutions that have proven effective here.”

Senator Seriake Dickson, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Ecology and Climate Change, welcomed the delegation, emphasizing the need for African nations to work together.

“Nigeria has set the pace with a comprehensive climate change law—the first of its kind in Africa,” Dickson noted. “But no country can fight this battle alone. We need strong partnerships to drive impactful solutions.”

He assured the Liberian delegation of Nigeria’s commitment to knowledge exchange and expressed interest in strengthening ties through reciprocal visits and policy-sharing initiatives.

As both nations grapple with rising temperatures, deforestation, and extreme weather events, this partnership marks a step toward a more coordinated and resilient climate response in West Africa.

Speaking at an event in Lagos on Friday, Jeff Blibo, Chairman of the Republic of Liberia National Investment Commission (NIC), outlined Liberia’s unique advantages, including a dual currency system (transactions in both Liberian and US dollars), 100% profit repatriation, and tax exemptions.

Economic Potential in Agriculture and Infrastructure
Blibo emphasized the significant growth potential of Liberia’s agricultural sector, describing it as a cornerstone of the nation’s economy. He noted ongoing government efforts to enhance infrastructure, streamline land use policies, and improve market access to support smallholder farmers and agribusinesses.

“Our government is committed to creating an investor-friendly environment and positioning Liberia as a hub for economic innovation in West Africa,” he stated.

Tourism and Cultural Heritage
Christopher Onanuga, Liberia’s presidential special envoy on tourism, highlighted the nation’s breathtaking landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and diverse wildlife as pillars for sustainable tourism development. He encouraged Nigerian investors to seize these opportunities, positioning Liberia as a premier West African tourist destination.

Strengthening Nigeria-Liberia Economic Ties
While acknowledging international interest from Chinese and Indian investors, Blibo expressed concern over the limited involvement of Nigerian investors in Liberia. He urged Nigerian business leaders to take advantage of the mutual benefits of closer economic collaboration between the two nations.

“Liberia is a land of immense promise,” Blibo said, encouraging Nigerian investors to unlock Liberia’s potential and contribute to its development goals.

Themed Event Promotes Intra-African Trade
The event, themed “Discover Liberia: Exploring Liberia Investment Opportunities 2025”, was organized by CDIM and Precut Collection in collaboration with the Liberian government. Mohammed M. Bah, Liberia’s presidential special envoy on investments, described the country as a “green land” rich with investment prospects.

“We believe Africa is for Africans, and sustainable growth can only be achieved through understanding and utilizing intra-African trade opportunities,” said Folami Olawale, Group Head/CEO of CDIM and Precut Collection.

Olawale also highlighted Liberia’s dollar-linked economy as a strategic advantage for Nigerian investors, noting that profits generated in Liberia could enhance Nigeria’s foreign direct investment inflows and stabilize the naira.

Assurances for Investors
Addressing concerns about safety, ease of doing business, and government support, the Liberian delegation reassured participants of a secure investment climate. They also announced plans to establish a “one-stop shop” to address investment needs efficiently.

This collaborative initiative underscores Liberia’s determination to attract Nigerian investors and foster stronger economic ties within the African continent.

The newly inaugurated Liberian President, Joseph Boakai, suffered heat stroke while making his inauguration speech on Monday.

Reuters quoted local media that the inauguration ended abruptly as Boakai was led off the podium.

The 79-year-old, who defeated George Weah in a runoff election in November, was sworn in during an outdoor ceremony in sweltering heat in the West African nation’s capital, Monrovia.

Meanwhile, his spokesman, Mohammed Ali said he has been stabilised saying the heat was high when he gave the speech.

Reports said Boakai paused during his speech and aides rushed to fan him. He continued a few minutes later but stopped again and aides helped him walk away from the podium, curtailing the ceremony.

“It is the heat. The heat was high. They should have had some fan or something around there,” Ali.

“At his age, the exhaustion happened. But it is okay now,” he said at the event.

Some of Boakai’s opponents had raised concerns about his age and energy during election campaigning but his team dismissed the criticism.

Although the inauguration ceremony ended abruptly, Boakai had already taken the oath of office when he was helped away. Officials still proceeded to a planned lunch but Boakai’s whereabouts were not immediately clear.
